In this video we will learn Method – D: [video 13]

Procedure:

Two Nessler’s cylinders are taken and labelled one as test solution and another
as standard solution.

Test Solution:

1. Test Solution is prepared as directed in the monograph by taking an

aqueous solution of 12 ml into a Nessler cylinder.
2. To the above solution 2mL of acetate buffer is added and mixed.
3. 1.2mL of thioacetamide reagent is added and allowed to stand for 2
minutes.
4. The intensity of brown precipitate formed in the Nessler cylinder is
observed.

Standard Solution:

1. standard solution is prepared by taking 10 mL of standard lead solution.

2. To the above solution, 2mL of acetate buffer is added and mixed.
5. Thereafter 1.2mL of thioacetamide reagent is added and allowed to
stand for 2 minutes the intensity of brown precipitate formed in the
Nessler cylinder is observed.

Conclusion:

If opalescence produced in the sample solution is less intense than the

standard solution, the sample will pass the limit test of heavy metals-and if the
opalescence produced in sample is more intense than standard the limit test
fails.
