Safety Information
To the User of This Manual
The user of this manual is directed to read and carefully review the instructions, warnings and cautions contained herein prior to beginning installation or service activities.
While you may have previously installed or serviced equipment similar to that described in this manual, changes in design, manufacture or procedure may have occurred
which significantly affect the present installation or service.

Installation and Environment

Except for installations requiring certification by the manufacturer per federal standards, see that a radiation protection survey is made by a qualified expert in accordance
with NCRP 102, section 7, as revised or replaced in the future. Perform a survey after every change in equipment, workload, or operating conditions which might
significantly increase the probability of persons receiving more than the maximum permissible dose equivalent.

Diagnostic Imaging Systems - Mechanical-electrical Warning

All of the moveable assemblies and parts of this equipment should be operated with care and routinely inspected in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations
contained in the equipment manuals.
Only properly trained and qualified personnel should be permitted access to any internal parts. Live electrical terminals are deadly; be sure line disconnects are opened and
other appropriate precautions are taken before opening access doors, removing enclosure panels, or attaching accessories.
Do not under any circumstances, remove the flexible high tension cables from the x-ray tube housing or high tension generator and/or the access covers from the generator
until the main and auxiliary power supplies have been disconnected. Failure to comply with the above may result in serious or fatal bodily injuries to the operator or those
in the area.

Electrical-grounding Instructions
The equipment must be grounded to an earth ground by a separate conductor. The neutral side of the line is not to be considered the earth ground. On equipment
provided with a line cord, the equipment must be connected to properly grounded, three-pin receptacle. Do not use a three-to-two pin adapter.

Diagnostic Imaging Systems - Radiation Warning

X-ray and Gamma-rays are dangerous to both operator and others in the vicinity unless established safe exposure procedures are strictly observed.
The useful and scattered beams can produce serious or fatal bodily injuries to any persons in the surrounding area if used by an unskilled operator. Adequate precautions
must always be taken to avoid exposure to the useful beam, as well as to leakage radiation from within the source housing or to scattered radiation resulting from the
passage of radiation through matter.
Those authorized to operate, participate in or supervise the operation of the equipment must be thoroughly familiar and comply completely with the current established
safe exposure factors and procedures described in publications, such as: Subchapter J of Title 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations, "Diagnostic X-ray Systems and Their
Major Components", and the national council on radiation protection (NCRP) no. 102, "Medical X-ray And Gamma-ray Protection For Energies Up To 10 Mev-
equipment Design and Use", as revised or replaced in the future.
Those responsible for planning of x-ray and gamma-ray equipment installations must be thoroughly familiar and comply completely with NCRP no. 49, "Structural
Shielding Design and Evaluation For Medical Of X-rays and Gamma-rays of Energies Up to 10 Mev", as revised and replaced in the future. Failure to observe these
warnings may cause serious or fatal bodily injuries to the operator or those in the area.
Add additional safety information as needed
Only qualified and system trained Philips service staff is allowed to perform service (installation, maintenance, quality assurance) on the Mx8000 IDT Family systems.
Make sure that the latest version of the service instructions are available. Read the corresponding instructions carefully prior to working on the system. For your own
safety and for more detailed safety information, refer only to the current version of the documents.
Use only specified tools and auxiliary materials. After finishing any service activity, ensure that all covers of the Mx8000 IDT Family, including the mylar gasket, are closed

Precautionary Measures Regarding Electrical Voltage

Before you start the procedure outlined in this manual, make sure that you read and understand the warnings listed below.

WARNING PRIOR TO ANY SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE ACTIVITIES INSIDE COMPONENTS:

SWITCH OFF THE SYSTEM AT THE MAIN POWER SUPPLY, (USING THE ON-SITE ON-OFF
SWITCH) AND THE INTERNAL/EXTERNAL UNINTERRUPTIBLE POWER SUPPLY (UPS).
MAKE SURE THAT NO OTHER PERSON CAN SWITCH ON POWER OR SWITCH OFF THE
SECURITY MEASURES, WHEN INSTALLATION, MAINTENANCE OR SERVICE WORK ON THE
SYSTEM IS PERFORMED.

WARNING WHEN PERFORMING ANY PROCEDURE INSIDE THE PDC:

SWITCH OFF ALL EXTERNAL POWER, E.G. POWER FOR X-RAY WARNING LAMP.
PRIOR TO ANY INTERVENTION IN THE PDC, ALLOW AT LEAST FIVE MINUTES DISCHARGE
TIME AFTER THE LAST SCAN. HAZARDOUS VOLTAGE LEVELS (>500V) MAY BE PRESENT
EVEN IF THE SYSTEM IS SWITCHED OFF.

WARNING IN ADDITION TO THE WARNINGS LISTED ABOVE, MAKE SURE TO FOLLOW ALL SAFETY
GUIDELINES AS DESCRIBED IN CHAPTER 1 OF THE MX8000 IDT FAMILY SERVICE MANUAL.
FAILURE TO DO SO CAN RESULT IN SEVERE PERSONAL INJURY.

CAUTION Always use an ESD protection wrist strap when servicing any component in the system.

Philips Planning Services

The Mx8000 IDT Site Planning Guide was compiled to assist in the site analysis, space identification programming and facility
design for your new computed tomography (CT) system.
The Mx8000 IDT offers siting advantages unavailable in other CT systems. Each system includes five units: Gantry, Patient
Table, Power Distribution Unit (PDC), Water Cooling System (WCS) and an Operating Station. X-ray cabinets and dedicated
equipment climate control rooms are not required for this system.
Although the Mx8000 IDT is relatively easy to install, siting requires a thorough investigation of the physical conditions of a facility.
Therefore, it is critical to study architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical and geographical elements in detail.
After you decide on a permanent location for your system, ask your local sales representative to enlist the resources of Philips’
Site Planning team. Philips qualified site planners support the efficient, timely and successful installation of operating sites
around the world. The Site Planning Group integrates planning, design, engineering, construction experience and specialized
knowledge of Philips equipment. The ability to design, manufacture, deliver and support premier diagnostic imaging equipment
makes Philips one of the global leaders in the installation of CT systems.
For additional site planning assistance and information, please contact Philips’ Installation Department or service centers.

On-site Preparations
It is extremely important that all on-site preparations are completed upon the delivery of the complete system. This has to be
reported with the Site Planning Check List (see Section Site Planning Check List).
Ensure that:
• There is sufficient floorspace for installing the gantry and the patient table.
• There is a suitable telephone and data network connection for SiteManager DICOM transfer image and service support

2-13
Mx8000 IDT Family Room Planning
Site Planning Guide Typical Room

2.3 Typical Room

The room must be at least 2.475cm (8’1") high for the Gantry (see Figure 2-17). The heat exchanger may not be more than four
meters (13' 1") above or below the Gantry.
The minimum room volume for the Water-air heat exchanger is 14.5m3 (512 ft3).

NOTE:

Minimum room volume is a safety factor that considers the possibility of coolant evaporation
into the room because of a possible defect in the water-air heat exchanger.

The lower edge of the lead glass window that opens into the clinic must be approximately 80 cm (1’ 1/2") from the finished floor.
The emergency SHUTDOWN button must comply with local and national fire codes.

2.3.1 Layout
Plan the room so that operators will have the patient in full view, from all angles. If necessary, install monitoring cameras.
Leave enough space between the wall and each individual unit for servicing the units and to comply with system cooling and
safety requirements.
A separate office and/or viewing room is recommended for the MxView workstation. We also recommend a separate patient
preparation area next to the scan room, for sites that will have heavy traffic.
Because of the high noise level of the fans, we recommend installing the water-air heat exchanger in a separate control
room. The heat exchanger may be to the left or the right of the PDC, or in a different room. Air hose connections for the water
or air heat exchanger must always be connected to an exterior wall.
Table 2-3 lists the components in a typical room and Figure 2-9 and Figure 2-10 show typical layouts.

2.3.2 Maintaining Eye Contact with the Patient and Scan Field
When planning a room, ensure that eye contact with the patient and scan field is maintained. This can be realized also with video
cameras. The observation monitor should be placed close to the operator’s console.

2.3.3 Minimum Distances to Non-System Components (EMC)

To avoid mutual interference between the CT system and, e.g., MR systems, ECG, and EEG workstations, minimum distances
must be maintained (see Section 4.3, Electromagnetic Compatibility ).

2.3.4 Minimum Distance to the Patient

The following distances from the patient to the heat exchanger and to the PDC must be maintained.

Figure 2-11: Minimum Distance to the Patient

2.3.5 Service and Safety Distances

All indicated distances from walls (e.g., for service and system cooling) must be maintained (see section 2.4 "Dimensions of
Units" ).

Distances from walls to motorized moving parts must be maintained in compliance with national regulations (e.g., "Deutsches
Maschinenschutzgesetz" - 500 mm).

NOTE:

The maximum travel of the tabletop with installed headrest/armrest must be observed (see
section 2.4 "Dimensions of Units" on page 2-23).

2.3.6 Maximum Distances between Cable Inlets

By default, 16 m (52.49 ft) cables and chilled water hoses are delivered with the system. In this case, the maximum distance
between inlets is shown in Figure 2-12.
An option for longer system cables is also available. In this case, 25 m (82 ft) cables are included and the maximum distance

2.4.3 Heat Exchangers

2.4.3.1 Layout for the cooling systems 2

• Due to the high noise level of the fans, we recommend installing the heat exchanger in a separate control room.
• The heat exchangers can be installed to the left or right of the PDC or independent of the PDC in another room.
• The air hose connections for the water/air heat exchanger must always be connected to an exterior wall or to an
air-conditioned room.

2.4.3.2 Heat Exchanger Height Difference to the Gantry 2

The maximum acceptable height difference between the heat exchanger and the Gantry may not exceed ±4 m.

2.4.3.3 Types of Heat Exchangers

There are two types of heat exchangers:

• Water-water (shown in Figure 2-19)
• Water-air (shown in Figure 2-20). Allow at least 1 m (3' 3") between cabinet and wall on side where air hose is connected;
allow 10 cm (4") on side with no connection.

2.5.1 Measuring the Floor Load Due to the Gantry

The floor loads shown in Table 2-5 were measured as follows:

NOTE:

Accuracy of measurement is imperative because of the high speeds of rotation of the scanner.

1. Load sensors were positioned at the four

measuring points under the Gantry shown in
Figure 2-23.
2. The load was measured at 0° tilt and 0.75 sec.
rotation after the Gantry was stopped by turning
the power OFF, i.e., emergency shutdown.
3. Table 2-5 shows the measured loads for each
load point.

NOTE:

At water inlet to the primary system, you must install the following (purchased locally):
• Water valve
• Flow meter
• Water temperature gauge

The chilled water supply of the hospital must meet the following conditions for the primary circuit of a water-water Heat
Exchanger:
• Water Temperature - 2 - 16 °C (35.60 - 60.80°F)
• Switch OFF - An automatic switch-off control system for the water circulation when the CT system is not in use is
integrated in the WCS.
• Water Quality - We recommend water of drinkable quality. With water of lesser quality, a filter must be installed with a
mesh of 0.2 mm in the primary inlet.
• Temperature Gradient - 0.5 K/min (−0.9 °F/min)
• Operating Pressure - Maximum pressure of 10 bar
• Circulating Volume - The minimum circulating volume depends on the temperature of the chilled water as illustrated in
Figure 2-25. If the flow rate from the on-site water supply is insufficient, a pump having the appropriate power should be
installed.
If the circulating volume from the on-site water supply is insufficient, install a pump to bring it to the required level.
• Power output to the on-site chilled water - 15.0 kW

NOTE:

When upgrading from Mx8000 to Mx8000 IDT, all CT system components must be
replaced. Existing mains connections, water connection, and premises can be used.

2-40
Mx8000 IDT Family Room Planning
Site Planning Guide Cooling System Requirements

2.6.1.4 Required Air Flow Rate 2

The required air flow rate is 4000 m3/h at a total power dissipation of 26.0 kW to the waste air and 40 °C air intake temperature.

NOTE:

Total power output = Gantry cooling power + power dissipation of the Heat Exchanger

Nominal values of the ventilator (integrated in the water/air cooling system):

• 50 Hz: 4000 m3/h
• 60 Hz: 4500 m3/h
with ∆p=100Pa (internal pressure drop!)

2.6.2 Secondary (Gantry) Cooling Circuit Requirements

The secondary cooling circuit includes secondary cooling circuits in the water-water or water-air cooling systems, water hoses
between the cooling system and the Gantry, the mixing unit in the left leg of the Gantry, and the heat exchangers in the Gantry.
To make installation easier, we recommend that the following be near the system:
• A water valve with a 3/4" screw connection.
• A unit for water drainage, such as a sink

The quality and pressure of the water in the secondary cooling circuit must meet the following requirements:
• The water in the heat exchanger must be tap water, i.e., drinking water quality. The volume of the water in the secondary
cooling circuit, excluding the hose connections, is approximately 50 liters (13.2 gallons).

Do not add anti-freeze.

Philips Medical Systems. Confidential and Proprietary information. Refer to Title Page.

2-41
Mx8000 IDT Family Room Planning
Site Planning Guide Cooling System Requirements

• The static fill pressure must be in the range 2 bar±0.2 bar.

The pump in the secondary cooling circuit generates an operating pressure of 5.0 ±1.0 bar at the pump outlet. This
pressure drops within the cooling unit to approximately 2 bar at the pump inlet.

CAUTION
DO NOT OPERATE THE PUMP IN THE SECONDARY COOLING CIRCUIT WITHOUT
WATER IN THE SYSTEM. IT WILL DAMAGE THE PUMP.

CAUTION
TURN OFF THE POWER SUPPLY TO THE WCS BEFORE FILLING WATER. DO NOT FILL
THE WATER TO THE SECONDARY COOLING CIRCUIT WHEN THE POWER IS ON.

Site Planning Guide Radiation Protection

2.7 Radiation Protection

2.7.1 General
Prior to beginning operation with a CT system, radiation protection zones must be set up and delineated, so that access and
occupational zones are restricted when the X-ray tube is in operation.
DIN 6812 contains the radiation protection guidelines for Germany pertaining to protection from injury resulting from radiation
exposure.

NOTE:

Adhere to the IEC 60601 and CFR 21 or the corresponding country-specific regulations.

2.7.2 Typical Stray Dose

At 120 kV, for a scan of 1000 mAs, the stray dose on a 10 mm (0.39") slice is 34 µSv, when measured 1.0 m (3.28') from the
beam center with the phantom installed. Measurement is with a cylindrical PMMA 20 cm x18 cm (7.87" x 7.09") phantom, with
the phantom centered in the slice plane.
The scattered or stray dose decreases linearly with respect to the slice width.

2.7.3 Minimum Lead Thickness

Walls must be coated with lead to block stray radiation at varying distances from the center of the phantom. Table 2-6 lists the
required minimum lead coating thicknesses required for different zones. These values are specified in DIN 6812 for CT systems
with an operating load of 300,000 mAs per week.

Philips Medical Systems. Confidential and Proprietary information. Refer to Title Page.

DIN 6812 defines the zones in Table 2-6 as follows:

• Zone 1 - Areas for occupationally exposed personnel of category A.
• Zone 2 - Areas outside designated controlled areas for occupationally exposed personnel of category B, such as: dressing
rooms, bathrooms, hallways or waiting rooms.
Zone 2 also includes areas outside the building used by the operator, if access to these areas is restricted, and areas not
used by the operator, like mobile X-ray units.
• Zone 3 - Areas in the vicinity of the control room used in connection with the operation of X-ray systems, and areas outside
the building which are used by the operator.
• Zone 4 - All other areas not connected with the operation of X-ray systems, for example, hospital rooms.
In addition, conform to any relevant local regulations.

Chapter 3
Preparation for Installation

Preparation for installation is divided into the following topics:

• Floor Requirements
• Installation materials
• Cable Routing and Piping

3.1 Floor Requirements

The Gantry and the Patient Table must be installed and secured on concrete flooring (concrete classified B25-B55), without an
installation frame. For floors with subfloor construction, refer to Section 3.1.1, "Recommendation for Subfloor Construction for
Installation Floor".
Remove any flooring (e.g., layer of plastic) in the area around the contact surfaces and replace it with shims. The shims must be
stronger than or as strong as the flooring that was removed.

NOTE:

The Gantry and the Patient Table must be installed on the same plane.
Have a structural engineer check the weight capacity of the floor.

The Gantry and Patient Table must be bolted to the floor. Other components must be bolted to the floor only in areas prone to
earthquakes or where required by local or national regulations. Otherwise, comply with local and national regulations with
respect to bolting system components to the floor.

Power Supply

The power supply must comply with local and national codes and regulations.
The power supply cable must be connected to a generator or power distributor that meets the specifications described in this
section (and shown in Figure 4-1), as well as complying with local and national requirements. See also “Power Distributor” on
page 4-2.

NOTE:

• The AWG4 power cable is shipped with the system.

• Do not connect non-Philips products to the CT power supply (mains line wiring).

The power supply must include the following:

• Emergency Shutdown Button - A minimum of one Emergency SHUTDOWN button must be installed in the examination
room. It should not be possible to switch the system ON again via the Emergency SHUTDOWN button.
• ON/OFF Switch - At least one switch that controls the flow of power should be installed near the control consoles, with
the ON or OFF status displayed on an LED. The switch should be a type that cannot be switched ON or OFF accidently,
such as a key lock.
• All buttons/switches should be approximately 180cm (70.87") above the floor.
• Ground Fault Detector (Fi- switches) - A ground fault detector for equipment protection is integrated in the PDC.
An additional ground-fault detector switch can be installed in the on-site power distributor. The installation of a
ground-fault detector switch is country-dependent.

NOTE:

Do not connect non-Philips products to the CT power supply (mains line wiring).

Philips Medical Systems. Confidential and Proprietary information. Refer to Title Page.

4-1
Mx8000 IDT Family Power Supply
Site Planning Guide Power Distributor

• Surge Protector - A surge protector that conforms with IEC 1024-1 and IEC 1024-2 should be installed to prevent
malfunction or damage to the system as a result of sudden high voltages that do not conform to IEC 601-1-2.
See also “Interference Immunity” on page 4-11.

NOTE:

Install the surge protector between the power distributor and the ground fault detector. The
PDC is already surge protected up to 2 kV.

• Protective Conductors - The power supply to the systems must include reliable protective conductor connections. To
ensure satisfactory system operation, the CT components must have a dedicated ground.

4.1 Power Distributor

A separate main supply line for exclusive use of the wall power distributor of the system is highly recommended in order to
guarantee trouble-free operation.
All system and added components receive power via this distributor.

NOTE:

Do not connect non-Philips equipment such as cameras from other manufacturers, film
processors, etc., to this power distributor.

The main supply line should run directly from the house transformer to the system power distributor.
Ensure that other users such as X-ray, MR, CT systems, elevator motors, air conditioners, lighting, are not connected to the same
supply line.
The block diagram in Figure 4-1 shows some of the requirements for the power distributor.

7.1.1 Safety Notes

WARNING
• INSTALLATION OF THE OVERHEAD COUNTERPOISE SYSTEM (OCS) MUST BE PERFORMED BY QUALIFIED
PERSONNEL. ANY ATTEMPT TO INSTALL OR REPAIR AN OCS UNIT BY UNAUTHORIZED OR UNQUALIFIED
PERSONNEL CAN RESULT IN AN UNSAFE MOUNT THAT, OVER TIME, CAN LOOSEN AND FALL AND CAUSE BODILY
INJURY AND PROPERTY DAMAGE.
• DO NOT USE THE OCS IN A MAGNETIC ENVIRONMENT. THE OSC UNITS ARE CONSTRUCTED OF FERROUS
MATERIAL. DO NOT INSTALL IN A MAGNETIC RESONANCE SUITE. IN THE PRESENCE OF A STRONG MAGNETIC
FIELD, THE OCS COULD BE FORCEFULLY DRAWN TO THE SOURCE OF MAGNETISM IN AN UNPREDICTABLE AND
DANGEROUS MANNER. BODILY HARM AND/OR PROPERTY DAMAGE MAY RESULT.
• FAILURE OF THE OCS TO REMAIN IN A DESIRED POSITION, OR LATERAL DRIFTING OF THE OCS TO THE SAME
POSITION COULD PRECEDE A SYSTEM FAILURE THAT CAN RESULT IN BODILY HARM AND/OR DAMAGE. IF THE OCS
DOES NOT RELIABLY REMAIN WHERE POSITIONED, INSPECT THE YOKE ASSEMBLY AND SUPPORT PINS FOR WEAR
OR DAMAGE.
• DO NOT HANG OR PLACE ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT ON THE HORIZONTAL SUPPORT ARM. THE HORIZONTAL
SUPPORT ARM OF THE OCS IS DESIGNED AND ADJUSTED TO SUPPORT A MONITOR ONLY. PLACING OTHER
EQUIPMENT ON THE HORIZONTAL SUPPORT ARM ADDS WEIGHT THAT THE ARM WAS NOT DESIGNED TO
SUPPORT. HANGING UNAUTHORIZED OR ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT CAN RESULT IN AN UNSAFE SYSTEM.
IF ANY OTHER DEVICE, SUCH AS A SURGICAL LAMP OR LEAD SHIELD IS TO BE INSTALLED, CONSULT THE
MANUFACTURER OF THIS EQUIPMENT FOR THE NECESSARY ELECTRICAL AND MECHANICAL REQUIREMENTS.

Philips Medical Systems. Confidential and Proprietary information. Refer to Title Page.

7-2

CAUTION
• CEILING ANCHORAGE STRESSES
BECAUSE OF THE STRESSES INVOLVED, THE EXISTING CEILING MUST BE CAPABLE OF BEARING SUCH STRESSES AS
DESCRIBED IN SECTIONSECTION 7.1.5, SEISMIC ANCHORAGE WITH CEILING PLATE ON page 7-7. THIS REPORT
SUGGESTS THAT CEILING-MOUNTED SYSTEMS MUST BE CAPABLE OF SUPPORTING 818 KG PER FASTENER.
• SUSPENDED CEILINGS
THE INSTALLATION PROCEDURES PRESUME THE MOUNTING OF THE OCS INTO CONCRETE. IN ANY OTHER TYPE OF
CONSTRUCTION, ADAPT THE MOUNT TO SUIT, AND ENSURE ADEQUATE SUPPORT. WITH SUSPENDED OR FALSE
CEILINGS, THE OCS SHOULD BE MOUNTED TO THE MAIN STRUCTURE OF THE BUILDING, AND NOT TO THE
FRAMEWORK OF THE SUSPENDED CEILING. THE INSTALLER MUST PROVIDE METAL FRAMEWORK, A BRACKET, OR
SOME OTHER ARRANGEMENT TO PROPERLY SUPPORT THE MOUNTING SYSTEM.

7.1.2 Site Preparation Prerequisites

The following are the structural requirements for the installation of the overhead monitor option:

Ceiling Height:

Maximum Height: 3.00 m

For ceilings whose height exceeds 3.00 m, the customer must prepare a metal frame to lower the anchoring height to a maximum
of 3.00 m.
Minimum Height: 2.65 m
The overhead monitor option cannot be installed at sites with ceilings less than 2.65 m. The customer must purchase the cart
option.

Site Planning Guide Power Supply (Teal) Option

7.4 Power Supply (Teal) Option

7.4.1 Overview
The Power Supply (Teal) option is supplied with the Isotran Plus.
The Isotran Plus consists of three basic components:
• A very well insulated, well shielded, low impedance isolation transformer. This provides protection against “common
mode” noise and spikes (neutral-ground potentials). The system can withstand and protect against impulses up to 6000
volts. It can also provide the inrush and peak currents required by disk drives and modern switch mode power supplies in
today’s computer systems.
• A low pass power filter with an exceptional ability to suppress “normal mode” noise (fast line-neutral voltage spikes and
dips).
• A surge suppressor, which shunts large impulses to ground. While the isolation transformer and low pass filter handle
virtually all disturbances, this surge suppressor’s function is to reduce unusually large voltage spikes to levels that are
harmless to electronic equipment.

The Isotran Plus removes noise and spikes from the AC power line. It is installed between the source of power (such as a wall
outlet) and the equipment that needs protection from power lines disturbances.
Clean power enhances the reliability and mean time between failure of computers and other sensitive electronic equipment.
Depending upon the type of system being protected, cleaner power can for example, enhance testing sensitivity, testing yields,
or image quality.

7.4.3 Grounding
Good grounding and ground bonding are critical to the reliable operation of electronic systems as well as personnel safety. The
following directions should be followed only in as far as they are consistent with all local and national electrical codes. Grounding
can often be confusing and difficult. Contact TEAL Electronics at 858-558-9000 if you wish more specific advice.
This Isotran Plus includes an isolation transformer that can significantly improve the quality of system grounding. By
re-referencing the phase conductors to ground, it eliminates incoming line-side "common mode" noise (and complies with Article
250-5 of the NEC). The output neutral (if present) is bonded to ground.
Input service ground requirements: If all communicating system components are powered from this single point ground with
isolated ground-type distribution, the system is then completely isolated from external ground quality issues. Non-isolated code
minimum input grounds can then be used. Verify input grounding meets codes prior to installation.
If the system has non-isolated communications lines from other devices not powered by the Isotran Plus, the system is then less
isolated and incoming ground quality becomes more important. The communications line becomes a "back door"
through which power and grounding problems can disrupt or damage the system. Good grounding of devices on both ends of
the line helps minimize potential problems, as would surge suppressors on the communications line or an Isotran Plus on the
device on the other end. Surge suppressors on the device, however, hurt much more than they help. Isolation of the
communications line (optical or magnetic) eliminates this problem altogether.
If a "good" input ground is required, it should be a continuous, insulated, isolated, oversized wire back to the service entrance.
This wire for the TEAL Isotran Plus refers to the ground wire in a 4-wire DELTA installation, installed with the 3 phase wires. The
Federal Information Processing Standards Publication 94 (9/21/83) also known as "FIPS Pub 94" is an excellent reference guide.

7-34
Mx8000 IDT Family Options Planning
Site Planning Guide Power Supply (Teal) Option

It defines a "good ground" as one with low impedance over a wide spectrum of high frequencies. It also says that optimum
equipment performance and personnel safety can be achieved by tying all communicating system components to a single point
ground (or, in the case of a large room, create a "ground reference plane" that acts as a single point).
Local Grounding Bond: Article 250-30 of the National Electric Code (NEC) requires that hard wired power conditioners (including
the Isotran Plus) be bonded to nearest available local building grounding electrode as well as the equipment ground. The required
local ground bond points are:
a. Building Steel, or
b. Grounded metal water pipe if building steel is not available, or
c. Other types of electrodes per NEC 250-50 and 250-52 if building steel or grounded metal water pipe is not available.
This also helps reduce electrical noise issues by referencing the system to local ground potential in case parts of the system
might be touching grounded parts.
Isolated output grounding: Except at the single local ground point at the Isotran Plus, it is important that the output ground from
the Isotran Plus be kept isolated from building ground in any output wiring. If receptacles are hard wired to the Isotran Plus in the
field, isolated ground receptacles must be used. These special receptacles avoid reconnecting the output ground to the conduit,
and because they look different they reduce the chance of non-critical loads being inadvertently plugged into the Isotran Plus
power.
