This document outlines the procedure for an investigatory chemistry project to analyze the ions present in different toothpaste samples to determine quality. The procedure involves performing preliminary tests like color, smell, and reaction to acids on 3 toothpaste samples. Further tests are done to identify the acidic and basic radicals present by observing the samples' reactions to reagents like hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide, and ammonium compounds. Based on the results, confirmatory tests will identify the specific ions present in each sample, allowing a conclusion about which sample contains the most essential toothpaste constituents and is highest quality.

INVESTIGATORY PROJECT TOPIC: Reactions on toothpaste.
AIM: To check the ions present in a toothpaste and determine the
quality.
REQUIREMENTS: 3 Samples of toothpastes, dil. HCl/dil.H2SO4 sol.,
conc.H2SO4, NaOH Sol., H2S(gas), NH4OH, NH4Cl, (NH4)2CO3, NH4HPO4/Na2HPO4, Test tubes, Beakers, Flasks, etc.
PROCEDURE: In quantitative analysis, the given compound is analyzed
for the radicals, that is, the cations and the anions. Take samples of 3 toothpastes. First preliminary tests are performed on them. After that the group analysis is carried out. After this, the confirmatory tests are carried out to confirm the presence of a particular ion. Preliminary Test:
1) Color 2) Smell 3) Dry heating 4) Flame test
Test for acidic radicle:
GR. NO. REAGENT OBSERVATION INFERENCE
Addition of dil. HCl/dil.H2SO4 to original I solution II Addition of conc.H2SO4 to solution III Addition of no reagent
Confirmatory test: To be performed based on the above observations.
Test for basic radicle:
GR.NO REAGENT OBSERVATION INFERENCE . 0 O.S.+ NaOH Sol.+ Heat I O.S.+dil. HCl II O.S.+dil.HCl+H2S(gas) III O.S.+NH4OH+NH4Cl IV O.S.+NH4OH+NH4Cl+H2S V O.S.+NH4OH+NH4Cl+(NH4)2CO3 VI O.S.+NH4OH+NH4Cl+NH4HPO4/Na2HPO4
Confirmatory test: To be performed based on the above observations.
IONS PRESENT:
RESULT: We observe that from the following 3 samples, the ______
sample has majority of the essential constituents (anions and cations) of a toothpaste. Hence sample no.____ is the best of all the toothpastes.
