CHAPTER 3: CELLULAR TRANSPORT MECHANISMS

MEMBRANE TRANSPORT, FACILITATED DIFFUSION, ACTIVE TRANSPORT, ENDOCYTOSIS, EXOCYTOSIS

Key Objectives:

 Describe the structural components of the cell membrane.

 Relate the structure and composition of the cell membrane to its function
 Explain transport mechanisms in cells (diffusion osmosis, facilitated transport, active transport)
 Differentiate exocytosis and endocytosis

Introduction
Cells are surrounded by a phospholipid bilayer known as the cell membrane which demarcates the internal and external
environment of the cell. The structure of the membrane is designed to be selectively permeable, which means that it
allows only certain substances to enter and leave the cell. In this chapter, you will investigate the different membrane
transports and how these mechanisms maintain the state of equilibrium of the cell.
