5 The first question is what

ratios? are sine, cosine, tangent,
cosecant, secant, and
cotangent.
Very well said.
Next, solve the right
triangle named ABC using
one of the trigonometric
ratios. Given some of its
measure. If c=10cm and
angle A is 35°. What is the
measure of side a?

a= sin 35 ° (7 cm)
a= 4.02 cm
Excellent class! In this
problem, what particular
trigonometric ratio did you
used? We used sine ratio to solve
the problem.
Why sine ratio?
Because sir, the given is an
angle in A, and the
hypotenuse, and a missing
measure is the opposite.
Very good.
So, so far what are the
given? The given are: a=4.02 cm,
c=10cm, <A=35°and <C=90°.

Now, you may find the

measures of b and angle B.
To find side b:
opposite (a)
tanϴ=
adjacent (b)

4.02 cm
b=

b= 5.74 cm

To find angle B:
<A+<B+<C=180°
35°+<B+90°=180°
<B+125°-125°=180°-125°
<B=55°

In this, what trigonometric

ratio did you use in finding

And, you will be graded by
this rubric (see attached

10 minutes to do the task.

standing in front of a

Okay. How about in solving
the problem, group 1, what
formula did you used to
get the height of the
flagpole? We used tangent ratio to
answer the problem.
Why tangent ratio?
Because given in the problems
are the measure of an acute
angle and one of the triangle’s
leg which either the adjacent
or opposite leg.
What do you call the side
where the flagpole
represents? Opposite side, sir.

What did you do to the

height of the observer on We add the height of the

object solved.

Very good. Group 2, what

formula did you use to We used cosine ratio to find

the top of the tree.

Nice. So, what do you call

the side that represents
the distance of the bird
from the tree? Adjacent side, sir.

Very well said.

Group 3, what formula did
you used to find the angle
of elevation from the car? Sine ratio, sir.

How did you solve the

angle? We substitute the given height
of the building which is the
opposite side and also the
diagonal distance of the car to
the top of the building. Then,
we find the angle.
Excellent! The formula
used in your activity is the:
B

a c

C b A

opposite
sinϴ=
hypotenuse
adjacent
cosϴ=
hypotenuse
opposite
tanϴ=
adjacent
hypotenuse
secϴ=
adjacent

Where the symbol 𝚹

represents the angle, a
represents the opposite
side, and b represents the
adjacent side and c is the
hypotenuse.

In finding the height of an

object given the observer’s
height, adding its height to
the objects is necessary.
Why is it so? It must be added because, the
measure of an object do not
start at the line of sight of the
observer, but to the
base/ground.
Very good. In group 1, the
solution is:

Angle of elevation= 48°

Observer’s height= 5.5 ft. opposite (a)
tanϴ=
adjacent (b)

a
tan 48 °=
15 ft .

a= 16.66 ft.
16.66+ 5.5 ft. =
22.16 feet

Therefore, the height of the

flagpole is 22.16 feet.
In group 1, can we
use other trigonometric
ratio to solve the height of

the flagpole?

the solution. cotangentϴ =

Very good. So what
did you observe to the
answer? It is the same as using the
tangent ratio because it is its
reciprocal.
In group 3, the
distance of the car to the
building is not given.
Please answer using the
correct trigonometric ratio. opposite (a)

b= 31.61 m
Excellent!
5 Application A while ago I gave you a
mins. picture right? So, do you
think class, is it possible to
determine the correct
distance of the boat to the
island?
Yes sir.
Please solve April Lyn.

opposite (a)

44 ft .
tan50 °=

You got the distance of Distance= 36.92 feet
36.92 feet and that is
correct.
So, what did you learn
from the problem?
I learned that Angles of
elevation can be used in real
life and solve problems like
Nice one. Ganda’s.

Now let’s have a

short recap about our topic
for today.

What is the
trigonometric ratio we
used to determine the
opposite side, adjacent
side and angle of
elevation? Any of the trigonometric
ratios, sir.
Very good. If the
height of the observer is
given what will you do to
determine the height of
the object observed? Used the tangent ratio to find
the height of the object and
add the height of the observer
to the result.
What if the angle
of elevation is to be
determined, do we need to No sir, because we can also
use only tangent ratio? use others depending on the
problem.
Good. Again, what is angle
of elevation? Angle of elevation is the angle
from horizontal to the line of
sight of the observer to the
object above.
Where can we
apply the concept of
trigonometric ratios
involving angle of In sailing sir. Also we can apply
elevation? that in finding the height of
tall objects.

Nice one! It shows that you

learned a lot in this lesson.
VI. EVALUATION
Answer the following in 1 whole sheet of paper.
A. 1.What is angle of elevation?
B.

In items 1 & 2, refer to the figure above. Use the correct trigonometric ratio:
1. What is the measure of angle of elevation?
2. Determine the measure of the diagonal distance from the top of the building to the girl (hypotenuse).

VII. ASSIGNMENT
1. Look for a partner. Then look for the activity on your book (Learner’s module 9) page 465. Do
the procedures given and answer the questions below.
2. Study Worded Problems Involving Right Triangles.
