1.

Zn + CuSO4  ZnSO4 + Cu
Displacement reaction is an exothermic reaction. The following procedures were used to determine the
enthalpy change of reaction of Zn (s) and CuSO4 (aq).

Step 1. Place 50.0 cm3 of 0.250 mol dm-3 copper (II) sulphate solution in a polystyrene foam cup.
Step 2. Weigh out 2.0 g zinc powder (excess).
Step 3. Measure the temperature of the copper (II) sulphate solution every 30 seconds for 2.5 minutes
Step 4. At 3.0 minute, add the zinc to the solution and stir the mixture.
Step 5. Measure the temperature of the reaction mixture every 30 seconds for a further of 6.0 minutes.

Temperature rise: 11.9K

Mass of resultant reaction mixture = 52.0 g
Specific heat capacity of the reaction mixture = 4.2 J g-1K-1
(a) Calculate the standard enthalpy change of reaction of Zn and CuSO 4 in kJ mol-1
(b) Give some sources of error.

2. (p.154) Calculate the enthalpy change of combustion of ethanol.

Volume of water heated = 100.0 cm3
Mass of ethanol burned: 0.420 g
Temperature change = +24.5K
Specific heat capacity of water = 4.18 J g-1K-1
Density of water = 1.00 g cm-3
Give some sources of error.

3. (p.156) Calculate the enthalpy change of neutralization.

Volume of 1.00 mol dm-3 HCl = 25.0 cm3
Volume of 1.2 mol dm-3 NaOH = 25.0 cm3
Initial temperature of acid = 18.6 °C
Initial temperature of alkali = 18.8 °C
Maximum temperature reached = 25.4 °C

(Density of solution = 1.00 g cm-3, specific heat capacity of solution = 4.18 J g-1K-1)
