1. What is the product being advertised?

The product advertised is a body lotion. A lotion is a topical preparation, applied to the
skin with bare hands or cotton wool, with the intent to moisturize and/or treat the skin. Most
body lotions are meant to simply keep the skin soft, smooth and healthy, but they can also have
anti-ageing properties and contain fragrances.

2. What does the advertisement say about the product.

The advertisement shows that before you use the product, your skin is coarse and dry,
and after you used the product, your skin will be smooth. It shows three women standing in
front of an illustration which has a label “before” and “after”.

3. What (other) message does the image communicate? Explain briefly.

The advertisement's secondary subliminal message is that lighter skin is preferable to a

dark complexion. In the before and after images, a brown woman represents dry skin, while a
white woman represents smooth skin. The picture may also give the reader the false notion that
lighter skin is more attractive than black skin since black skin is unhealthy and dry.
