Dear Families:

I am writing to let you know about an incident that happened at our school today so that you can have accurate
information to discuss with your student tonight.

At about 2:45 p.m. today, a teacher in one of our classes noticed what he believed to be a handgun in a fanny pack
being worn by one of our students. The teacher immediately notified our administration, and the student was
immediately taken from the classroom and escorted to the office.

Upon further investigation, a handgun and magazine were discovered in the fanny pack. The gun had no bullets in
the chamber, but a magazine with ammunition was inserted into it. Additional ammunition was located in the
fanny pack.

Our School Resource Officer confiscated the weapon as we continued our investigation. That investigation
showed that several students saw the gun earlier in the day but did not report it to any staff member. We have no
evidence at this time that the student threatened anyone with the gun.

Please be assured that our school will take swift and appropriate action in accordance with the Code of Student
Conduct with regard to the student who had the gun.

I urge you to talk to your student this evening and emphasize that our school must be a safe place for learning.
Please reinforce with them the need to tell a responsible adult immediately if they are aware of any danger.

I want to applaud the quick actions of our teacher, who did exactly as outlined in our emergency protocols. The
teacher’s actions were prudent and helped prevent a potentially dangerous situation. Because of the teacher’s
efforts, other students were not involved and we did not have to implement other increased security measures.

I know this information may raise concerns for students and families. Please know that our school counselors as
well the AACPS Office of Student Services are always available to speak with students and staff about their
feelings and concerns they may have regarding the climate of our school. Any safety concern can also be reported
anonymously to the Safe Schools Maryland Tip Line at 833-MD-B-SAFE (833-632-7233). That line is available
24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Alrededor de las 2:45 p.m. de hoy, un maestro en una de nuestras clases notó lo que creía que era una pistola en
una riñonera que llevaba uno de nuestros estudiantes. El maestro notificó inmediatamente a nuestra
administración, y el estudiante fue sacado del aula y escoltado a la oficina.

Tras una investigación adicional, se descubrieron una pistola y un cargador en la riñonera. El arma no tenía
balas en la recámara, pero tenía insertado un cargador con municiones. Se encontraron municiones adicionales
en la riñonera.

Nuestro Oficial de Recursos Escolares confiscó el arma mientras continuábamos nuestra investigación. Esa
investigación mostró que varios estudiantes vieron el arma más temprano en el día, pero no lo informaron a
ningún miembro del personal. No tenemos evidencia en este momento de que el estudiante haya amenazado a
nadie con el arma.

Tenga la seguridad de que nuestra escuela tomará medidas rápidas y apropiadas de acuerdo con el Código de
Conducta Estudiantil con respecto al estudiante que tenía el arma.

Les insto a que hablen con su estudiante esta noche y enfaticen que nuestra escuela debe ser un lugar seguro

si saben de algún peligro.

Quiero aplaudir las acciones rápidas de nuestro maestro, que hizo exactamente lo que se describe en nuestros

potencialmente peligrosa. Debido a los esfuerzos del maestro, otros estudiantes no participaron y no tuvimos que
