INVITATION FOR 27TH GCU PARLIAMENTARY

STYLE DEBATING CHAMPIONSHIP 2023

Dear Sir/Madam,
The Debating Society of GC University cordially invites your institution to participate in
the 27th GCU Parliamentary Style Debating Championship 2023, which will be held
from the 21st to the 23rd of January 2023. The rules governing the tournament are
given in the Appendix ‘A’, while the details of registration, and the schedule of the
contest are attached as Appendices ‘B’ and ‘C’ respectively.
The competition will be conducted in accordance with the rules of Asians
Parliamentary Style Debate Format. Only educational institutions will be allowed to
participate in the event. Private/Cross teams and Unions are NOT allowed.

A separate Under-19 trophy for both the English and Urdu category will also be
awarded. Schools can opt to participate in either Under-19 or Open Category. The
tournament will consist of 4 preliminary rounds, followed by a break into the
Quarterfinals. Each institution may register more than one team. (A) Teams will be
given priority over (B) Teams and in case of team registrations exceeding the team
cap, (B) Teams will be given priority on a first come first serve basis, once all the (A)
Teams have been accommodated. The registration fee for the tournament is
Rs.1500/- per team. Accommodation facilities for outstation teams shall also be
provided.

Every educational institution is required to bring an authority letter on institutional


letterhead. Teams failing to produce the authority letter will not be allowed to
participate. You are humbly requested to send the confirmation of your participants

Appendix ‘A’
REGISTRATIONS

The tournament strictly follows an n=1 rule for adjudicators. It is mandatory for
each team to register one adjudicator. If an institution registers more than one
team, then each team (barring one) should have a separate adjudicator. The
tournament management reserves the right to change the status of a team to
a non-breaking one, if they fail to provide an adjudicator for any of the rounds.
Registration Deadline: 16th January, 2023.
Payment Deadline: 17th January, 2023.

Appendix ‘B’
RULES OF THE 27th GCU PARLIAMENTARY STYLE DEBATING
CHAMPIONSHIP 2023

1. The competition for both English and Urdu categories will follow the Asians
Parliamentary Debate format.

Basic Features of Asians Parliamentary Debate format.

a. Teams will be given a preparation time of 30 minutes after the


announcement of the motions.
b. Each speaker will be allowed to speak for 7 minutes and the reply speeches
will be of 4 minutes each.
c. Teams will be allowed to ask a Point of Information (POI) between the 2nd
and the 6th minute of another speaker’s speech.

2. Only educational institutions will be allowed to participate in the event.


Private teams, alumni and unions are not allowed.

3. A separate Under-19 trophy for both English and Urdu categories will also be
awarded.

4. Every educational institution is required to bring an authority letter on an


institutional letterhead. Teams failing to produce the authority letter will not be
allowed to participate.

5. Teams will either be judged by a sole judge or a panel of odd number of


judges.

6. Teams will be required to maintain decorum and act respectfully throughout


the tournament.

7. An Equity Committee will be established where teams can make informal or


formal complaints. After evaluating the complaint, the Equity Team will
reserve the right to take appropriate action which may range from a verbal
warning to an expulsion of the participant/team from the tournament.
