1 INTRODUCTION

1.1. Product Description

LT-S0260 Automatic Direct/Residual Shear Test Machine is motorized and floor mounted testing equipment which is designed to determine
consolidated drained shear strength of soil materials in direct shear. It is equipped with a vertical loading mechanism that utilizes dead weight
(constant normal stress) approach and lever arm has 9:1, 10:1 and 11:1 ratios. The hanger has a weight capacity of 50 kg.

The machine accepts 60x60 mm, 100x100 mm square and Ø60 mm, Ø100 mm, and Ø2.5 in. round shearbox assemblies. All shearbox-shearbox
bowl assemblies are able to inundate the specimen water as well as dry shearing operations.

LT-S0260 is designed in compliance with the BS 1377:7, ASTM D3080, AASHTO T236, CEN-ISO/TS 17892-10, and TS 1900-2 standards, and it is able
to perform peak stress determination tests with the use of failure detection algorithm, shearing tests depends on a certain target displacement
value, or multi-reversal (cyclic) tests. With use of PC software, Mohr circles and Mohr envelope graphs can be visualized and the calculation of
cohesion (C) and internal friction angle (φ) are possible as well as one dimensional consolidation parameters.

The shear machine is driven by high resolution servomotor and gear box assembly. 5 kN load cell is used for load measurement. 10 mm and 25
mm linear potentiometric transducers which have 0.001 mm of sensitivity are used for vertical and horizontal displacement measurements
respectively.

1.3. Safety Devices

LT-S0260 utilizes limit switches to restrain the device from over-extending its displacement limits for the protection of both the displacement
sensors and the mechanisms.

Moreover, user can define load and displacement limits in the algorithm of the controller by setting the related parameter values.

There is also an emergency stop push-button located in the front face of LT-S0260. In case of any type of emergency or any anomaly (electrical,
mechanical, etc.), use the button to cut the device out from the mains.

Note: Read the whole manual for safety warnings and safe usage tips before operating the device.
2 INSTALLATION

2.1 Environment
Make sure that the room in which the device is going to be placed have a proper mains supply which is in compliance with the machines
specifications, and enough number of plugs for the connection of the device, PC/laptop, etc.

Check the voltage (V), ampere (A), frequency (Hz), and the phase of the mains supply.

LT-S0260 Electrical Connection Properties

Voltage Ampere Frequency Phase Plug Type
220 V 2-4A 50 Hz 1 type F

Main electricity line must be free from instabilities and repetitive power cuts
for both the extended life of the device and the continuity of testing. Therefore
make sure that the mains supply is well grounded. If the power cuts are
frequent or the grounding is not well enough, the use of an uninterruptible
power supply (UPS) is recommended.

Make sure that the device is placed in a clean and dry surrounding. Direct contact of the device with the sunlight should be avoided. A conditioned
room for example, will comply the above conditions and will result in best operational performance and measurement results. The apparatus
should be well accessible from the front and the sides for connections, testing and maintenance.

In order to prevent inaccurate test results, the ground should be rigid enough to minimize vibrations or shocks. If there are any other testing
equipment or a source that creates vibrations on the floor, LT-S0260 should be placed maximum possible distance to that source. Surface of the
ground should be horizontal and smooth enough so that the horizontal and vertical alignment of the device are not shifted.

NOTE: If remote assistance will be required from the LİYA TEST Technical Service Department, the room should have an internet access.

LT-S0260 is composed of five main parts: Drive Unit, Shearbox and Shearbox bowl, Vertical Loading Mechanism, Horizontal Loading Mechanism
and Control Unit. These parts will be explained comprehensively in the sections 3.1.1, 3.1.2, 3.1.3, 3.1.4, and 3.1.5 of this manual.

All of the components of LT-S0260 is seated on a pedestal which is supported

by 3 legs. Each leg have four anchoring holes to be used for fixing the device to
the ground or a stabile platform like a wooden mat or pallet to protect the
device from tilting over accidentally. Use proper anchoring bolts that is suitable
for both holes of the device and for the ground..

When the front side of the device is faced, the shearing direction is towards the left and the reversing direction is towards the right with respect
to the user.

Note: 3.1. Parts of the Device section only gives detailed information about the parts, components, and fixtures of LT-S0260, not the order of the
assembly of those components. For the ordered testing steps, check 3.3.Testing section.

LT-S0260 is driven by a high resolution servo motor and a gearbox assembly which are located inside the drive unit. The gearbox assembly translates
the rotational movement of the servo motor into linear motion which is carried to the testing section by a load transmission bar. LT-S0260 performs
homing action by a switch placed on this bar. Regardless of the displacement readings, the device finds the exact home (initial) position. Moreover,
displacement limits are controlled by two limit switches to protect the device.

There is a connection panel at the rear side of the drive unit. Control panel contains vertical and horizontal displacement transducer sockets, load
cell socket, power inlet, and ON/OFF buttons. Insert the matching end of the power cable to the power inlet then plug in the device to the mains.
Then switch on the device.

NOTE: Connections of the sensors will be explained in the related sections of this manual.

Usual assembly of the shearbox is presented in Figure 3. First upper and lower halves of the shearbox are pinned together by using locking screws.
Place the base plate, lower perforated plate, lower porous plate in the same order. Then place the specimen into the shearbox, on top of the lower
porous plate from the cutting ring by pushing it with an extrusion dolly without a disturbing the specimen. Then place upper porous plate,
perforated plate, and finally loading cap. Lifting screws are used for separating the shearbox halves so the shearing plane is free from friction forces
between upper and lower half of the shearbox.

Note: Separation is only done in shearing stage, never separate the boxes in consolidation stage. Separation distance depends on some parameters
such as the particle size. Consult to the related standard for the separation distance tolerances.

Note: Different combinations of specimen preparation is possible depending on some cases such as disturbed/undisturbed specimen requirements,
shearing tests with/without consolidation phase, or wet/dry shearing tests. Consult to the specimen preparation section of the standard that is
being followed for testing.

Locking screws must be removed just before shearing operation, however,

sometimes users may forget to remove them. This is the reason why they are
made of plastic on purpose. Even if the removal of the screws is forgotten,
they will deform and damaged instead of the device.

Shearbox bowl is designed for carrying the shearbox and fixing the lower half of the shearbox to itself so that during shearing operation, the lower
half of the shearbox (also lower half of the specimen) moves towards the left (shearing direction) while the upper half of the shearbox is fixed
without moving by the other components of the horizontal loading mechanism. During test preparation, shearbox is placed into the shearbox bowl
as shown in Figure-4, and shearbox is squeezed between the spacer block and shearbox fixing screws

Another function of the shearbox bowl is to hold the water that surrounds the shearbox for inundation of the specimen both in consolidation and
the wet shearing phases. On the side of the shearbox bowl there is a water evacuation hole and it is used to evacuate the water after finalization
of the tests. Outer right side of the shearbox bowl, a fine adjustment screw for the horizontal displacement transducer is placed. The tip of the
transducer comes into contact with this screw and the sensitive adjustment of the initial positioning is done by using this screw.

In LT-S0260, normal stress is generated on the specimen by using slotted weights (dead weights). Slotted weights are placed to the hanger that
has a carrying capacity of 50kg. A lever mechanism is used to magnify the hanged weights, and the magnifying ratio can be selected among 9:1,
10:1, and 11:1 by shifting the hanger position between ratio holes. To prevent premature loadings or creating shocks on the specimen while
hanging the slotted weights, a screw jack support is utilized. While loading the hanger with slotted weights, the support should be screwed up to
a position so that the lever arm is levelled horizontally. After making necessary adjustments the support will be used to apply a smooth normal
force increase by screwing it down.

Generated and magnified normal force is transferred to the specimen by a vertical loading yoke. Contact screw and the fixing nut are integrated
to the yoke. Lower end of the contact screw is designed as a centering ball. The purpose of this part is to center the normal force on the specimen
for a homogeneous normal stress distribution, to create a snuggle contact between the yoke and the specimen just before loading, and fixing the
mechanism by using the fixing nut to obtain correct and fluctuation free vertical displacement readings.
An adjustable counter weight is positioned at the opposite side of the lever arm to balance the lever mechanism in the horizontal level so that the
unbalanced weight of the lever mechanism will not interfere to the loading and the net generated normal force on the specimen is only a result
of slotted weights. For initial adjustment, make sure that the load hanger is empty and the loading pin is screwed down. While keeping the yoke
in vertical position, use the counter weight to adjust the lever so that it is balanced in the horizontal level.

A metal pole rises from the backside of the device to support a bridge that carries the vertical displacement transducer. The bridge can pivot
around the pole in the horizontal plane, and can slide up and down in a vertical line to position the transducer to an exact spot, which is the top
part of the contact screw. Place the vertical displacement transducer to the slot and squeeze it by using the black screw. Insert the RS 232 plug
end of the transducer to the vertical displacement transducer socket at the connection panel.

Improperly hanged slotted weights may tilt and fall to the sides from the
hanger and may result in injuries if the fall is placed on a limb. Make sure that
the slotted weights are pushed to the end of their slots so that the hanger bar
and the end of the slots are in contact. Moreover align every slotted weight on
the hanger so that the slots of each consecutive weight makes 180˚ angle
between them. By doing so locking effect will be present around the hanger.

4. Linear Bearings 11. Load Cell Connection Nut
5. Clearance Nut-B 12. Anchoring Block
6. Horizontal Loading Yoke 13. Anchoring Nut
7. Transducer Slot 14. Anchoring Bar

Shearing force created by the drive unit is transferred to the horizontal loading mechanism via horizontal load transmission bar. At the tip of the
bar, Clearance Nut-A is placed. Function of the Nut-A is to fix shearbox bowl to the transmission bar and remove the clearance between them.
Two linear bearings are placed upon the machine bed to slide shearbox bowl with minimum friction. Vertical loading yoke interacts with the upper
half of the shearbox and fixes it while the lower half slides beneath. Clearance Nut-A connects the yoke with the shearbox and is used to remove
the clearance. These two clearance nuts becomes more important especially multi-reversal (cyclic) operations. The generated load during shearing
operation is transferred to the load cell by a bar that pierces through the center block. Horizontal displacement transducer is placed on to the
center block to obtain undisturbed and stabile displacement readings. Place the horizontal displacement transducer to the slot and squeeze it by
using the black screw, then insert the RS 232 plug end of the transducer to the vertical displacement transducer socket at the connection panel.
Load cell can be removed/attached by using load cell connection nuts. After fixing the load cell, insert the RS 232 plug end to the load cell socket
at the connection panel. The members of the final part fulfill the anchoring duty. The anchoring bar is fixed to the machine ground through
anchoring block. Anchoring nuts are fixed the bar to the block from both sides.

3.1.5. Control Unit
3.1.5.1. Main Tab
When the machine is turned on, the first tab that is going to be displayed on the screen is Main Tab.

1.1- main.jpg

In the main tab, on the left column, load, vertical displacement, horizontal displacement, and stress is shown separately in their individual boxes.
These are the live values that come from the sensors except for the stress value. Stress value is simply the division of the live horizontal load to
the area of the specimen that will be selected. Moreover in the same column, at the very bottom some summary information about the upcoming
test is listed (test number, status of the test, selected test speed, test type, and the specimen type).

1.2- plot settings.jpg

The focal part of the screen there is a graph box which shows the stress (ordinate, in kPa) vs horizontal displacement (abscissa, in mm). Just above
this box, the two sub-menus are embedded into two tabs. When the screen is turned on, the first sub-menu (stress-displacement) is shown as
default. In the second sub-tab (plot settings), there are two options “fixed axes” and “auto scale”. When fixed axes is opt, the stress and the
horizontal displacement axes can be set manually to a desired interval. If the auto-scale option (default) is selected, the whole parts of graph will
be fitted into the graph screen automatically. Also in this part at the bottom-right corner there is a button (reset plot) which erases the graph that
is belong to the previous test.

At the bottom part, there is a box that shows the state of the machine, and four buttons. First button is “home”. Since the LT-S0260 makes a
shearing operation towards the left, the initial position is supposed to be at the very right side. This initial position is called “home position” and
the “home” button sends the whole shearing box assembly to home position. Second button is the “jog” button and it moves the shearing piston
towards the left and by pressing “stop” button this movement can be ceased. The “jog” button shall be used if a position other than home position
is desired. The third button is “stop” button and it terminates every kind of movement such as test, home, and jog movements.

SOIL / UTS-2060 - 11
3.1.5.2. Parameters Tab
In this section there are three sub-tabs in which the test type, test parameters, and the specimen-shape properties are defined.

3.1.5.2.1. Test Type

2.1- parameters, test type.jpg

conditional overflow: This is the standard direct shear test option. In this option, the machine will start shearing the specimen,
naturally after the “peak stress” is observed the stress values will decrease. After some certain amount of decrease (this amount is governed by
the parameter “break percentage”) the test will stop. Note that in this option the termination of the test is only dependent to the “break
percentage” (and also the limit switches and the maximum load) and the test will be terminated whether or not the “residual state” is observed.
If the residual state is also going to be observed either the "break percentage” should be set up to a large value (like 40%, 50%), or the
“conditional horizontal displacement-GO” option should be selected.

conditional horizontal displacement “GO”: In this option, the termination of the test is dependent only to the displacement (and also
the limit switches and the maximum load). You can assign a range to the test as displacement (such as 3mm, 5mm, 10mm,…) and when the
assigned horizontal displacement is reached the test will stop. Notice that you may not observe the residual state or even the peak stress value,
if they are out of the assigned range. In order to observe a well-defined complete graph you may simply increase the range.

conditional horizontal displacement “GO-RETURN”: This is the option that allows to conduct cyclic tests which is defined in some
standards such as “BS-1377:Part7-multireversal tests”. In this part, a target as displacement, number of cycles, hold time, and return speed
should be defined. The “test speed” parameter will be used as the shearing speed during the test. After defining these parameters and also test
parameters and the specimen type, and initiation of the test, the typical test loop is:

advancing to the target displacement with the assigned “test speed”  reaching to target  returning back to the home position with
the assigned “return speed”  waiting for the excess pore water pressure to dissipate (“hold time”).
The machine will repeat this cycle as the number that is assigned to the “cycle” parameter.

SOIL / UTS-2060 - 12
3.1.5.2.2. Test Parameters

2.2- parameters, test par.jpg

Test speed: the shearing speed (in mm/min) that will be used during the test.
Home direction speed: the speed that is assigned to the home button. Whenever the user presses the home button the machine will utilize this
speed while travelling to the home position (towards right).

NOTE: home direction speed is different than the return speed that is used in cyclic shearing operations.

Jog speed: If for any reason, the user wants to align the shearing box assembly to a position different than “home position”, Jog button will be
used and the jog speed is the value assigned to the jog button. When this button is pressed, the machine will start to move towards left.

Max. Displacement: this is a safety parameter to stop the operation before the system reaches to the limits (limit switches). Maximum capacity of
the displacement transducer that is used is 25mm and LT-S0260 has a working range of 15mm and the limit switches are nearly 25mm away from
the home position.

Max. Load: this is another safety parameter related with the loading capacity of the machine. This parameter is set as 5000N ex-factory. It can’t
be set to a value greater than 5000N.

NOTE: When a test starts, the load (stress) values starts to climb as the displacement advances and thus an inclined stress-displacement graph is
formed. After the failure (peak stress) the stress values start to decrease and fall to the “critical point” and then to the “residual state”. This is the
general material behaviour encountered in the shearing operations in soils. When the sample is first prepared in the shearing box assembly, small
gaps or clearances or other imperfections due to the specimen may be present in the system and they may cause jumps and falls in the stress value
in micro scale.

Failure Threshold: Although this micro-scale fluctuations in the beginning has nothing to do with the actual (rise & fall) material behaviour, it may
trigger the failure detection algorithm and cause a premature end of the test. To prevent this, failure threshold parameter, under which the failure
is not detected, is set to a suitable value between 10N and 100N.

Zero Surpression: In the beginning of the test, until the closed loop control starts there may be small fluctuations

Failure Percentage: This parameter also works according to the material behaviour described above. After a decrease in the stress value by the
defined percent of the peak stress, machine detects the failure. It is suitable to set this parameter to a value between 5-50%. (Let’s say

break percentage: 10% and the peak stress is 400 kPa. The test will be terminated when the stress value falls to 360kPa. (400 x 10% = 40; 400 – 40
= 360)

Normal Load: Normal load is the vertical force value that is applied on to the specimen. Normal load value can be input in Newton in this box,
which located in the upper right corner of the screen.

Note: Slotted weights that are placed to the hanger are multiplied by 10 (or 9 or 11 depending on the selected ratio hole) while transferring this
load onto the specimen because of the moment arm ratio. 5kg. of slotted weight in the hanging arm means that 50kg. load on the specimen.
Conversion of this load to Newton is 409.5N (50kg x 9.81m/s2 = 490.5 N).

Record raw data button: Test results are saved in txt format as standard. This format holds the basic information such as test number, test start
time, test type, normal stress, peak shear stress, etc. If this button is activated (by touching, it will go on and off), the device will create an excel
file that holds the detailed information called “raw data”. Raw data is the displacement-stress (and load) values taken at every second from
initiation to the termination of the test.

3.1.5.2.3. Specimen

2.3-parameters, specimen.jpg

First line in this page is “specimen type” which has 2 options as round and square. The dimension is defined as diameter in round specimens and
as width in square specimens. The value of the dimension (diameter or width) can be input in mm. to the second line. The third line displays the
automatically calculated area in m2.

3.1.5.3. Consolidation

In consolidation tab, there are 4 sub menus as Page1, Page2, Page3, Page4 in which the time values of the required points of a consolidation test
can be typed in as hours, minutes and seconds. Each page has 8 points which makes 32 points in total. The vertical displacement value of each
time point will be recorded and displayed across the time. It is not compulsory to use 32 points in every test. User can determine and select the
final point of consolidation to end recording automatically. For example, if 24 points are selected, latest point should be 24. Then by entering 24
time values for each point, corresponding displacement values will be saved and the recording process will stop when the time value of 24th is
reached. After initiation of the consolidation test, consolidation number, elapsed time, current value of displacement and status of the test will be
displayed in the right side of the screen.
By using the start and stop buttons at lower left corner of the screen test can be initiated and finalized.

In order to observe previous consolidation tests or previous steps of the same test, type in the desired consolidation number and press show

Service Staff. Unauthorized changes may result in wrong test results or even
damaged sensors and mechanical parts of LT-S0260 and the device will be out
of warranty.

General logic behind the “gain” is to increase resolution of the data that flows in to the controller from sensors through their corresponding
channels as much as possible without reaching the saturation before the maximum value of the related sensor. In other words it is used to find an
optimum point between resolution and saturation.
Gain values of every each channel can be arranged by using this menu. First box is for gain control and it is used to arrange gain values of channels.
Second box (GAINS) in the middle shows the present gain values for each channel. The last box displays the live raw data of channels to check the
saturation.

For example, a gain value for the load can be typed in to the box just next to it and sent by pressing the “send” button. By checking the raw data
at the maximum operation value of the load cell (5000N in this case) it is decided if the saturation is occurred or not. If the raw data is still changing
(really small amounts of change, generally in the final digit) it means the saturation level is not achieved yet. Then next gain number is assigned
and sent. When the raw data freezes before reaching 5000N, that means that saturation point is reached before the maximum value of the load
cell and some portion of the load values will not be displayed. In this case chose just the previous gain value.

4 MAINTENANCE & CLEANING

Before carrying out any maintenance routine on the LT-S0260, verify that no
member of it is under tension or load. Make sure the anchoring nuts are
loose, the hanger is empty and it is disconnected from the electrical feed
outlet.

General maintenance routines to carry as necessary are described next.

Cleaning of Shearbox and the Bowl
Frequency: After each test
 Remove the water out of shearbox bowl, and disassemble it from the device and clean with fresh water.
 Disassemble and clean shearbox and its components with fresh water, make sure that there are no soil or any other material particles
left in the cavities, such as locking screw holes etc.
 Boil porous plates in water to remove any probable soil particles that penetrate into the pores during the test.

Cleaning of the Exterior Surfaces

Frequency: After each test - whenever necessary
 Disconnect the electrical feed outlet before beginning the external cleaning process.
 Clean the exterior surfaces using a clean piece of cloth dampened with clean water. Lightly rub the surfaces of the device and
accessories.
 Dry the treated surfaces. Avoid humidity from entering the compartment of the electrical and electronic components such as drive
unit, control unit, sensors, etc.

Verifying the Integrity of the Mechanical Parts

Frequency: Monthly
 Check the integrity of the mechanical parts such as lever arm, hanger, anchoring and centering blocks, nuts, and screws and make sure
that they are fracture and corrosion free.
 If any vestiges of corrosion are detected remove them by using an appropriate rust remover and lubricate them.
 In case of any detected parts that are fractured, damaged or abnormally changed in shape, contact with LİYA TEST Technical Service
Department or the representative.

Verifying the Integrity of Electrical Parts

Frequency: Daily
 Confirm the integrity of the power cable, and the cables of the sensors.
 If any rupture, tear, etc. is detected in the cables, immediately stop testing by using the emergency stop button then disconnect the
electrical feed outlet.

Trained technical personnel or electrician must carry out maintenance of the

electric system. For device related electrical issues consult LİYA TEST Technical
Service Department or representative.

NOTE: If the device will not be used for a period of time, disconnect the mains plug, remove the sensors and store them in their original boxes or
suitable cases in normal conditions.
