Fertilizer Use in Indian
Agriculture and
its Impact on Human
Health and
Environment
Indian Journal of Fertilisers 18 (3) : 218-
237, March, 202
A fertilizer is any material of natural or synthetic origin that is applied to soil or to plant
tissues to supply plant nutrients. Fertilizers may be distinct from liming materials or other
non-nutrient soil amendments. Many sources of fertilizer exist, both natural and industrially
produced.
Fertilizer is one of the vital inputs required for enhancing agricultural production and
the farmers’ income in India. India ranks second in the world and first among the
South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries in terms of
total fertilizer consumption.
Historically fertilization came from natural or organic sources: compost, animal
manure, human manure, harvested minerals, crop rotations and by products of human-nature
industries (i.e. fish processing waste, or bloodmeal from animal slaughter). However, starting
in the 19th century, after innovations in plant nutrition, an agricultural industry developed
around synthetically created fertilizers.
This transition was important in transforming the global food system, allowing for larger-
scale industrial agriculture with large crop yields.
Fertilizer accounts for 50% increase in the country’s food grain production.
Fertilizers can be classified as mineral or organic. Mineral fertilizers, also known as chemical
fertilizers since they are manufactured by the chemical fertilizer industry, are mainly nitrogen
(N), phosphate, and potash. Although natural deposits of fertilizers exist, almost all N
fertilizers are synthesized from nitrogen gas (N 2) through the Haber–Bosch process.
However, phosphate fertilizers are derived from the acid attack of natural rocks and potash
fertilizers are refined from deposits of soluble potassium salts (e.g., potash ores and brines).
Most organic fertilizers originate from animal manures – either from the feces and urine of
livestock animals or from the faeces of poultry, alone or mixed with bedding material (e.g.,
farmyard manure, chicken litter).
Other sources include plant residues, municipal effluents and biosolids, and organic by-
products. For thousands of years, organic manures along with leguminous N fixation
represented the principal sources of nutrients for farmers, contributing significantly to
agricultural productivity and maintaining soil quality.
Mechanism

Fertilizers enhance the growth of plants. This goal is met in two ways, the traditional one
being additives that provide nutrients. The second mode by which some fertilizers act is to
enhance the effectiveness of the soil by modifying its water retention and aeration. This
article, like many on fertilizers, emphasises the nutritional aspect. Fertilizers typically
provide, in varying proportions

 Three main macronutrients:

o Nitrogen (N): leaf growth
o Phosphorus (P): development of roots, flowers, seeds, fruit;
o Potassium (K): strong stem growth, movement of water in plants, promotion of
flowering and fruiting;
 Three secondary macronutrients:

calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and sulphur (S);

 Micronutrients:

copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), zinc (Zn), boron (B).
INDUSTRY SCENARIO

The success of the agricultural sector in India is mainly dependent on the fertilizer industry.
The benchmark that the food industry in India has set is primarily due to the many technically
competent fertilizer producing companies in the country.
India is the 3 rd largest producer and consumer of fertilizers in world. The fertilizer
industry contributes to 40-50% of agricultural productivity, and with India being a
primarily agrarian economy this industry holds prime importance in the economy.
Agriculture in India contributes to 16% of GDP and employs about 58% of Indian
population. K also contributes to 10% -of India’s export earnings and is a major
contributor to India’s economic development.
The industry is a highly capital and energy intensive industry and India has a total
installed capacity of 18 MTPA (million tonnes per annum) for N and P fertilizers
nutrients while their consumption is 28 MTPA. The nutrients are processed into
formation of the fertilizer products like Urea, DAP, SSP, MOP, etc.; which is
consumed at 57 MTPA against a production capacity of 42 MTPA.
India is short on its capacities and is highly dependent on import of input,
intermediaries, and final fertilizer products to meet its growing demands. It imports
almost 40-45% of its total requirement valued at USD 6.9 billion or INR 315
billion. Also, natural gas required as key Input for manufacture of urea, most
widely consumed fertilizer in India, is partly imported due to availability
constraints in country.
The Indian fertilizers market is estimated to record a CAGR of 11.9% during the forecast
period (2021-2026). The Indian fertilizer market reached a value of INR 887 Billion in 2020.
The rise fertilizer consumption has contributed majorly to the country's sustainable
production of food grains. In the present scenario, the niti.gov.in states that 56 large plants
produce nitrogenous, phosphatic and complex fertilisers and 72 medium and small fertilizer
production units under the Indian fertilizer industry, which have single super Phosphate
(SSP). The main products manufactured by the fertilizer industry in India are phosphate-
based fertilizers, nitrogenous fertilizers, and complex fertilizers. With its rapid growth, the
fertilizer industry in India is all set to make a long-lasting global impression.
GLOBAL SCENARIO OF FERT ILIZER INDUSTRY

Fertilizer Market Size surpassed USD 190 billion in 2020 and will grow at a CAGR of
2.6% from 2022 to 2030. Growing population followed by changing dietary habits in
developed as well as developing nations to contribute growth of fertilizer industry over the
coming years. The market size is projected to reach 545,346.5 Kilo Tons while recording a
CAGR of 2.4% in terms of volume.
Asia-Pacific Dominates the Market
Asia-Pacific is the largest fertilizers market and accounts for around 47.7% of the overall
market in 2021. Southeast Asia is the major fertilizer consumer in Asia-Pacific, with China
representing approximately half of the consumption. The demand for nitrogenous fertilizers
in Asia is recorded as strong. However, the market for potassium fertilizers is expected to
grow significantly in the coming years. Demand in Southeast Asia is expected to grow further
with the increasing use of neem coated urea, upscaling of Direct Benefit Transfer to farmers,
and rapid adoption of water-soluble fertilizers.
In the Asia-Pacific region, rice is a big nitrogen-consuming crop. In order to boost the
agriculture production in the country, the Thai government supported the farmers by
providing subsidies for on-farm inputs. For instance, in 2019, the government announced to
launch of new stimulus measures for Thai farmers in the form of cheap fertilizers. With the
increasing agriculture production and various government schemes, the demand for fertilizers
in Thailand is expected to grow during the study period.

 By keeping in mind regarding the pandemic situation both direct and indirect
influences are mentioned for future purposes.
 Fertilizer played a major role in the India’s Green revolution success and the food
grain production.
 Due to the increasing population in India the need and demand for food also increases
with the availability of low cultivable land for the farmers which makes the use of
fertilizers more in that situation in order to get more yield.
 The consumption of fertilizer in India is highly skewed where there are some places
still they didn’t use the fertilizers. So its expected a growth rate in future if we focus
that areas.
 Awareness provided by more Government and Non-Government organizations
regarding the benefits of fertilizers by promoting helps to increase the usage of
fertilizers.
 Subsidies given by the governments for the purchase of fertilizers makes the farmers
to buy more fertilizers in the future.
 Eliminating the imports of fertilizers due to Make in India scheme where the
production of fertilizers increases and it makes to use more of domestically produced
fertilizers. Due to this the growth rate of India will be increased.
 To achieve the sustainable agriculture production with low areable lands definitely the
requirement of fertilizer is needed.

24.455 million MT, 4.550 million MT, and 4.244 million MT, respectively.
 Currently, 25% of India's need for urea, 90% of its requirements for phosphates-either
as raw materials or as finished fertilisers (DAP/MAP/TSP), and 100% of its
requirements for potash—are imported.
 Capacity utilisation in the business is significantly influenced by external factors like
weather and monsoon conditions as well as policy changes addressing fertiliser
production, consumption, and agricultural output enhancement.
 Fertilizers are often transported by rail and road from fertiliser facilities and ports in
India. The railway network transports more than 80% of fertilisers, with the remaining
20% going by road.

INDIAN FERTILIZER MARKET: DRIVERS

Catalysed by a strong growth in the country’s population over the next five years, food
demand is also expected to exhibit a strong growth. Conversely, as a result of increasing
urbanisation levels, available arable land is expected to decrease. We expect fertilizers to play
a key role in increasing the average crop yields per hectare.

Despite strong historical growth, fertilizer consumption in India remains highly skewed.
There are currently several states in India which still have a very low penetration of
fertilizers. This leaves a lot of room for future growth.

We expect several government and non-government awareness campaigns to educate farmers

on the benefits of fertilizers. Promotion of fertilizers through television, radio and customized
rural workshops are also anticipated to increase the consumption of fertilizers in the coming
years.

Increasing rural incomes, coupled by easy availability of credit, are also likely to create a
positive impact on fertilizer usage in the country.

Contract farming, where inputs in terms of technology and training are expected to be
provided to the farmer from the food processor (contractor), is also expected to create a
positive impact on fertilizer usage.
