    construct race.

    1. Where did the notion of “race” come from?

    2. How does the institution of slavery relate to the concept of race in an historical perspective?
    What were some of the ways in which slavery was justified? What is chattel slavery and where
    did it come from? Discuss these concepts both before and after the emergence of slavery in the
    Americas.

    3. The podcast discussed the invention of the three races of Man, and then the concept of five
    racial categories. How, when and why were these categories created? What was the significance
    of the creation of the terms “black” and “white”? What does the word caucasian mean?
    4. The film clip discussed the degree of genetic diversity present among students who grouped
    themselves together as belonging to the same race. The podcast also discussed genetic variation.
    What does this mean in regards to viewing the human race as Homo sapiens sapiens? Based on
    both the film clip and the podcast, are we one race or several?

    5. If humans look so different why/how are we the same species?

    6. Is race a biological fact or a social construct? Why?
