Topic N° 1 Environment Analysis

Objective:
Summarize the advantages and disadvantages of different resources to be used in a learning
program and their roles.

Advantages and disadvantages of using different resources in a classroom

Resources can be defined as all that elements that help to develop de educational
process. In that sense, Kurdziolek (2011) conceptualized resources as more than just physical
things, but as systems of objects, relationships, actors, and environments. While the instruction
as interaction model (Cohen, Raudenbausch, & Ball, 2002) is useful for understanding how
learning is achieved through successful student-resource interactions, there are alternative
models of classroom systems that can help us understand the relationships between available
resources and their impacts on important factors such as student outcomes and resource
adoption. Some of the most common resources that we frequently find in a classroom are: the
room, the furniture, the board and of course modern and obsolete technology. At these point of
the essay we will analyze the advantages and disadvantages of each one of them.
In relation with the room, we can mention as some of its advantages that Collaborative
Learning is promoted: A good class environment increases collaborative learning between
peers and in that sense social skills are improved; inside class social interaction is developed
with other students and teacher. A third one, depends on student’s matters teaching style can
be modified. And finally because it keeps student stimulated: the activities made in class help
students to retain more from what they have learned during the class. In contrast, some
disadvantages are the inconvenient schedules, that students have problem to approach the
teacher with any doubt (shy students). And the travel problem: sometimes it is a problem to
travel where the class is being delivered.
As a second point we can mention the furniture advantages because when we choose
the correct furniture (ergonomics, comfort) will help the students in its development in class.
A correct distribution of the furniture in class will make the class more interactive and
participatory. Depending on the arrangement of the furniture (traditional, group pods,
roundtable), the student engagement can be maximized. However, some disadvantages are the

cost of the appropriate furniture because they tend to be a little expensive, and if we choose
some cheaper ones they would be made of defective material or low cost products, in that sense
that furniture can cause health problems.
Even when board seems to be an obsolete resource, it is one of the most useful tools in
a classroom because it allows to keep all the information in a central place, so the teacher can
provide clear instructions to students and it also stimulates student comprehension by
promoting student involvement in classroom. Nowadays we can even access to smartboards
that can give a 360 grades change to our teaching learning process. A negative aspect is that
the cost of smartboards is expensive, its maintenance is difficult and complicated and its repair
costs would be high.
Finally, it is necessary to speak about technological resources in classrooms, some of
them become obsolete due to technology fast development, however thanks to this technology,
different learning styles are incorporated, it also prepares children to face the world of the 21th
century and improves active participation in students, but one of the most important advantages
is that it helps save time and guarantees that external and internal communication get faster. In
the other hand, the lack of interesting in hard work and becomes one of the main disadvantages
because of how easy is to find information in the internet has made students lazy. It also can
be a distracting for students and it is easier for them to cheat. Teachers’ technological skills
play a big role here because a lack of training on the use of the technological devices.
Despite of the mentioned disadvantages, there is no doubt about the usefulness of using
different resources in classrooms because when we develop a positive classroom, our students
will feel a sense of trust and confident and this help them to encourage challenges, ask questions
and take risks. The correct arrangement of the furniture in class is more than an organizational
aspect, it has become an essential tool to get the engagement of the students in class. Finally,
technological elements or resources such as a smartboard in class will help the teacher to create
a more interactive class and the students will be engaged in the learning process.
