Skill Related Fitness and Active Living Recreational Activitie
Dear Students;

Welcome to the new H.O.P.E. 4!

So far, we have learned about active living and exercises through dance. In this module
we focus on the importance of recreational activities in one’s health and life. Doing recreational
activities promotes a balanced lifestyle amidst the stress brought forth by growing up, working,
studying and the challenges of the pandemic
We Hope that we continue studying and growing through dance, exercise, appreciate
and encourage others to engage in active indoor and outdoor recreation.

Recreation's purpose is not to kill time, but to make life, not

to keep a person occupied, but to keep them refreshed; no to
offer an escape from life, but to provide a discovery of life.

B. Expectations
Leisure and Recreation are important to keep oneself healthy. Engaging in physical activities
must be part of one’s lifestyle
At the end of the Module, I can:
1. provide baseline data for selection of physical activities for enhancement of health and skill
performance
2. motivate, guide and select games/sports for recreation, competition and lifetime participation
3. maintain a physical activity and recreation log for the semester
4. develop an outdoor activity plan and an indoor recreational plan and competition.

C. Skill Related Components

Fitness is a condition in which an individual has sufficient energy to avoid fatigue and enjoy
life. Physical fitness is divided into four health and six skill-related components. Skill- or
performance-related fitness involves skills that will enhance one’s performance in athletic or
sports events and or recreation.

Agility is the ability to change and control the direction and position of the body while
maintaining a constant, rapid motion. For example, changing directions to hit a tennis ball.
Balance is the ability to control or stabilize the body when a person is standing still or
moving. For example, in-line skating.
Coordination is the ability to use the senses together with body parts during
movement. For example, dribbling a basketball. Using hands and eyes together is called hand-
eye coordination.
Speed is the ability to move your body or parts of your body swiftly. Many sports rely on
speed to gain advantage over your opponents. For example, a basketball player making a fast
break to perform a layup, a tennis player moving forward to get to a drop.
Power is the ability to move the body parts swiftly while applying the maximum force of
the muscles. Power is a combination of both speed and muscular strength. For example,
fullbacks in football muscling their way through other players and speeding to advance the ball
and volleyball players getting up to the net and lifting their bodies high into the air.
Reaction Time is the ability to reach or respond quickly to what you hear, see, or feel.
For example, an athlete quickly coming off the blocks early in a swimming or track relay, or
stealing a base in baseball.

D. Basic Concept, Characteristics and Importance of Recreation

Aside from the pandemic, multiple factors have played roles in creating the today’s sedentary
lifestyle, contemporary obesity epidemic, stress and depression. Lifestyle change is one of the
key factors. There have been dramatic increases in multimedia use (i.e. computer, TV, Internet,
cellular phone, tablets), motor vehicle use for transportation, and substantial decreases in the
number of physical or active transportation and other similar daily activities performed in the
workplace, school or at your own home. Active living exercise also called lifestyle – related
activities consist of activities and exercises that raise your heart rate as if you were exercising.
Lifting heavy bags, walking and commuting, doing household chores and other similar
activities.

With so many physical activity guidelines existing that give recommendation on how much and
how to accomplish, it is best to limit sedentary behavior and promote active living exercises.

Declaration of Human Rights: “Everyone has the right to rest and leisure, including reasonable
limitation of working hours and periodic holidays with pay”, same is true and applied in school.
academic schedules need leisure and rest from school work.

I. Active Living Physical Activity and Life Skill Activities
Reasons for engaging in recreation activity vary from person to person. Reasons may
include such as attaining a fitness level, personal satisfaction, personal pursuit, environmental
education and enjoyment. What makes you happy may not be true to others, therefore choice of
recreation depends on your own interest and needs. But what about other activities done on a
daily basis such as walking, lifting and or carry objects during chores, study or work? These
activities are known as active living exercise or active living physical activity.
One key to achieving the
recommended physical activity level is
through active transportation whether in rural
or urban places. Active transportation or
known as non-motorized transportation has
been promoted to address physical inactivity
specially during the different quarantine
periods. If you spend 10 -15 minutes between
stops of walking or cycling to get to school,
mall, work, house and other stops before the
pandemic happen then you have fulfilled your
daily requirement of physical activity. In
addition to improving your general health
status active transportation reduces carbon
dioxide emission, thus contributing to the
health of the environment.

Living in a highly urbanized city or a rural area has its pros and cons but cities and local
government units usually provide its citizens of public recreational facility for use. A lot of local
government unit is also redesigning and designing their parks and roads to promote walking
and cycling taking account the safety of the pedestrians. Rural areas with natural venues and
landscape for recreation is developed not only for its citizens but for tourism purpose is a win-
win for both locals and tourists. Aquatics – swimming and other water sports, mountaineering
and orienteering, martial arts or self – defense and community recreation, these are the life
skill activities that prevent sedentary lifestyle or boredom and offer a productive use of time.

Our local physical environment and neighborhood status plays an important role in our
lifestyle. Improving our physical environment and neighborhood is not just the job of our
elected officials it is everybody’s concern in their little or big ways. The environment may
either encourage or discourage physical activities for its current citizens including its future
citizens. Nature provides as with many benefits and material needs even helps in
psychological, emotional and spiritual needs. Therefore, participants to life skill activities must
learn to respect nature and do its part as a good steward of nature and the environment.

J. External factors of Recreation and Physical Activities

 Social – when yours friends or family are engage in physical activity and recreation, there
are greater chances that you will also participate in same event or activity. If your friends
and family are sedentary, then probably you will be less motivated to be active. Further
your family and friends provide you with social support that can encourage you or
discourage you to participate in physical activity and recreation.

Philippine Star

Copyright image: Taine Morgan / www.image-central.co.nz

 Environmental – your surrounding can dictate how you participate in physical activity and
recreation. Do you walk or take a bicycle to and from school for at least 10 minutes during
your previous grade or how close is your school to your house? If within walking distance
from your house, chances are that you will be walking than taking public transport. The
absences or presence of a park or open space for outdoor activities and community centers
also play a big factor.

20
Health Optimizing Physical Education 4

These two factors go together; one factor may influence the other, for example your parent
or guardian will not allow you to participate in the outdoor activity if they feel that the
environment is unsafe, unfit due to pollution or due to COVID -19 and its new strain. You
and your friend’s neighborhood are located far away from each other, chances are you
might not be motivated to participate since you will devote more time for travel than the
activity. What is important is when participate in other means of participation.
