English 10- GROUP ACTIVITY

Direction: Working together with your fellow Sumerian sages, use the conventions
of the epics and the definitions of themes and elements to answer the following
questions.

1. Is The Epic of Gilgamesh about a larger-than-life, legendary, a royal hero


who does the impossible? Why or why not?
It is about a legendary hero named Gilgamesh but it is more than just the life of
Gilgamesh. The story is more about the faithful meeting of Gilgamesh, the king of
Uruk and the legendary wild man Enkidu and how they spent their days together
adventuring, until one day the Goddess Ishtar confessed her love for Gilgamesh but
was declined and by her rage Enkidu died and he went on a journey trying to find a
way to revive his friend and the secrets of Immortality.

2. Does the action in The Epic of Gilgamesh take place across kingdoms, lands,
seas, worlds, and time among others? Why or why not?
Yes, because there multiple times in the movie that a sort of boundary between
heaven and the kingdom was mentioned, meaning there were different places, or
rather different worlds.

3. Does The Epic of Gilgamesh have supernatural and/or otherworldly themes,


such as gods, demons, and magical creatures among others? Why or why
not?

The Epic of Gilgamesh have supernatural, gods/goddesses because it was


mentioned in the Epic because it is in their beliefs that it might happened have long
time ago in real life.

4. Does The Epic of Gilgamesh use formal, grand, or extravagant language?


Why or why not?
No, they do sometimes use extravagant and grand words but it is not used
constantly and It just uses basic English.

5. Is The Epic of Gilgamesh narrated by an objective and omniscient persona


who sees and knows everything? Why or why not?
Yes, the narrator sticks to just common narrating using phrases such as "he said"
and "he did". So we mostly just looking at it from the 'outside'.

6. Is Gilgamesh a god, a demigod, or a mortal protected by gods? Explain.


In the epic, Gilgamesh is a demigod of superhuman strength who befriends the
wild man Enkidu. Because he is a son of a goddess.

7. Does Gilgamesh perform superhuman acts of strength and valor or things


that ordinary human never could? Why or why not?

Yes, he is known as the Demigod of superhuman strength.

8. Is Gilgamesh a real epic hero? Why or why not?


Gilgamesh is the original Epic hero, with his connection to gods and superhuman
strength. He did show heroism when he defeated humbaba, but before all that he
acted like a tyrant.

9. Is The Epic of Gilgamesh a real epic? Why or why not?


The epic of Gilgamesh is a real epic because it has the supernatural/otherworldy
themes, we have a MC who is a demigod has superstrength and a friend like a half
human half beast. We can see in the epic of gilgamesh that the Hero always
succeed and ends up with a tragedy. Lastly we learn some informations or lesson
that can help ourselves.

11.How do the elements of The Epic of Gilgamesh contribute to its theme?


It’s main theme or the events in the epic always involved Supernatural activities or
beings such as the Goddess Ishtar, Enkidu, and Gilgamesh and an epic wouldn’t
really be an epic if its missing more than two elements of an Epic.
