Assignment (Task) No. 1

A. What teaching strategies and forms of assessment could you use to help
develop functional literacy?
Answer:
As an educator, your primary goal in teaching-learning process is on
how to help your students capture your lesson and apply it in their daily
lives. And with that, you’re determined to look for a strategy that would help
you achieved your goals. Now, the question is, how to develop functional
literacy? In order for you to help your learners develop their functional
literacy, you may implement 'making connections' strategies through visual
aids like posters, 'think-aloud-strategies' which require students to voice their
thoughts out loud, and journaling.
Moreover, visualizing is another literacy strategy that requires
students to make mental images in their minds. This technique is also known
as 'imagery'. As a text is read, students are asked to picture what the author is
describing. The use of metaphors, similes, and allusions may be discussed, as
well as descriptive language. All five senses may be activated when reading a
text that is full of imagery. Identifying imagery in the text should transfer to
writing skills as well.
Furthermore, questioning is an essential literacy strategy that enables
students to self-monitor their textual understanding. If a reader simply
decodes the words without asking what the text is saying and clarifying its
meaning, comprehension will be lost. Typically, questioning will occur
before, during, and after reading as described below. Teachers should model
questioning skills.
And last, is inferring. Inferring is a literacy strategy that requires
students to 'read between the lines' and conclude what the author is trying to
convey through clues. Although this is a higher-level thinking skill, young
students can learn to infer through modelling and questioning techniques by
the teacher
B. Prepare a lesson plan that incorporates some of the new literacies.

B. Presentation
Our topic for this day is all about statistics.
Statistics is the study of the collection,
organization, analysis, and interpretation
of data. It deals with all aspects of this,
including the planning of data. It deals
with all aspects of this including the
planning of data collection in terms of the
design of surveys and experiments.

Raw data, also known as source data, is

data that has not been processed in order
to be displayed in any sort of presentable
form.
Discussion
What are examples of activity which you Varied answers (National statistics
think Statistics is involved? office, accounting etc.)
Very good
Census of population, registration of
election voters.
Other examples would be:
 46% of people polled trust the
present government, while 14%
doubt the government capacity and
the rest abstained.
 A school’s drop-out rate has
decreased by 2%.
 88% of people questioned feel that it
is better to exercise at least twice a
week.
 8 out of 10 students are above
average in academic performance

Did you heard these statements?

These are the basic examples of
statistics we see every day.

Some problems or questions that

can be answered using Statistics.
 What fraction of Filipinos is living
below poverty line?
 What is the school’s graduation
rate?
 A couple has 4 boys, and they are
pregnant again: what is their chance
of having another boy?

Uses of Statistics
A. Statistics helps in providing a better
understanding and exact
description of phenomenon of
nature.
B. Statistics helps in proper and
efficient planning of a statistical
inquiry in any field of study.
C. Statistics helps in collecting an
appropriate quantitative data.
D. Statistics helps in presenting
complex data in a suitable tabular
and graphic form for an easy and
clear comprehension of data.
E. Statistics helps in drawing valid
inferences, along with a measure of
their reliability about the population
parameters from the sample data.
Statistics are used in the fields of business,
math, economics, accounting, banking,
government, astronomy, and the natural
and social sciences.
Business- businesses use statistics to find
customer preferences, check the quality of
products, market products, estimate costs
and make decisions.
Math- statistics help make mathematical
theories more accurate.
Economics- economics use statistics to find
the relationship between imports and
exports, the inflation rate, the per capital
income, and the national income rate.
Accounting- accountants use statistics to
see how well a company is doing, discover
trends and create projections for the next
year.
Banking- bankers use statistics to estimate
the number of people depositing money
versus the number requesting loans.
Government- the government uses
statistics federally and locally to make
budgets, set the minimum wage and
discover the cost of living.
Astronomy- astronomers use statistics to
estimate the distance between objects in
space and the timing of interstellar events.
Natural and social sciences- use statistics
to form theories on what they’re studying,
whether it’s estimating large populations,
predicting the weather or studying the
human brain. Some uses Statistics.

Yes, because... (varied answers)

Is the statistics importance to us? Why?

C. Application
Activity 1: Find a partner and list down at
least five (5) statements which you think
statistics is involved.
Example:
8 out of 10 Filipinos worry about
extrajudicial killings—SWS survey

IV. EVALUATION
Get ¼ sheet of paper and answer the following.
Direction: Determine whether the given questions are statistical or non-statistical.
1. How many cars were sold each month this year?
2. How many days are in December?
3. How many goals did the basketball teams score?
4. How many hours per day do student in the grade 6 class spend games?
5. What is your favourite color?

V. ASSIGNMENT
Make a survey in your community or in school to find out how far students travel to
come to school. Make the best estimate using kilometres. Ask at least 40 students and
present your data using PowerPoint presentation.
