Questão 21:
HOW TO DO WELL IN EXAMS
Before an exam, revision is very important. The reason is that when you get nearer to
the exam, it's easier to remember important information. But don't do too much; sleep,
exercise, and relaxation are also important.
On the day of the exam, have a good breakfast, and pack two of everything you need:
two pens, two pencils, two rubbers, etc. Arrive at the exam room in good time, but not too
early, because seeing other people looking nervous can make you feel more nervous.
In the exam room, sit down, close your eyes, breathe deeply, and try to relax.
When you look at the test paper, spend a short time reading all the instructions and
questions. Decide how much time you want to spend answering each question.
Answer your best question first, because this will give you more confidence. Always
make a plan of the important points before you write your complete answer.
It's a good idea to finish ten minutes before the end of the exam, to give you time to go
back and check your answers.
Remember to write clearly.
Don't look at the people around you, or at the clock. If you need something to look at,
choose something in the room, such as the window.
When you finish the exam, don't wait around afterwards to talk about it. Go away and
have a rest, and then prepare for your next exam.

Questão 23:
Letter from India by Shashi Tharoor
RAJAH FOR A DAY
(1) “The palace?” The excitement in my mother's voice was palpable. “We're going to stay at the
palace?”
(2) “I suppose so,” I replied. In booking my annual holiday in India, I opted this year for a
change from the usual round of visits to friends and relatives. My mother, my sons and I would
instead play tourist in our native Kerala – and check into the tony resorts that have recently sprung
up around the state. How, I wondered, had the backwater I knew as a kid become India's No. 1
tourist destination, above the Taj Mahal?
(3) My parents were born in villages in Palakkad, Kerala's rice bowl. They moved away as
teenagers, which meant they kept having to go back to visit. So when my sisters and I were
growing up, whether in Bombay or abroad, we always knew where we'd spend our annual family
holidays – not in some exotic locale like London or the Caribbean but back “home” in rural Kerala.
There we'd grumble about the privations of village life, the lack of mod cons, the ubiquitous
mosquitoes. “This annual migration,” I told my father when I was 13, “is for the birds.”
(4) And yet as adults we fell into the same pattern. Expats ourselves, my sisters and I each
winter round up our British – and Americanreared children and head for Kerala, rather self
consciously “renewing our roots” and instilling in the new generation our same sense of obligation.
(5) But this time, as we visited our crumbling 200yearold ancestral home in a seemingly
timeless village, it was Kerala that had changed. Savvy tourism promoters have lately come to
appreciate the region's exceptional beauty – lush green fields, temperate winters, golden beaches.
And because Kerala is also the spiritual center of the ancient life science of ayurveda, with its
aromatic oil massages and yoga. New age travelers have come flocking.
(6) I worked out our itinerary: five topclass resorts in 15 days – a trip “home” doubling as a real
vacation. My mother couldn't believe it when I emailed her. “The palace!”
(7) “What's the big deal?” I asked. “Tourists in Rajasthan have been staying in converted palaces
for decades. It's the one thing palaces are good for in our democratic age – serving as hotels.”
(8) “You don't understand,” Mother replied. “This is the Kovilakom in Kollengode.”
(9) Then I caught on. Kollengode, a tiny town miles from anyplace, was where she was born.
“When I was a little girl, I used to walk along the outer walls of the palace every day on my way to
school,” she said. “It looked so immense, so forbidding. It was unimaginable that I could even step
into it, let alone stay there. The biggest thrill of my life was when your father and I were invited to
tea by the rajah nearly 50 years ago. But even then we sat on an open porch. Visitors were not
allowed inside. And now we're going to stay there?”
(10) “Four nights,” I said. “The ayurvedic spa package.”
(11) And so it happened. A few weeks ago I sat with my sons on yoga mats with coconut trees
swaying in the gentle breeze around us as an Australian swami in saffron robes took us through our
exercises. Mother woke up in a royal bedroom and had her breakfast on the very porch she'd
visited when young. And just down the road, our ancestral village slumbered on, as farmers with
yoked bullocks plowed the fields as their forebears had done for centuries.
(12) I smiled at my mother she returned from an hourlong ayurvedic massage meant to ease
her arthritis. “Welcome home,” I said.

Questão 24:
Trafficking in Human Beings
From Himalayan villages to Eastern European cities, people – especially women and girls –
are attracted by the prospect of a wellpaid job as a domestic servant, waitress or factory
worker. Traffickers recruit victims through fake advertisements, mailorder bride catalogues
and casual acquaintances.
Upon arrival at their destination, victims are placed in conditions controlled by traffickers
while they are exploited to earn illicit revenues. Many are physically confined, their travel or
identity documents are taken away and they or their families are threatened if they do not
cooperate. Women and girls forced to work as prostitutes are blackmailed by the threat that
traffickers will tell their families. Trafficked children are dependent on their traffickers for
food, shelter and other basic necessities. Traffickers also play on victims' fears that
authorities in a strange country will prosecute or deport them if they ask for help.
Trafficking in human beings is a global issue, but a lack of systematic research means that
reliable data on the trafficking of human beings that would allow comparative analyses and
the design of countermeasures is scarce. There is a need to strengthen the criminal justice
response to trafficking through legislative reform, awarenessraising and training, as well as
through national and international cooperation. The support and protection of victims who
give evidence is key to prosecuting the ringleaders behind the phenomenon.

Questão 36:
When the British Film Institute released a new print of the classic 1971 gangster movie Get
Carter, some critics wondered if it would give Newcastle a taste of the stardom that was
enjoyed by Sheffield after The Full Monty. Telling the story of Jack Carter, a brutal hitman
who travels to Newcastle to avenge his brother’s death, it also reveals the city in a vivid, if
harsh light.
But today, despite the film’s merits, Newcastle no longer needs a movie to boost its
reputation. The fastest growing tourist destination in Britain, Newcastle has shed its old
image as a dusty northern town, built on coal mines and steel furnaces. Instead it has
become a place of clubs and winebars, restaurants and hotels. Everywhere there is a sense of
energy and prosperity.

Questão 40:
The Silmarillion, now published four years after the death of its author, is an account of the
Elder Days, or the First Age of the World. In The Lord of the Rings, were narrated the great
events at the end of the Third Age; but the tales of The Silmarillion are legends deriving from
a much deeper past, when Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, dwelt in Middleearth, and the High
Elves made war upon him for the recovery of the Silmarils.
Not only, however, does The Silmarillion relate the events of a far earlier time than those
of The Lord of the Rings; it is also in all the essentials of its conception, far the earlier work.
(...) But it was never published (though some indication of its content could be gleaned from
The Lord of the Rings), and throughout my father’s (J. R. R. Tolkien) long life he never
abandoned it, nor ceased even in his last years to work on it. In all that time The Silmarillion,
considered simply as a large narrative structure, underwent relatively little radical change; it
became long ago a fixed tradition, and background to later writings.
