12-AMORSOLO OCTOBER 19, 2022

In Buscalan, Kalinga, Whang-od Oggay is regarded as the last mambabatok

(Kalinga tattoo artist) from the Butbut tribe. Since she began her lengthy
career 80 years ago, she has inked several people, including head hunters
from an indigenous tribe.

The Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA), also known as the National

Living Treasures Award, is given to an individual or group of artists by the
Philippine government in recognition of their contributions to the
intangible cultural heritage of the nation.

Whang-od deserves to be honored to be a GAMABA artist because she is

the only Mambabatok who still practices traditional tattooing in Kalinga.
She began learning the traditional tattooing technique called as
pagbabatok as a young child and also is recognized with tattooing more
warriors and headhunters than any other individual of her tribe.
Whang-od turned 105 on february 17 and she is the only living
mambabatok and preserving the traditions of kalinga.Bringing awareness
to a form of traditional tattooing and training several practitioners.

By giving whang-od the GAMABA award, the rich culture of the Filipino
heritage is maintained while also recognizing the beauty and grace of
ancient art. Whang-od absolutely deserves the title of manlilikha ng bayan.
