03. MACHINES.
[3 A ½ AND 3 B] [LEVERS CANCEL BY COUNCIL]
1.
a. What do you understand by a simple machine? State the principle
of an ideal machine. [2]
b. Differentiate between Ideal machine and Practical machine. [2]
c. Name the pulley which has no gain in mechanical advantage.
Explain, why is such a pulley then used? [2]
d. Give 2 reasons why the efficiency of a single movable pulley is not
100%. [2]
e. Define the term velocity ratio. State its unit. [2]
2.
a. Derive a relationship between mechanical advantage, velocity
ratio and efficiency of a machine. [3]
b. The diagram below alongside shows an
arrangement of three pulleys A, B and C.
The load is marked as L and the effort
as E. [3]
i. Name the pulleys A, B and C.
ii. Mark in the diagram the directions
of load (L), effort (E) and tension
T1 and T2 in the two strings.
iii. How are the magnitudes of L and
E related to the tension T1?
iv. Calculate the mechanical advantage and velocity ratio of
the arrangement.
v. What assumptions have you made in parts (c) and (d)?

c. A pulley system has a velocity ratio 3. [4]
i. Draw a diagram showing the point of application and
direction of load (L), effort (E) and tension (T).
ii. It lifts a load of 150 N by an effort of 60 N. Calculate its
mechanical advantage.
iii. Is the pulley system ideal? Give reasons.
