Knowing Our Bibles (1)

H OW much do you know your Bible? How often do you study your Bible? These are questions that we
as Christians need to answer in a positive way. In this brief article I would like to present to you basic infor-
mation about the book we call, “The Bible.” As we examine this information, let me encourage you to please
memorize as much as you can.

The word “Bible” comes from the Greek word βιβλία, which is the plural form for books. This word has as
its meaning a document consisting of a scroll or a book. It also means a collection of books (e.g., all 66 books
of the entire Bible). This Book is divine because it comes from God (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21). It
took approximately 1,500 years for the entire Bible to be written. It also took about 40 human instruments to
write the entire Bible. These men were fishermen, kings, tax collectors, doctors, shepherds, etc. The Bible
possesses a perfect unity throughout all 66 books. The Old Testament contains 39 books, while the New Tes-
tament has 27 books. The books of the Old Testament may be divided in the following sections: Law, histo-
ry, poetry and major and minor prophets. Jesus divided the Old Testament books as follow: The Law of Mo-
ses, the prophets and the Psalms (Luke 24:44). The New Testament has been divided into the following sec-
tions: The Gospels (Matthew-John), History (Acts), The Pauline Letters (Romans-Philemon), The General
Epistles (James-Jude), and Prophecy (Revelation). Matthew through John: The life of Christ; Acts: How to
become a New Testament Christian; Romans through Jude: How to live as a Christian; Revelation: How to
die as a Christian—victory in Christ. The Old Testament contains 929 chapters, while the New Testament
contains 260. The entire Old Testament can be read in one year if you read 3 chapters a day. The New Testa-
ment can be read in one month if you read 8 or 9 chapters a day. The New Testament can be read completely
in 11 hours and 38 minutes. There are twelve key words to understanding the story of the Old Testament
Scriptures: Adam, Noah, Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, Judges, Kings, Divided, Captivity and Re-
turn. The Old Testament Scriptures were written in the Hebrew and Aramaic language, while the New Tes-
tament was written in Koine Greek. Passages of the Old Testament that were written in the Aramaic lan-
guage were: Ezra 4:8-6:18; 7:12-26; Daniel 2:4b-7:21 and Jeremiah 10:11. If possible, try to memorize this in-
formation as much as you can. You may also write this down in your Bible so you can have access to it any

Conociendo Nuestras Biblias (1)

¿ QUÉ tanto conoce usted su Biblia? ¿Qué tanto estudia su Biblia? Estas son preguntas que como Cristia-
nos debemos responder de una manera positiva. En este breve artículo deseo presentar información bási-
ca sobre el libro que llamamos, “La Biblia”. Mientras examinamos esta información, permítame animarle a
que procure memorizar esta información lo más que pueda.

La palabra “Biblia” viene de la palabra griega βιβλία que es la forma del plural para libros (2 Timoteo 4:13).
Esta palabra tiene como significado un documento que consiste de un rollo o un libro. También significa una
colección de libros (e.g., todos los 66 libros de la Biblia completa). Este libro es divino porque proviene de
Dios (2 Timoteo 3:16-17; 2 Pedro 1:20-21). Se tomó aproximadamente 1,500 años para escribir la Biblia. Tam-
bién se utilizaron 40 instrumentos humanos para escribir toda la Biblia. Estos hombres fueron pescadores,
reyes, recaudadores de impuestos, doctores, pastores, etc. La Biblia posee una perfecta unidad a través de
los 66 libros. El Antiguo Testamento contiene 39 libros, mientras que el Nuevo contiene 27. Los libros del
Antiguo Testamento han sido divididos de la siguiente manera: Ley, historia, poesía los profetas mayores y

cía (Apocalipsis). Mateo-Juan: La vida de Cristo; Hechos: Cómo llegar a ser Cristiano; Romanos-Judas: Có-
mo vivir como Cristiano; Apocalipsis: Cómo morir como Cristianos—Victoria en Cristo. El AT contiene 929
capítulos, mientras que el Nuevo Testamento contiene 260. Todo el Antiguo Testamento puede ser leído en
un año si lee 3 capítulos por día. El NT puede ser leído en un mes si lee 8 o 9 capítulos por día. El Nuevo
Testamento puede ser leído completamente en 11 horas y 39 minutos. Existen 12 palabras claves para enten-
der y recordar la historia del AT: Adán, Noé, Abraham, Jacob, José, Moisés, Josué, Jueces, Reyes, Dividido,
Cautividad y Retorno. El AT fue escrito en el lenguaje Hebreo y Arameo, mientras que el Nuevo Testamento
fue escrito en griego koiné. Pasajes del Antiguo Testamento que fueron escritos en Arameo son: Esdras 4:8-
6:18; 7:12-26; Daniel 2:4b-7:21; Jeremías 10:11. Si es posible, procure memorizar esta información lo más que
pueda. Usted también puede escribir esta información en su Biblia para que tenga acceso a ella en cualquier
