Cantilever Load Secondly, this report will examine the portion of the cantilever of the
“A3.502” shape that is 1" thick. This area is 1.500" wide. Take mo-
ments about point “B.”
∑MB = (wl2/2) x 1 " sect + (200 psi) x 3"/2 x (1.500 inch) x 1" sect
= (1" ) x (200 psi) x (1.500 in)2/2 + 450.0 pound-inch
= 225.0 + 450.0 = 675.0 pound-inch
S = bh2/6 = (1" section width) x (1.000 in)2/6 = 0.1667 inch3
Ó = M/S = (675.0 pd - in)/0.1667 inch3 = 4,050.0 psi
The allowable bending stress for 50 ksi steel = 27,000 psi
The Factor of Safety = 27,000/4,050.0 = 6.667

TECHNICAL REPORT
Adequacy of Stud To check the adequacy of the stud anchor, moments must be taken
Anchor about Point C. The entire 2" wide top surface of the “A3.500” shape is
loaded by the truck tire. The vertical leg of the edge retainer is
assumed to be rigid. The top of the stud is kept 2" below the surface
of the concrete deck. The studs are spaced at 41/2" centers, so the
length of the section examined will be 41/2".
ÓMC = wl2/2 x 41/2" + 200 psi x 3"/2 x 41/2" x 2" = FSTUD x 11/16"
= 200 psi x (2 in)2/2 x 4 1/2" + 2,700.0 = FSTUD x 11/16"
= 1,800.0 + 2,700.0 = 4,500.0 pound-inch = FSTUD x 11/16"
FSTUD = 6,545.45 pounds
ÓSTUD = FSTUD / A = 6,545.45 pounds/(∂´ x (5/8" )2/4) = 21,334.86 psi
The allowable stress for A572, GR 50 steel = 27,000 psi
The Factor of Safety = 27,000/21,334.86 = 1.27
Resistance of Anchor The stud anchor must also be check for resistance to shear. The
to Shear entire 2" wide top surface of the “A3.500” shape is loaded by the
truck tire. The studs are spaced at 41/2" centers, so the length of the
section examined will be 41/2".
Ó Forces in the vertical direction =
200 psi x 2 x 4 1/2" + 200 psi x 3 "/2 X 41/2" = FSTUD
1,800.00 + 1,350.00 = 3,150.00 psi = FSTUD
ÓSTUD = FSTUD / A = 3,150.00 pounds/(∂´ x (5/8" )2/4) = 10,267.4 psi
The allowable shear for A572 steel = .33 x 50,000 psi = 16,500 psi
The Factor of Safety = 16,500/10,267.40 = 1.61
In Conclusion… Finally the concrete must be checked to prove that it can resist the
pull-out force on the stud. To eliminate the application of tension to
the concrete, the anchor stud is extended into the reinforcing steel
cage. A continuous reinforcing steel bar is positioned at the head of
the stud (See attached drawing.). The steel bar is wire tied to the stud
anchor. After the concrete encapsulates the anchor stud and the
reinforcing steel, the tension in the stud is translated directly into the
reinforcing steel. The concrete itself does not resist the pull-out force
in the stud anchor.
