Background of Pre- Service

Teaching
2

Introduction

Pre-Service Teacher Education is the education and training provided to

student teacher before they have undertaken teaching.

Pre-Service Teaching is the culminating experience in all teacher

education programs. It is regarded as both the most challenging and most enjoyable

experience in the teacher preparation programs. It is believed that experience is the best

learning that provides the student teachers with the knowledge, understanding, skills,

strategies, methods, and techniques through the experiences they had in their In and Off

campus Teaching Demonstrations and Observations. In the Philippines, the pre-service

program serves as an alarm to awaken the Student Teacher’s mind and soul of being a

real teacher and the realities of being a teacher whether in public or in private schools.

This is the time where Student Teachers apply the knowledge learned and gained in their

previous years especially in making the Daily Lesson Plans as well as the application of

the Classroom Management in a real classroom setting.

Not all pre-service programs are designed the same and a certificate obtained in

one country may not be recognized within another. Graduates of the pre-service teaching

in the Philippines may need to take-up additional certifications, trainings, examinations

and qualifications to be eligible to teach in other countries.

Rationale of Pre- Service Teacher Training

The main objective of Pre- Service Teacher Program is to equip the Pre- Service Teacher

with the necessary learning that would enable them to do their multiple tasks and be

responsible and the teaching field.

3

General Objectives of Sacred Heart College Pre-Service Teaching Program

At the end of the two semesters, the Pre-Service Teachers should have;

1. Become familiar with the nature of the tasks of classroom teachers in and out of

the school setting.

2. Become acquainted with the current approaches, strategies, techniques and

procedures in teaching.

3. Applied the principles of classroom management and discipline, that art of

questioning and giving of assignments, preparation of teaching devices, test

construction, administration and evaluation and preparations of forms.

4. Established rapport with school administrator, teaching staff, support personnel

and learners in the laboratory/cooperating school where they will conduct Pre-

Service teaching works through display of proper demeanor and work ethics.

5. Realized that teaching is a multifaceted task which requires patience, dedication,

commitment and maturity and should have developed such professional

equipment gradually within them.

OBJECTIVES OF STUDENT TEACHING

1. Understand the totality of the school in its setting in the community through

first-hand exposure to the field of actual teaching.

2. To allow the pre-service teacher to identify, understand and apply the

educational principles, theories, approaches, methods and techniques learned

prior to the practicum.

3. To allow the pre-service teacher to continuously develop himself/herself

through observation and delivery of lessons to facilitate learning.

4. To help the pre-service teacher acquire the necessary values and attitudes

necessary in teaching.

5. To teach the pre-service teacher how to behave professionally and ethically

relationship with the people inside and outside the school setting.
4

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDENT TEACHING TRAINING

Generally, Pre-service Teaching training will significantly contribute to the:

 development and improvement of the Student Teachers;

 the learning they had during their formation years will be fully equipped;

 the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor skill of the Student Teacher’s inside the

classroom will be able to test and use;

 the Student Teachers will be open to the real side of becoming a truly dedicated

educator of the future students;

 this trains the capacities of the Student Teacher in dealing with their students; and

 develop the Student Teacher’s ability to deal with their responsibilities and

provide competent instruction and guidance to produce competent and skilled

future teachers.

Divided but with one goal

“To teach is to touch lives forever,” as an educator, a cordian educator, we must

touch the lives of our students and hone them holistically.

This day the pre-service teachers were divided into two teams so that it will not be

as hard as last year. One group is handled by Mrs. Malelang and the other one is with Dr.

Paleracio; and I am under the supervision of Dr. Paleracio since I am Social Science

major. We talked about ordering Field Study (FS) book and Dr. Paleracio gave samples

of lesson plan because she wants to see the teaching demonstration of the students under

her before having their demonstration at Integrated Basic Education Department (IBED)

except for Social Science Majors since she already saw our way of teaching. She also

shared and gave us some advice on how to be a good teacher.

The encounter was short because it was our first meeting. One thing I just

realized, though we are divided, we still have one goal in this profession and in our hearts

and that is to give life and hope to the class to enlighten their paths.

Conference No. 2

July 28, 2017

Challenge Accepted

“The mediocre teacher tells, the good teacher explains, the superior teacher

demonstrates, but the great teacher inspires,” William Arthur once said.

Today we had our 13th Pinning, Candle Lighting and Sending off Ceremony. It is

an emotional event for all of us after all the hardships we experienced inside and outside

the school. Actually, I am pressured and anxious for the challenge that we are given yet I

am excited and confident to face the real high school students to demonstrate our

teaching styles. The faculty members, third year education students, COTED officers,

parents and of course the dean who always supports the pre-service teachers since then.
8

In the afternoon, after the ceremony, we had our class and talked about the

materials that are needed by a teacher and a FS 5 student. As the discussion goes on, Dr.

Paleracio talked about how we should act if we are already in our respective classrooms.

Sir Renz and Sir Leo shared their experiences as pre-service teachers. They said that we

must have an impact to the class especially to the students that will be lost in the right

path. After the sharings, we talked about who will have their teaching demonstration for

the following meetings.

As the class ended, I think of what Sir Renz and Sir Leo talked about: impact –

one word but a big responsibility. With this in my mind, I want my students to be

inspired and be a good citizen. But I can’t teach them what I do not have so I should be a

role model to them as Sir Leo said, “Walk the Talk”.

Practice Makes Us Better

On this day, some of the pre-service teachers had their teaching demonstration as

a practice and to show Dr. Paleracio how they teach. The teachers teach their different

topics that are connected to their majors.

As I participated in the demonstration, I am foreseeing myself, “How will I teach

my students?” Can I make the discussion lively yet meaningful? What kind of teacher

will I become?” They had different activities that will catch the students’ attention but of

course, nobody is perfect and all of us need improvement to be an effective teacher. In

my observations, the ones that are missing in the demonstration are abilities to elicit

questions and to infuse values in the discussion from the beginning to the end.

As the class ended, I thought will it be possible for me to become a great teacher

who inspires her students? With these practices, sermons and advices, I know that these

will help us to be a good pre-service teacher and a great teacher in the future. I

congratulate those who already had their teaching demonstration.

Strive for More Learnings

We didn’t meet in our FS class today because the personnel had a seminar. About

this, as teachers, we must not stop learning and discovering new things because it helps

us grow and develop. We cannot teach what we do not have so must strive for more so

that we can fulfill our jobs as teachers and that is to teach our students holistically for a

brighter and better future. I believe that we, teachers are the molders of the youths.

Aim High

We didn’t meet in our FS class today because the Dr. Paleracio attended the

meeting for the preparation of re-accreditation of Philippine Accrediting Association of

Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU) to the College of Teacher Education as

Level 2. With these event, I realized that we must aim for higher heights and achieve our

goals. As future teachers, let us encourage our students to go for their goal and taste the

sweetness of success after the sacrifices they made.

Touch their lives not only their minds

We had the continuation of the teaching demonstration of the next batch of the

pre-service teachers. The teachers are MAPEH major, TLE major, Filipino major and two

general education majors.

I am amazed with the first two teachers because they were confident, energetic

and has a gift in teaching. They taught creatively with their own activities and visual aids
10

or instructional materials. Even though they have lapses, they manage to teach effectively

and the enjoyment of the teacher and the students is very evident. However, the other

teachers are not very confident maybe because they were nervous but still to teach in the

real field of education, you need a lot of confident, knowledge and skills for teaching so

that your students will love you and they will be interested in your subject.

Before the class ended, Dr. Paleracio gave food for thought for us as future

teachers. Teacher must have deeper source of emotion or the so-called “hugot” so that the

learners will not only be developed mentally but holistically. As I reflect on this, I asked

myself, “Am I deep?” I want to touch the lives of my students as much as possible and

this will only do when I am already in the field.

RAMADAN

We didn’t have class today because it is holiday and Muslims are celebrating

Ramadan today. With this declaration, I am happy not because we don’t have class but

because our government value what our brothers and sisters are believing at. In the

classroom, we, teachers must also accept and appreciate variety of culture that our

students are practicing. We must respect the diversity of our learners because we can also

learn from them.

Voice as Capital in Teaching

This day there were two pre-service teachers who demonstrated in our FS class.

First is May Ann Verzo and the second is Mary Joy Villanueva. As they demonstrated
11

their lesson, the class is very active and participative either an elementary schooler or a

high schooler.

Ms. Verzo taught counting numbers from 11 – 20. She has a very good visual

aids, pictures and activities but you will see that she is nervous and not confident in

teaching because his voice is not loud enough to be heard by the students at the back. She

also needs to improve on instructing students. On the other hand, Ms. Villanueva is a

good teacher because she is confident in teaching and has modulated voice. She knows

how to instruct the students and has a knowledge about her lesson.

With the demonstration and points that Dr. Paleracio had said during the

demonstration, I can say that teachers really need to have modulated and loud voice for

us to teach the students very wee as they listen to us. We must save our voices because

this is our capital in teaching like singers who entertain people. As a future teacher, I will

do my best to save my voice and teach well even though we cannot avoid sickness like

cough and colds.

Conference No. 9

September 15, 2017

Build Bridges in Teaching

Today we only have one teacher who had his teaching demonstration. Mr. Clarke

Robles is a BEED pre-service teacher and his topic is about “Nasyonalismo.”

Mr. Robles had shown a very good performance. He has nice grooming and a

modulated voice. What I like about his demonstration is the building bridges or

connecting the lesson into varied fields of education. I can say that we are taught well and

learned effectively with our subject in major. The topic was connected to history, politics,

and literature and even in music since we sang a song in the integration part. Over-all, he

had a successful and wonderful yet somehow lack of humor while teaching. He has self-

confidence in teaching.
12

Through this demonstration, I realized that interrelating or interconnecting

different disciplines in teaching is really relevant and fruitful in teaching especially when

teaching Araling Panlipunan because their connotation about that subject is boring,

besides they can also learn different topics in other discipline. It is also important that we

connect our lesson into the real life situations and have some humor in teaching so that

you’ll be loved by those students. Our learners have multiple intelligences so with our

hope, we can survive in this kind of home.

Conference No. 10

September 22, 2017

Meeting of Admins

We didn’t meet today for our FS class because Dr. Paleracio have meeting. I realized that

being an adminitrartors really takes your time and passion in teaching, nevertheless, one

is chosen to be an administrator because she/he has the potential to lead and to be

responsible for all the works given to her/him.

Conference No. 11

September 29, 2017

Alpha and Omega

On this day, a Mathematics pre-service teacher conducted a demonstration in our

FS class. Ms. Mercurio discussed aboug polynomials -- an equation that has more

expressions or variables. She taught us the operations in polynomials.

Ms. Mae Mercurio has the mastery of the subject matter because even though one

student is asking in the middle of discussion, she can handle it and answer it immediately.

She has a very good start but as the teaching process goes on, her voice and energy are

going low. In the integration and generalization part, Ms. Mae somehow make it faster
13

and in that part, we should not just pass it by because we are targetting our students'

hearts and lives so Dr. Paleracio asked her to deepen her valuing about the topic.

As I participate in the discussion and as I observed the demonstration, I realized

that how we start our lesson, we must do that and be like that until the end that's why I

entitled this as Alpha and Omega - Beginning and End. We should not lose our enegy,

enthusiasm, voice and passion in teaching because this is our mission and vocation in life.

We already accepted this fate and what we must do is to do our best as we mold and

transform the youth of the next generation.

World Teacher's Day

We didn't meet today because Dr. Paleracio is not feeling and also Sacred Heart

College celebrates World Teacher's Day. I really appreciate today's celebration because

teachers really are so precious for they mold the learners' minds and hearts. I can't wait to

be a teacher already in the future.

Intramurals 2017

We don't have FS class today because of HED Intramurals. It is a comeback since

last year, we don't have that activity. It is good that students are engage also into extra-

curricular activities such as sports so that we can be developed holistically and healthy.

Pinning of Psychology

We didn't meet today because Dr. Paleracio attended the pinning of Psychology as

their dean. Nevertheless, Dr. Paleracio told us in the afternoon that it is her duty to

support them as well and I agree to that because they are also hadled by her and for them

not to be jealous to Education students. Pinning is somehow the start of out journey of

practicing our professionalism.

Conference No. 15

October 27, 2017

Seminar of PAFTE

We don't have FS class today because Dr. Paleracio went to Cebu City to attend a

seminar sponsored by PAFTE. As teacher, we should not stop learning because the world

is changing and as well as the students. Seminars help us to know more that will help us

grow and be an inspiring teacher and a good citizen of the world.

Conference No. 16

Seasons change

We don't have FS class today because of typhoon Salome. The school announced

yesterday that there will be suspension of classes today but it is somewhat wrong timing

because the weather became okay. This suggests that everything is not the same. The

weather changes so do we, people, so we must accept the changes that we are

encountering because there is a reason behind that.

Starting point of the New Journey

Teachers are vital element of a school and as we train ourselves to be a diligent

teacher we must accept the reality that we are going to teach at public school.

This day, we had the groupings for the Practice Teaching subject. We have three

formators: Dr. Paleracio, Dr. Calzado and Mrs. Malelang. Since I am a Social Science

major, I am under Dr. Paleracio.

After giving the names of our formator, Dr. Paleracio talked about some tips and

advice about our off-campus training. She said that we must be cautious, attentive and

sensitive with the people that we are going to meet in Gulang - Gulang because students

in the public school are different from the private school. She also advised us to have

teaching rules in the classroom to have an organized class as we teach them.

As I am listening to the advices of her, I am telling to myself, "Gosh, Ady. This is

it! This is your final stage. You can do it." We are all challenged on how are we going to

adjust to new types of students, new types of class, new environment and new

cooperating teachers. We need to think lots of activities and strategies in teaching.

Nevertheless, I hope that we are all excited to face the new road of our profession life.

Conference No. 2

On Becoming the 21st Century Teacher

Since our endorsement is not yet happening, we first discuss the contents of the

episodes that we are going to passed during prelim examination.

The first three episodes are about personal qualities, philosophy and school

environment respectively. With the personal qualities of the teachers, there are labels and

I think these qualities must be possessed by teachers because we are the ones who are

molding the youths as the next generation of the world. The second episode is all about
17

philosophy of the teachers when it comes to education. Our philosophy reflects on the

strategies and techniques we use in teaching. These philosophies help us to guide and

nurture our students in our different aim and goal. Lastly, the school environment, as

teachers, we have the responsibility to create a conducive learning environment for

students. In this episode, we are describing the environment that we are going to stay for

us off-campus training.

As we discuss the episode, one thing that I've learned answer only what is being

asked. Be direct, brief yet meaningful and will have impact to the readers or to the person

is asking you a question. I believe that this FS book will help us, pre-service teachers to

grow and develop our skills and prepare us to our future profession. Even though, there

are so many things to do, this is very helpful to be guided as a 21st Century Teacher.

Conference No. 3

January 9 & 11, 2018

Experience is the best Teacher

Patience is really a virtue because our endorsement at Gulang - Gulang National

High School is delayed due to unknown reasons and it is announced that our off campus

will start already. Dr. Paleracio also reminded us about the things that we must do and

avoid to do in the school.

Two days after the endorsement, we met in out PT subject on January 11. Half of

us, pre-service teachers who are under Dr. Paleracio, shared about the experience that we

encountered at Gulang-Gulang on our first days of off campus. Some shared that they

have enjoyed their class, some talked about their time with their cooperating teachers,

some shared the behavior of their students and some talked about how they discipline

their class.

Because I didn't have the time to share, I want to share that even though we are on

the new environment, I am imbibing the essence of being a teacher. Honestly, I am a little

bit and somehow shy to my cooperating teacher, Ms. Annjobel Pada, maybe because my
18

partner is Sir Derick, her former student. Nevertheless, time helps me to get closer to

Ma'am since she is kind and approachable. Most of the students at Gulang-Gulang are

very approachable. One thing that strikes me the most while having the sharing is the

advice of Dr. Paleracio to us, "Maintain a shoulder-level relationship with your CT and

students.”

Everything has its season

I didn't attend this week's PT/FS class because I went to Lucban for the Regional

Higher Education Press Conference. I didn't make it to Top 5 but I won and one thing

God had told me that He has plans for me and I am proud as the EIC of the publication

because we brought back the awards for individual contests despite of the hiatus in the

preparation.

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, " plans to prosper you

and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." - Jeremiah 29:11

Be cautious in all your ways

This week we made School Register. We practiced writing names, age, parents

and attendance of the students in case we become an adviser in the future. Nowadays,

teachers use soft copy school register but Dr. Paleracio told us that we should learn to do

it too for our own learnings and experience.

Even though, it looked so easy to do, it is hard because it is prohibited to commit

mistake, use correction tape and the like. We are all cautious in writing because we didn't
19

want to repeat what we've started. From my interview with Ms. Pada, they really repeat

the register if they commit mistake even the small ones.

With the happy experience and careful writing of the school register, I just

thought that in teaching we also should be cautious and careful because we are affecting

the lives of our next generations. We can change our mistake but it is not the same, there

are still cracks that can be seen and will never be erased even the sign of times. We must

affect the lives of our students in the positive way so that they can be encouraged and

become optimistic of the things around them.

Conference No. 6

January 30 & February 1, 2018

It's Better to be Prepared

Because it was our prelim last January 30, we only meet on February 1. What we

did was the announcement of the seminar, pre-board and review at the CBRC or Carl

Balita Review Center.

It is a requirement in the educational system of the Philippines that Filipino

teachers should have their professional license and that would be possible if one already

passed the licensure examination done by the PRC.

We are excited yet anxious because of course, it's different when license is the

subject. It is the real battle in becoming a professional teacher. Nevertheless, we are very

grateful that CBRC is willing to get students from Sacred Heart College to have our

review in their center.

This announcement is connected to our next worksheet in our FS book: the

NCBTS, the community and becoming a professional teacher. We also discussed how we

are going to answer our FS book. There is an activity where we will submit a narrative

essay of a professional teacher depending on the years he/she spend in teaching, we will

also conduct a survey to the community on how they view the teachers and how they
20

participate in the school activities and we will also have an interview with the teachers in

their respective years of teaching experience.

With this activity that we had, I had realized and reflected that it is better to be

prepared so that we know what will happen and what will be the contents of the subjects

in the LET. I hope that not only in this, I will be prepared but in other things that will

happen in my life because I believe that God is preparing something.

Conference No. 7

February 6 & 8, 2018

Giving Grades is Not a Joke

Since last February 8, we are on our immersion at Brgy. Wakas, we only met on

February 6. We continue discussing the activities in our FS book. The highlight of the

discussion is honesty because there is an exercise where we are going to answer multiple

choice questions while there is a key to correction at the back of the book. Doc Paleracio

told us to be honest and try to answer on our own.

With the remaining time, we were asked to make a class record where we are

going to guess grades as an example written in the yellow paper. I am so lucky because I

only have 24 students in my school register so I will only guess grades for them.

We are all laughing because we are having a hard time to think or guess grades

for the students. What I learned in this encounter is that it is really hard to give grades if

you don't have record or basis for grading such us their written works and the like. I

wonder how other teachers did it, maybe they are looking only in their names. When I

become a teacher, I will always be true to the grades of my students especially that I am a

Social Science teacher. I will have my class record so that if there are questions, I have a

proof of what I have computed. But I don't want to be selfish in giving grades. From what

I had experienced this day, I told myself that I will never do this kind of grading.
21

Immersed in the Community

We just had our sharing about the experiences we had during our immersion last

February 8- 11 at Brgy. Wakas.

With the sharing’s I heard, we had different experiences, some are happy with

their poster parents while some are unfamiliar with their culture like washing dishes and

clothes in the river or taking a bath in the different sources of water like irrigation.

Based on my observation during the sharing, it is important for us future teachers

to be immersed in the community to know their state of living because the students we

are molding are from it. I am very thankful that I went to Sacred Heart College because I

experienced such event though I already had that lifestyle. One thing that I realized, “It is

difficult to be poor but it depends on you if you will do something to make your life

successful."

On the other hand, on February 15, we had students' day at Sacred Heart College.

It aims to unite cordians and enjoy their lives as a student. We had different activities and

we supported our contestants on those activities. College of Teacher Education got the

title for Ms. Cordian.

These activities that we had helped me to grow emotionally because on becoming

a future teacher we must imbibe what is the lives of others for us to understand them.

#EDUCAKO

We didn't have a meeting this week because first, Dr. Paleracio was on leave due

to sickness and of course, we had an activity which is Education days that aims to bound

together education students especially that we are only two batches left because of K-12.
22

What I had learned during the 2-day celebration is that we as teachers have to spread the

love and mold our students holistically for a brighter future so that we can build a nation

with great effect and youths that are hope of the nation.

Being a teacher is not easy but it is a profession that affects the lives of other

people.

It’s Final Demo!

We didn't have a meeting on this week because all of us had our final

demonstration at Gulang-Gulang National High School. Dr. Paleracio said that we can

rest and prepare for the final demonstration because it is the true battle during the Off-

Campus Practice Teaching.

During the final demonstration, what I have realized is that students really do their

best to support and help you. If you are good to them, they will give back what you put

into their hearts. I will share more about mg final demonstration in my narrative report. I

am just glad and I enjoyed having my final demonstration at Grade 10 - Serenity.

Starting Line of My Next Lap

This week we were endorsed at the Integrated Basic Education Department

(IBED) and joyfully we were accepted as their pre-service teachers. The Social Science

major were divided into 4 because there were only 4 teachers teaching Araling

Panlipunan. I am assigned to Grade 9 wherein my cooperating teacher was Ma'am Abel

together with Angelica Joy Rodelas. We met her on Tuesday because she got sick and

that became the first step of my next lap.

Productive and meaningful are the adjectives I want to use to describe my whole

week of observation. As I observe the classes that Ma'am Abel is handling, I've seen

different behaviors of learners and the diversities of each culture. In Grade 9-Chastity, the

students are very active and participative in their discussion while in Justice, students are

naughty that makes the teacher to be mad but I believe that there is a reason for their

behavior. On the other hand, Grade 9-Courage and Forbearance, learners are very

passive. However, I believe that diverse classroom are unique and it is more interesting

and challenging to be handled. In addition, I am impressed to the Grade 10 students

because they already know the issues happening in the Philippines as well as in the

world.

As we choose the class that we will be handling, I got Grade 9 - Courage and

Justice and Grade 10 - Adoration. With the sections that I have, I know that I will be

shocked since this is the first time that I will encounter real high schoolers. As I swam
26

into the deeper thoughts of teaching, I wanted to be a great teacher who touches the lives

of her students.

With all the observations that I had, I realized that you can learn from your

students and that you should acknowledge the learners' works and you should think of

many activities as you can. This new lap is a new life and challenge for me as a future

teacher.

What if?

This week we had our second week of observation. As I observe classes, everyday

is different, sometimes, they are active, there were times that they are so noisy and

sometimes they are not in the mood to study.

Mrs. Abel gave a quiz to her classes, all grade 9 sections that she is handling and

she shared that they got low scores so what she did is gave them remedial for them to

pass. She is concern because it will reflect on her, it is a feedback that something is

missing in the teaching - learning process. As I think about this, I said to myself, "What if

this kind of situation happen to me? How will I improve my teaching - learning strategies

and techniques?" Nevertheless, I still learned that a teacher must think variety of

techniques, approaches and strategies that will help her students to learn holistically. I

believe that students will learn based on how they should and will learn considering their

strengths and weaknesses.

What if different struggles happened to me and for sure, there will be, but one

thing will I do -- teach the child not the subject.

A Week to Remember

Now I know the feeling of our teachers while teaching us during my high school

days. This week, I started my practice teaching in the class that I am assigned to teach: 9 -

Justice and Courage. It is natural to be nervous at first, I guess but as I start my

discussion, it is so much fun.

The students listen to you, they participate in the discussion and they get involve

in the activities you've prepared. Both of us were adjusting in the situation because I am

new to them and they are new to me but as time goes by, we are keeping in touch

especially in the teaching - learning process. As I teach them, they show different

behaviors. Some bullied their classmates, some are saying things that are nonsense, and

some throw jokes on you. With these, I understand that they want the class to be fun but I

reminded them to be sensitive to each and every one because we are all people who have

hearts and insecurities. Mg lesson to them is "Pinagkukunang-yaman" and they enjoy the

activities that I've prepared.

What I had realized while teaching my students is that it depends on their mood if

they want to listen to you and it also depends on their teacher on how I will get their

attention and encourage them to participate in the activities. As a teacher, I should be

creative and energetic as well as confident and has a command so that the class will be

more engaging.

Discipline is a Must

This week is the second week of my encounter with my students in Grade 9.

Classroom management is what my report will focus on. A teacher really need to be firm

and fierce when it comes to discipline with the students.

28

My students this week became wild and noisy. I let them have their quiz bee for

additional points. They are really noisy and I am struggling because I am only one and

most of them talking. Nevertheless, when I show them my firmness, I gave them a rule

that whichever group will be noisy will have deducting on their points. After that

commotion, they were already quiet. The students only need to see the firmness of the

teacher so that they will know my authority as a teacher. On the other hand, I had a good

start of my new lesson in Grade 9 - Justice because they are participative and they enjoy

the activities that I gave.

What I had realized with my demonstration this week is that discipline is

important and that as teacher you must taught them to do that. At the end of the week, I

had an affirmation and I am flattered because my cooperating teacher told me that I got

the interest of my students. I hope that I can be a good teacher to them while having my

practice teaching at IBED. What a great week it is! Full of lessons and realizations.

Why do we assess?

Assessment is done to track the learning progress of our students. It is said that it

will be tragic and a waste of time if the teacher just proceeds to the next lesson assuming

that the learners already understood the previous lesson.

This is what I had observed, the two forms of assessment: assessment for learning

and assessment of learning. First, I had observed the performance task of Grade 9-

Chastity in their TLE subject which is napkin folding. The teacher, Mr. Malabana,

demonstrated first the steps in folding different napkin styles, then before he proceed to

the next napkin fold, the teacher is monitoring if they are following. Second, assessment

of learning, Ma'am Abel asked us to make Table of Specification (TOS) and test paper

for Grade 9 students since we are teaching the lessons for first quarter. In TOS, there are

different levels which are knowledge, analysis, comprehension and application. In all
29

levels, there should be questions allot so that the teacher could be assess what her

students learn in all the lessons discussed in the first quarter.

With the observations I had this week, I had realized that it is important to do

assessment not only at the end of each quarter, but all the assessments so that we can

monitor their learning progress. Teachers should also encourage their students to assess

their selves. We will not lose anything if we assess our learners but will gain from it to

improve our teaching - learning process.

21st Century Learners

Contemporary issues in the Araling Panlipunan curriculum is new for everyone

because it is only in this year that schools have this competency to comply in the K-12

curriculum. This subject is for Grade 10 students and I had observed how 21st century

learners react to different contemporary issues. Learners of today are totally different

because they are more creative, innovative, informative and active in positive and

negative way.

This week I observed Grade 10 Reverence and Endurance of Ms. Patricia Paraiso

and their lesson is about the sustainable goals of the world. As I am listening to their

discussion, I can say that the students have their own opinion and ideas about the topic.

They are also creative with their presentations because in their role playing, they have

their own concept and props to act the certain issue given to them. They are also active in

a way that they are answering and participating in the discussion but they are also noisy

because they will make fun of their classmate to make the class more fun.

From the observation that I had, I think it is good to teach contemporary issues

because teachers can relate since it is based on their everyday life. Nevertheless, teachers

must be more aware and informed about the latest issues so he or she can teach more to

her or his students for them to become responsible citizen of the Philippines.

Acknowledgment is Encouragement

After a month, I finally came back to teaching because of so many activities

happening between me and my students that are connected to the school's events. I taught

this week the first topic for 2nd grading which is "Produksyon" but we had our

Intramurals so I only taught 9 - Courage.

We had an encounter since I've prepared lots of activities for them. Unfortunately,

mg motivation for them is not that good because it is a dance and my students are not that

interested. Hence, I urged them to participate in the discussion so that they will not be

bored and learn. What I did is that I call all of them whenever I have something to ask

about the lesson or I will ask one of them to read what is on the PowerPoint presentation.

After I called their names, they will again raise their hands to answer or read as if they

gain confidence or motivation.

Based on mg comeback, what I had realized is that if we once acknowledge our

students, they might feel that they should not be afraid to answer or speak in the class.

Once they had gained there confidence, they will participate and that is what fulfills me

this week because I know that I helped them to speak in front of their classmates.

D-day: This is it!

Unfortunately, I had cough and colds since weekend and on October 19, I had my

final demonstration. On that day, I am really anxious because except that I am not feeling

well, this is the time that I will meet 9 - Justice after one month due to the activities that

they had to comply. However, I guess it went well.

31

During the encounter, they were well-behaved and active plus they were really

discipline and participative unlike the previous encounters that I had with them.

Whenever I connect the lesson to the real life situations, I am grateful that they can relate

and I hope that they are learning from that. Another observation while having my

demonstration in them is that they were surprised that I know their names and I really

find a way to do that. They are really active and their attention were on me while

discussing. But there is one thing that I am nervous and that is to elicit questions from

them. Thankfully, there is one student who ask a question about an example. Overall, my

final demonstration with the Grade 9 - Justice is great.

What I had realized is that you will always be a teacher even though you feel sick

sometimes because it is your passion to teach the students. You will do your best and

assess yourself so that you can give your students what are best for them too. Teachers

must relate the lessons to real life situations so that they might not forget you. As it is

said, "Touch not only the minds of the young people but their hearts, most."

This is a great experience, though in my practice teaching journey. I will do my best to

improve my teaching skills so that I can be a great teacher someday.

Let them perform!

After my final demonstration, Ma'am Abel asked us to teach on November

because they are having their practice for the celebration of the United Nations. So what I

did is observe the final demonstration of my friends who are science majors.

In science subject, most of the time they had experiments and other activities that

the students will discover and explain the concepts and theories in Science. During my

observations, some of the students are into the experiment but some are just watching.

What I like about the science teachers is that they have activities that will help the

students to be encouraged in doing the experiment. Though the teacher is the one
32

explaining the concepts, the students gave their own insights and ideas about the topic.

As a whole, their final demonstrations are successful thanks to God for our journey in

IBED.

What I had realized is that we must encourage our students to share their own

ideas about the topic and if there is something to clarify, it is the time that we will expand

their learnings. Since this is the 21st century, our classroom must be student-centered and

ask them questions that will provoke their thinking skills.

The Long Wait is over

"Patience is a virtue", a quotation that's cliche but it challenges us with our

endorsement for the off-campus teaching. After the different encounters with the Gulang-

gulang administrators, we were finally endorsed last January 10.

We were gathered at Suarez building for our orientation before we proceed to our

assigned classroom and cooperating teacher. It was good that we are welcome at Gulang-

gulang National High School. The staffs and other personnel are kind, approachable and

respecrful.

However, to be honest, the school's building and environment are crowded

because of the new building that is being established but it is a great thing because there

will be new spaces for the students to have their classes.

During the deliberation of our assigned classes or grades we decided to choose

our grade level that will be handled. The AP coordinator approved it since AP teachers

are only 4, and since SS majors are 8, we were two in one CT. My cooperating teacher is

Ms. Annjobel Pada, AP teachef for Grade 10 students and my partner is Mr. Derick

Balbarosa.

I am very pleased because the students are very approachable and they're saying, "Ma'am,

good morning," "Hello, ma'am." When we observing, Ma'am Pads gave summative test
34

because January 11-12 is their examination days. In one section, Ma'am Pada got mad

because of cheating. One student got high score yet his records are not that high. I just

realized that I want that too, to be just and fair, to not tolerate chearing in our class. On

the day of examination, we became proctord of Grade 10 - Courtesy, Ma'am Pada's

advisory class. I can see students chatting with their seatmates but I am warning their

behavior. What I like about Ma'am here is she really called the parents of the students

who are not yet coming. She is very hands on when it comes to attendance.

With my observations, I can say that I am challenge with ghe behavior of Grade

10 students because they are so many but they have their own intelligences. Attendance is

really an issue so I will always check it. How can I discipline and catch their attention

and interest are other concerns in my ojt but I believe in God.

Interest is the Core

This week I only observe our classes on January 15 because I went to Lucban to

compete in the Regional Higher Education Press Conference. What we did was do the

item analysis about the test scores. The number of student who are present is so few

especially in the afternoon. Most of the students got higher got higher scores compared to

last quarters result according to my CT and they really had high scores in Araling

Panlipunan.

I had the chance to talk to my STE class since I am the one who facilitate their

item analysis. After we analyzed their scores, I ask them to introduce theirselves since

they are only 23 students. I want them to discover new learnings so that everytime that

it's AP time, they will be excited to gain the different issues in the society.

With the RHEPC, since that's the reason why I am excused for three days, what I

reflected is that "Everything has its own sesson and reason". I won 8th place but I did not

make it to Top 5 to compete for LHEPC on Baguio but I am proud as their EIC since all
35

of us got awards in their respective categories even though we didn't have any trainings

due to busy days. It is like in teaching, some things happen because God wants us to

realize something and learn from it.

This is it!

I had my first teaching demonstration in the public school this week. My classes

are two during Monday and Tuesday but during Wednesday I have three classes and only

one during Thursdays. The grade level that I am handling is Grade 10. Unlike during my

high school days, we had four sessions of Araling Panlipunan.

With my experiences this week, I enjoyed teachinng. The students are very

approachable, they have lots and different ideas and opinions. I will share the different

experiences that I had in the three sections that I handled. First, Stewardship, it is STE

class and they really fit thag section because they have unique and advance learning

compared to other sections. One of my activities is poster making and with their outputs,

I am very pleased because it is so beautiful with full of meanings. They were just 23 so it

is not difficult for me to discipline them. Second, Simplicity, it is a heterogeneous

section. They are also smart but only few are participating in the class so one meeting, I

had this strategy on how I can encourage them to participate as suggested by my

cooperating teacher. I told them that they will get additional points if they participate in

the discussion and it is effective. Lastly, Serenity, this section is also a heterogeneous

class and for me, they are the least discipline class compared to my other classes.

Though they are like that, they are all smart even the boys who are so naughty. When I

taught them on Thursday, they were really wild, I think I will have to look for more

strategies to discipline them.

With my experiences, I realized that I really love teaching because I am enjoying

it. The only thing that I need to consider is their behavior. Another thing is the
36

submission of their assignments, they are maybe lazy, distracted and didn't have

discipline in their lives. As a future teacher, I think these are the things that I need to

consider in the classroom managment and behavior of the students.

Expose Them to Performance Tasks

Since Araling Panlipunan is for only three days to be taught in the public schools,

I had discussed "Karapatang Pantao" and "Mga Organisasyong Nangangalaga Nito."

It is really great to expose the students to performance tasks and let them discover

the topic and teach them to value cooperation and leadership. Nowadays, we neet to use

the student-centered approach so that they will be engaged in varied activities.

What I had experienced this week is that they are really good in performing and

thinking of presentations assigned to them, though some of the students are so hard to

stop from doing other activities and some are not participating. Nevertheless, when I

asked then to watch a documentation about karapatang pantao, they are behave and they

listen well especially the boys who are naughty.

With the Serenity, I really had a hard time with themin managing their actions and

behaviors. One time, I got mad at them. I told them some words of wisdom about their

behavior. After that, they behave well. But after that moment, the other day, they tokd me

that they are sorry especially the girls.

I am really touched that they were apologizing and they know that they did

wrong. With such big size of class, I am really having a hard time and I think I have to

train myself and think of more strategies and techniques to manage my class properly.

Disappointment Hurts!

Grade 10 is somewhat the fourth year during my high school days and back then,

we are like young teenagers who are exposed to outdoor activities. Nowadays, it is very

different, most learners are visual learners and consume much of their time using gadgets

even in class.

This week, I am very disappointed to my two sections: Simplicity and Serenity. I

know that they are not like STE but I don't want them to discriminate themselves and

think that they can't do something. Our topic this week is about "Karapatan ng mga bata."

Yes, they are very active and participative but when I asked them to make a video

presentation about their assigned rights during performance tasks; they didn't submit it on

time and their reason was they didn't know how to edit so for consideration I gave them

another day to finish their works but only two groups passed their outputs.

What hurts that time is that I prepared their certificates, prizes and the like

because the other sections hadled by Derick already submitted. It is heartbreaking

because I trusted them and I am excited with their output. So with that incident, I had a

preaching because I am really disappointed with them. But what I observed while I am

preaching is that they felt sorry and that they are really listening at me. After that

moment, because I am not in the mood to teach the new lesson, I just gave them a short

quiz.

With these experiences and heartbreaks, I realized that these things hurt thw

feelings of a teacher the most. When they didn't give effort and time in your subject

especially that it is AP. I know that I have a big responsibility to hold on and that it is to

make the learners especially Filipino learners to be nationalistic and one way of showing

that value is to love and give time and effort in Araling Panlipunan.

Millennials are Creative

Grade 10 students had their culminating activity in MAPEH and due to this, my

only class is at Grade 10- Simplicity because Stewardship is the co-organizerd of the

event.

As usual, students of Grade 10 are very active and participative, especially when I

am giving additional points for those who will participate in the discussion. Even though,

I only meet Stewardship once this week, they didn't let me down. We only watched the

video presentation they made about the rights of the child. They really are very creative,

their concepts, themes, cinematography and everything even though some of them are not

used in editing the videos yet they comply and that's what I appreciate about them.

With Grade 10 - Simpicity, they're not in the mood to study because they have

their culminating activity in the afternkon of February 21. Even though I understand them

because they are excited, I told them to listen first and they did.

What I had realized is that there are still students who make effort in your subject.

Millenials are distracted due to their gadgets, peers and environment. Nevertheless, they

are sweet and thoughful especially in public schools.

D-Day: Road to Graduation

This highlight of this week is my final demonstration at Grade 10-Serenity. I am

anxious about what will happen because I only meet this class once a week since I started

my off-campus teaching here because their AP schedule is during Wednesday-Friday and

last February we have lots of activities at Sacred Heart College.

Before we start, they are cheering and comforting me. They said that they will not

let me down and I am satisfied with their abilities and performance during the teaching-

learning process. During the teaching demonstration, they are really behave unlike the

ordinary class. With the motivation, they didn't know the song but I put my energy so that
39

they will sing also the song. As they perform, there are activities to be done because I

used student-centered approach and every group got their own class. I just realized that

the best motivation for students is additional points or giving them incentives like bonus

points and they are really participative. Some of my students are using their phones while

thr other groups are performing and I managed to call their attention and those who are

talking to each other. I am really glad because they are active and participative.

After my final demonstration, Serenity became more behave than usual and about

their assignment, I know that they learned because what I told them with the values

integration. As I am talking to them, they are always telling me what they learned

especially the values that were engraved in their hearts.

What I had realized and reflected on my final demonstration is that students are

considerare and cooperative. They changed as long as they felt that they are loved by you

and that they are important to you. It is also satisfying that they learned not only

academically but holistically. I observed these, too, from the other sections that I hadled.

"A teacher is an extraordinary person in whose hands lie the future of the world. "

A statement that truly describe the teacher as the molder of the youths. As it is said, "To

teach is to touch lives forever," cliche yet always trur. I hope that I can be an

extraordinary person, too, especially to my students.

Grading System

We only had two days at the school which is Gulang-Gulang National High

School. This week we only make grades and give students remedial to comply in their

tasks that they don't have.

I will just share my experiences in grading and realization about it. It is an

unordinary, heartbreaking and a headache when doing their grades because some students

who are unfamiliar and who doesn't have records in you and yet suddenly they will ask
40

for remedial. Since DepEd said that no students shall fail in the subject so teachers are

becoming a doctor, doing everything to make the scores higher for then to pass the

subject.

What I realized about this is that it is so unfair to those students who are studious

and doing their best just to pass the subject and that the mentality of the students

nowadays, is that they will pass even eothout giving much effort and time. I hope that if I

am going to teach in public school, I will help the students to give effort and prove to me

that they are worth to pass.

Chapter IV
Facts about
Laboratory School
(Sacred Heart College)
41

History
Sacred Heart College, the oldest Catholic institution for men and women in

Quezon Province, was founded on April 27, 1884. The school had its roots in the vision

of a simple and saintly woman named Hermana Fausta Labrador who, at the age of 26,

opened a Charity school to form the youth according to the ideals of the Catholic faith.

Hermana Fausta's zeal to sow the seeds of Christian values was based on the deep

love for the less privileged. This has led her to devote her lifetime to service of humanity,

particularly the deprived in the community. By the power of the instruction and example,

the lessons of love have been continually lived in the various projects and activities of

Hermana Fausta reflecting sympathy understanding, and openness to others.

The mission of Hermana Uta, as she was fondly called, obtained its first shapes

through Don Gregorio Merchan, a wealthy citizen of Lucena, who offered his house to

serve as the first school building on April 27, 1884. Having been trained and molded by

the Daughters of Charity at the Colegio de Santa Rosa, Hermana Uta later decided to

leave her school in the hands of the Daughters of Charity in the twilight handed over to

the Sisters on August 14, 1937.

In 1939, the school was operating the complete primary, intermediate and high

school courses. Running the school was not an easy task. But the Daughters of Charity,

steeped in the spirit of their founder, St. Vincent de Paul, and perpetuating the mission of

the Foundress, remained undaunted and steadfast. True to spirit of their founders, they
42

worked and prayed hard to mold the youth into becoming fully integrated individuals.

Realizing the need for the good teachers founded on solid Christian ideals, the

sisters deemed it necessary to open a teacher-training course. So in 1941, the school

offered the Junior Normal Courses (E.T.C.). With the opening of the new course, the

status of the school was changed from Academy to College. The outbreak of the war in

December 1941 forced the temporary closure of the school. The school reopened in July

1942 during the Japanese occupation.

On September 14, 1942, at the age of 84, the saintly Foundress of Sacred Heart

College passed away. But her spirit continues to live to this day in the hearts of the

people she had impressed with her mission. It seemed that not even the conflagration that

swept the first school building on June 11, 1944 could kill the spirit of utter selflessness.

From the house of Don Gregorio Merchan to the residence of Don Agaton Rodriguez to

the house of Atty. Fabian Millar to the Club X building to the present school site the

spirit of the Foundress continues to permeate the corridors, the hall, the grounds and the

chapel.

With the construction of the present school building, the former site of the

school razed down by the big fire that hit Lucena in 1965 was transformed into a

landmark. The Hermana Fausta Development Center stands as a living tribute to the

foundresss, a gift of love for the poor as it has become the center of the school's

community outreach projects for the depressed sectors of the community.

Through the years, the school continues to upgrade itself, aimed towards

providing only the best in quality education and the ultimate in spiritual formation and

community service.

In 1982, the Basic Education Department took that bold step towards academic

excellence by undergoing and passing the rigid requirements for accreditation of the

Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU). To

maintain its accredited status, the department continues to upgrade the quality of its

service delivery.

In 1993, the Higher Education Department likewise made its own bid for
43

PAASCU accreditation, passing the Preliminary Survey and the Formal Survey in

February 1998. Sacred Heart College HED is PAASCU Accredited School.

In the area of physical development, the school in the last two decades has

constructed and/or developed other landmarks such as the school gymnasium 1984, the

Sto. Nino Building and the St. Vincent Hall in 1993, the John Paul II Youth Formation

House along with the Twin Hearts Ecology Park in 1994, a three story building for the

Basic Education Department in 1997 and the SHC Cultural Center and Gymnasium in

1999.

To meet the needs and challenges of the times, the school has opened new

courses and majors in the Higher Education Departments such as AB Communications,

AB Psychology, BS Computer Science, and Computer Secretarial. On top of these

significant developments is the opening of a graduate program in Master of Arts in

Education.

This persistent struggle of the school at achieve excellence and to produce quality

graduates has established Sacred Heart College as a reputable institution of learning in

the province and in the entire Southern Tagalog region.

Thousands of students have entered and left the portals of the school but the

mission of Hermana Fausta lives on. To this day, Sacred Heart College continues to live

Statement of the Philosophy of D.C Schools

The final destiny of man and woman is the possession of the Ultimate Good,

Truth and Beauty. This is God. Christian Education is the means to bring man and

woman to his/her destiny likewise to his/her temporal happiness.

As a Christian Catholic school, SACRED HEART COLLEGE takes Christ as the

center towards which all academic and non-academic practices flow and converge. The

school is committed to the integral formation of its students and personnel. The building

of a Christian Community, through RE and BEC, fosters this process.

As a Vincentian and DC school, SACRED HEART COLLEGE upholds the

culture propagated by the DC founders – ST. VINCENT DE PAUL and ST. LOUISE DE

MARILLAC. MANAGED BY THE DC’s, the school seeks the students and personnel

assimilation of the Vision-Mission and the Core Values derived from the virtues of

charity, humility and simplicity, through Community Extension Services, students and

personnel are exposed to socio-cultural realities, particularly the less privileged sector in

society.

As a Filipino, its program of studies based on the Philippine Constitution and

approved by the DECS, is geared towards nationalism, nation building and social

transformation. In the process the school becomes an agent of change.

48

Through the years, the DC have established partnership with the laity in the task

of evangelization. Believing that the parents possess the primary right and duty to educate

their children. The DC’s commit themselves to assist parents as partners in this work.

administration, faculty, and non-teaching personnel, an ongoing formation (OGF)-based

on justice, charity, and the integration of life and faith – is a priority in the development

of its human resources. An outcome of this is an ambiance of love and respect for self

and others and a strong tendency of love and respect for self and others and a strong

tendency of an individual and collective goal towards the common good.

Therefore, SACRED HEART COLLEGE aims to produce boys and girls of

character, imbued with the spirit of St. Vincent De Paul, the Church, and Christ. The

Facts about
Cooperating School
(Gulang-Gulang National

High School)

A. History

By making education accessible to all the people of Barangay Gulang – Gulang,

Mayor Ramon Y.Talaga,Jr., Brgy. Captain Anselmo A.Regis, Jr. and the Former Schools

Division Superintendent Dr. Yolita S. Amiscosa and Dr. Azucena and Dr. Azucena P.

Romulo with the former Officer in charge of the Assistant Schools Division

Superintendent Felix F. Avillo have joined forces to establish a secondary school within

the barangay.
60

This also aimed to eradicate problems on vehicular traffic, overcrowded

classrooms, and high expense on transportation. For the realization of the project,

barangay officials of Barangay Gulang-Gulang namely; Brgy. Capt. Anselmo A. Regis,

Jr. with his councilors Bernardita D. Pura, Ana M. Yap , Felipe R. Regio, Norma Z.

Pumida, Allan D. Gamboa, Jose Carmelo P. Merano, Justiniano R. Nierva, Jr., K

Chairlady Ma. Cristina Angelina A. Luna, Secretary Narfil Abrencillo, and Treasurer and

Treasurer Emmanuel G. Glinoga had made a resolution No. 2005-03.s. 2005 entitled

“Isang Kapasyahang Humihiling sa Sangguniang Panglunsod ng Lucena sa Pamahalaang

Panglungsod sa Pagtatayo ng Isang Paaralang Sekundarya sa Barangay.

The ground breaking of the new school site which situated at Zaballero

Subdivision, Purok Malayong Pinag-isa Barangay Gulang-Gulang, Lucena City was

immediately held on August 24, 2005 with the presence of the members of the

Sangguniang Panglunglungsod, Sangguniang Pambarangay, DepEd Officials, PTCA

officers, parents, teachers and students. After a few months of construction on March 8,

2006, the inauguration of the two story-eight classroom building funded by the city

government was held.

On January 28, 2005, the said resolution has been passed and approved by Mayor

Ramon Y. Talaga, Jr. with Vice Mayor Ramon Y. Talaga, Jr. with Vice Mayor Roderick

A. Alcala and Councilors Clarinda S. Cabana, Danilo R. Zaballero, Simon N. Aldovino,

Sr., Wilfredo F. Asilo, Godofredo V. Faller, Jose C. Asensi, Jr., Michael C. Dalida,

Nicanor G. Pedro, Jr., Rey Oliver S. Alejandrino, Salome S. Dato, and Aurora C.

Upon its approval, the school started its enrolment at the Barangay Hall of

Gulang-Gulang on May 23-27, 2005. Classes formally opened on June 6, 2005 with only

147 enrolled students: 88 male and 59 female which were divided into three sections

namely; I-Germanium, I-Uranium and I-Scandium.

The proposed Gulang-Gulang National High School was primarily under the

umbrella of Lucena City National High school - Cotta Extension, with Mrs. Epifania F.
61

Carandang, Principal however with the immediate supervision of Mr. Pablito R. Alay,

Head Teacher 1/Teacher in Charge. Thus the five teachers who were first assigned to

teach at GGNHS came from LCNHS. They were Agatha Brenica D. Ilagan, TLE, Irene

P. Avillo, English, Helen M. Abanto, Science and Rommel E. Lavarro, Mathematics. Mr

Rolito M. Inojosa was the first assigned Head Teacher 1 of GGNHS. He pioneered in the

acquisition of the necessary documents to establish the school.

Because the prospective school site for GGNHS was still under negotiation, the

school was temporarily but wholeheartedly accommodated within the three classrooms of

Zaballero Subdivision Elementary School under the administration of Mrs. Evelyn

Villabroza, principal. So as to expedite the immediate acquisition of the school site, Engr.

Edilberto E. Caday, the Barangay Urban Poor Coordinator helped in negotiating and

purchasing of the lot. And with the barangay officials’ eagerness and strong desire to

speed up the establishment of GGNHS, they decided to pay one half of Php 1.6 million

(lot price) using the barangay funds.

The school’s second year of operation (S.Y. 2006-2007), unprecedented increase

in enrolment urged the new administration to open two more year levels: four sections in

First Year and three sections in Second Year. This also led the administration to add six

new but experienced teachers. They are as follows: Anicia J. Villaruel- Head Teacher 1

designated new Teacher-In-Charge of the school; Ofelia A. Guevarra-Guidance

Counselor and Filipino; Carolina L. Antenor- MAPEH, Arlene Z. Abdula- Science; Junet

Andrea B. Migullas- Social Studies; and Jolivette A. Galutan- TLE.

There were also eleven additional classrroms added wherein the seven of which

were funded by DepEd-Principal Led School Building while the four – classroom

building was donated by Metrobank foundation through the partnership of Filipino-

Chinese Chamber of Commerce Candelaria and Lucena Chapter and also through the

efforts of Mayor Ramon Y. Talaga, Jr. former City Councilor Romano Franco C. Talaga

and former Barangay Captain of Brgy. 1 Americo Lacerna.

62

Fortunately, the school’s third year of operation (S.Y. 2007-2008) with its 80% in

enrolment necessitated the school to add ten more teachers. Two of them are the only

master teachers from Lucena City National High School Main campus namely: Jennifer

E. Lopez-English and Ma. Leticia Grace P. Zaporteza-Mathematics; three were Local

School Board Funded teachers namely: Adoracion P. Remo-Science; Maricar J.

Espinosa-Filipino; and Geraldine D. Queano-English; seven were still on contractual

local school board funded teachers namely: Nazel R. Zoleta-MAPEH; Cecilia O.

Amador- Filipino and English; Raquel P. Fernandez-Social Studies; Michelle B. Bajar-

TLE; Dennis E. Ibarrola-Mathematics; Lowell B. Busa-TLE and Maricel C. Oblea- TLE

and Social Studies.

The school’s tie up with Non-government stakeholders like Ayala Foundation

Inc.-GILAS Project and Syrex Corporation who served as benefactors for the complete

establishment of Information Communication Technology (ICT) Laboratory marked the

technological advancement in school.

On August 2, 2007, Gulang-Gulang National High School finally

received the approval of its establishment as an INDEPENDENT SCHOOL signed by

Dr. George R. Garma, Director IV (A) CALABARZON.
