Lesson 10:

ACTIVITIES/ASSESSMENT

1. Research on three GMO’s developed in the Philippines. Discuss the need for
each.

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) clarify as organisms (e.g., plants,

animals, or microorganisms) in which the genetic material (DNA) has changed in
a way that does not occur naturally by mating or natural recombination. The
three GMOs developed in the Philippines are Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) corn, Bt
talong (eggplant), and Golden Rice. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) corn is generally
used in agriculture and can control insect pests, thus preventing potentially
significant yield fields/crops. Also, the Bt talong (eggplant) expressed the Bt
gene, enabling it to produce the same protein that makes it resistant to FSB. And
Golden rice is a biofortified, genetically engineered grain. Biofortification
increases the nutritional value of crops. It's a new type of rice that contains beta
carotene converted into vitamin A when metabolized by the human body.

2. Which one is better, the organic or the GMO? Defend.

I think organic food is more preferred than GMO foods because they are
free of chemical residues and safer to consume than GMO foods. While organic
farmers take great care to prevent the use of chemicals to maintain natural
composition, GMO farmers actively introduce chemicals into their foods to alter
their integrity. Also, we can avoid having some health or allergy reactions caused
by GMOs.
