Sound Intensity

Sound intensity, also known as acoustic intensity, is defined as the power carried by sound waves

per unit area in a direction perpendicular to that area.

Resonance

Resonance is a phenomenon that occurs when the matching vibrations of another object increase

the amplitude of an object’s oscillations.

Interference

Wave interference is the phenomenon that occurs when two waves meet while traveling along

the same medium.

Node

A node is a point along a standing wave where the wave has minimum amplitude.

Antinodes

Antinodes are points on a stationary wave that oscillate with maximum amplitude.

Beats

Beats are the periodic and repeating fluctuations heard in the intensity of a sound when two

sound waves of very similar frequencies interfere with one another.

Timbre

Sound timbre is known as the characteristic waveform of sound that depends on the material

from which it produces.

Pitch

the pitch of a sound is essentially a description of the frequency of the sound. Different pitches

correspond to different frequencies. High pitch means high frequency, and low pitch means low

frequency.

Loudness

Loudness is the human perception of sound intensity. It is frequently measured in dB which is a

scale based on the human threshold of hearing (which is given a measurement of 0 dB on up).

Doppler Effect

Doppler effect, the apparent difference between the frequency at which sound or light waves

leave a source and that at which they reach an observer, caused by relative motion of the observer and

the wave source.
