Self According to Filipino Culture

The Philippines has a very incomparable culture due to the influences of colonization and the
surrounding countries. Culture not only defines who we are, but also influences the ways we
interact with other nationalities. Culture is a determiner of your personality and how it is
displayed, such as if and how you value traits like being family-oriented, having strong faith in
God and generosity. From our culture, By becoming more culturally aware in our daily lives, we
can enjoy more meaningful interactions with others while strengthening our sense of self.

As a Filipino, I am embodying traits and values according to our Filipino culture. Self-esteem
occurs when a person internalizes cultural values (Becker et al.2014). It is really important to be
aware of the set of acceptable traits and values in a certain community for us to live peacefully
and harmoniously with others. Above all, Filipinos are one in spirit, thanking God for all
blessings they receive. The positive outlook in life, love for elders, being family-oriented, an
optimistic character and recognizing God in the center of our lives makes me a very proud
Filipino.
