PREPARATION PROCEDURE

STEP DIAGRAM
1. Measure the plate and divide it
to 10 pieces.

2. Cutting the plate using plasma

cutter and divide it to 5 group.
Each group will be given 2
plates.

3. Next, weld the 2 plate to butt

joint shape using Smaw.
4. After that, the plate will be
measured using L shape ruler
and will be cut again to smaller
pieces to share it with our
groupmate.

5. Grind the plate so that the

surface will be smooth.

6. Make sure the plate is straight,

if the plate unstable or
crooked, then we have to press
it first before go to the
hardness machine.
PROCEDURE ROCKWELL HARDNESS TEST
STEP DIAGRAM
1. Mark the point x,y,z on the specimen
and estimate the length of the point by
1mm only.

2. Clean the anvil surface and place the

specimen upon the anvil surface
Rockwell machine and make sure it is
flat and stable.

3. Adjust the penetrant until it is near to

the specimen.

4. Next, press the green button to start

the machine.

5. After that, observe the result on the

monitor beside the machine.

6. Record the result for point x, y and z

Base metal (Z) 52.23 HR5N
Table 1. Hardness Result
Interpretation Result

As we can see from the table 1, it shows that point x which is weld metal is the highest for this
test with 79.10 HR5N. Followed by, point y which is heat affected zone with 54.10 HR5N. The
last one is, point z which is base metal with 52.23 HR5N. As a result, we can see that the weld
point on the workpiece is stronger than the other parts. This happens because in the welding
process, it is done in the correct way. In addition, it is also due to the selection of the correct
temperature and electrode. As we know electrode selection is very important in the welding
process because it will affect the shape and quality of the weld. In the heat affected zone,
heating occurs which causes it to melt and harden again due to the high welding temperature.
Next, on the base metal part it is the lowest because it only receives a temperature that is not
too high which causes it not to melt.
