Let Us Learn!
This Module is divided into two lessons, namely: Derives the product rules
for radicals and derives the quotient rules for radicals.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. Derived the product, quotient, and power rule for radicals based on the
Laws of exponents (Rational).

2. Solve basic problems involving laws of radicals’ expression with rational

exponent to radical expression.

Let Us Try!
Directions: Rewrite the following expressions into:

A. Radical form

4. (25)2

5. (3𝑥)3

Let Us Study
Instructions: Apply your knowledge in translating expressions with rational
exponents of Column A into radicals of Column B. Read and analyze the written
explanations of Column C on the processes deriving product rule for radicals

Instructions: Perform the following task in a very concise manner.

1. Write a comparison between the processes use in both solving expressions

with rational exponent and radicals. Which of the two you prefer to use? Why
are the two processes equally important?
2. How do we arrive in the formula for radicals?

Lesson

6.2 DERIVES THE QUOTIENT RULE

Let Us Learn!
In this lesson, we will learn to;

a. Derive the quotient rule for radicals

b. Perform operation on radicals and simplify each simple expression.

Let Us Try! Check what you already know about the lesson:

Let Us Study:
This will help you understand new concepts and skills.

Steps in dividing radicals:

1. Ensure that the index of each radical is the same and that the denominator is
not zero.
2. Convert the expression to one radical.
3. Simplify where possible.
4. Rationalize the denominator, if necessary.

Rationalization is a process where you simplify the expression by making the

denominator free from radicals. It is necessary in the division of radicals.

When dividing radical expressions, use the quotient rule.

2
For all real values, a and b, where b ≠ 0

1. If n is even, and a ≥ 0, b > 0, then

2. If n is odd, and b ≠ 0, then

b. To divide radicals of different orders, it is necessary to express them as radicals of

the same order then rationalize the denominator.

Quotient Rule for Radicals

The power of a quotient rule is also valid for integral and rational exponents. This
rule allows us to write:

These equations can be written using radical notation as

The power of a quotient rule (for the power 1/n) can be stated using radical
notation. When written with radicals, it is called the quotient rule for radicals.
The quotient rule is used to simplify radicals by rewriting the root of a quotient
as the quotient of the roots.

Using the quotient rule to simplify radicals, simplify each expression.

3
Solution:

Radical expressions are written in simplest terms when

• Reduced the index to the lowest possible order.
• The radicand contains no factor (other than 1) which is the nth or greater power
of an integer or polynomial.
• The radicand contains no fractions.
• No radicals appear in the denominator
• Rationalizing the denominator

An expression with a radical in its denominator should be simplified into one

without a radical in its denominator. This process is called rationalizing the
denominator. This is accomplished by multiplying the expression by a fraction having
the value 1, in an appropriate form.

• Let Us Practice
You are now ready to answer the exercises given in this section. This comprises
activities to solidify your understanding and skills of the topic. You may check the
answers to the exercises using the answer Key at the end of the module.

Simplify each of the following.

1. 2. 3.

Let Us Practice More

Let us put your understanding to the test by answering the next exercises.
These exercises aim to intensify the application of the different concepts you
have learned. The solution for number 1 and number 2 is given:

1. Using the quotient rule for radicals,

4
2. Using the quotient rule for radicals,

Using the quotient law of radicals, simplify the given expression and find the missing
word:

Let Us Remember

The quotient rule states that a radical involving a quotient is equal to

the quotient of two radicals. This means that:

so, when you divide one radical expression by another you can simplify it by writing
both expressions under the same radical then simplify. The quotient rule works only
if each radical has the same index and the denominator is not zero.

Index – the superscript number to the left of the radical symbol which indicates the
degree of the radical.

Steps in dividing radical expressions:

1. Ensure that the index of the radical is the same and that the denominator is not
zero.
2. Convert the expression to one radical.
3. Simplify if possible.
4. Rationalize the denominator, if necessary.
