Communication Skills
EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILL is the ability to understand the meaning of the world's sound as well as the emotion intended by
the speaker. This is enhanced by the subtleties of facial expression and body language.

A. Choosing Appropriate Means of Communication- speaker should choose the appropriate channel for the message

B. Clear message- for the side of the speaker, s/he must be able to match the vocal tone, body language and expression with the
content of the message, to avoid confusion for the side of the listener.

C. Receiving the message- the listener must be willing to listen and focus on the speaker’s message. Avoid interruptions such as
using cell phones, talking with seatmates, looking in different directions, etc.

Hearing Vs. Listening

• Hearing - A natural ability to receive sound waves
• Listening -Understanding what you heard.

Types of listening
1. Appreciative listening- Listening for enjoyment
2. Emphatic listening - Listening to show mutual concern
3. Comprehensive listening - Listening to comprehend the message
4. Critical listening- Listening to evaluate

D. Avoiding barriers- both listener and speaker should know the diversity of people. The speaker must really know everything to
his or her audience such as culture, level of comprehension, interests etc. The listener must familiarize the jargon or the
