Chapter 1

Introduction

Background of the Study

Social media refers to the interactions among people in which they create, share,

and/or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks. The Office of

Communications and Marketing manages the main Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn

and YouTube accounts. Social media platforms allow users to have conversations, share

information and create web content. There are many forms of social media, including blogs,

micro-blogs, wikis, social networking sites, photo-sharing sites, instant messaging, video-

sharing sites, podcasts, widgets, virtual worlds, and more.

However, social media use can also negatively affect teens, distracting them,

disrupting them sleep, and exposing them to bullying, rumor spreading, unrealistic views of

other people’s lives and peer pressure (M Rithika, Sara Selveraj-2013). The risks might be

related to how much social media teens use. Reduced academic performance is one of the

most important consequences of social networking overuse for students. The results of a

study on medical students showed that students who used social networks and internet more

than average had a poor academic achievement and low level of concentration in the

classroom.
