Rethinking the role of financial regulators – LIBOR Scandal

Develop a critical analysis on the role of financial regulators in the context of your response to
assignment 01 – “Rethinking the role of financial regulators – Thoughts after the Global
Economic and Financial Crisis.” Your discussions should consider the LIBOR scandal and
examine controversies around financial regulation regarding claims and demands of more
regulation and views supporting a lax approach to the financial system.

“The LIBOR manipulation is a serious crime that should have been detected and punished
sooner. What is necessary is for regulators to enforce existing law. They already have all of
the tools that they need; they just need to use them” David C. John (2012).

David C. John is Senior Research Fellow in Retirement Security and Financial Institutions in
the Thomas A. Roe Institute for Economic Policy Studies at The Heritage Foundation.
