Guide Card

Hi! I’m “Malgebra, the Magician”.

In this material, you are going to go over the
different properties of real numbers (ℜ). You
will deal at some properties that apply to all
real numbers. If you learn these properties,
they will help you solve problems in algebra.

As you go on the different activities, you will

appreciate the powers of magic. So be with
“Malgebra, the Magician” and experience
the fun and magic of Mathematics!

TO REMEMBER THE PROPERTIES OF REAL NUMBERS EASILY
PROPERTY MEANING
A -SSOCIATIVE PROPERTY - you can add or multiply regardless of how
the numbers are grouped.
C -OMMUTATIVE PROPERTY- states that order does not matter
I -DENTITY PROPERTY-(addition) any number added to 0 is the number itself
(multiplication)any number multiplied by 1 is the number itself
D -ISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY-multiply a sum by multiplying each addend
separately then add the products
I -NVERSE PROPERTY-(addition) any number added to its opposite is equal to
0
(multiplication)any number multiplied by its reciprocal equal is
equal to 1
C -LOSURE PROPERTY-the result of the operation is always an element in the
set.

EXAMPLES:
Associative Property : a. (2 + 3) + 4 = 2 + (3 + 4) b. 5 x (4 x 2)= (5 x 4) x 2
Commutative Property: a. 6 + 3 = 3 + 6 b. 7 x 2 = 2 x 7
Identity Property a. 2 + 0 = 2 b. 5 x 1 = 5
Distributive Property a. 2 ( 5 + 3) = 10 + 6 b. 3 ( 4 + 2) = 12 + 4
Inverse Property a. 8 + (-8) = 0 b. 5 x 1/5 = 1
Closure Property a. 2 + 5 = 7 b. 9 + 3 = 12
