Academic writing is clear, concise, focused, structured and backed up by evidence.

Its purpose
is to aid the reader's understanding. It has a formal tone and style, but it is not complex and
does not require the use of long sentences and complicated vocabulary.
Features of academic writing:
Using academic language. Establishing your position. Writing in your own 'voice' Using tentative
language.
Clear communication. Writing clear paragraphs. Writing clearly, concisely and precisely.
Signposting.
Paraphrasing, summarising and quoting.
Editing and proof-reading your work.
EXAMPLES:
Abstract, annotated bibliography, academic journal article, book report, conference paper,
dissertation, essay, explication, research paper, thesis,
Examples of academic writing include book reviews, critique papers, essays, movie analysis,
reports, research papers, it typically consists of a literature review, a methods section, results,
and discussion.
Literary writing is defined as creating new creative work while academic writing is a formal
style of writing.
