I Meaning
Sports reporting means writing about sports events, sports competition, sports
projects, sports problems, sports personalities and athletes in a form of news, feature
and/or opinion.
II Characteristics
Sports writing is livelier because the writer deals with the physical motion and
action. The writer must impart to the reader the drama and excitement he sees in the
field.
III Sports Reporting covers the following areas: Sports news, features, opinions and
columns.
A. Sports News
The Sports News is written similar to the general news. The only
difference is that in sports news, strong verbs and descriptive phrases are
used to heighten the drama and excitement.
B. Sports Feature
Sports feature brighten up the sport page. They have a wide range of
subject matter- personal sketches of players, human interest stories about
athletes background, achievements, dreams, stories about the origin or
history of a certain sports like sepak takraw, taekwando, Olympic games,
SEAG, sports trivia, puzzles, quiz, etc.
C. Sports Opinion
1. Personalities
2. Play-by-play accounts
3. Statistics
4. Quotes from player/coaches
5. The importance or significance of the event
6. Sports vocabulary
1. Sports deserves a definite page in your School Paper. It should have a uniform
format without sacrificing its innovativeness.
2. It includes Sports news, Editorial, Columns, Features, etc.
3. Emphasize campus news. Go out and look for your story. Do not rely on
secondary news by reading other newspaper.
4. Generate reader’s interest, come out with a contest, sports slogan, puzzle, and
trivia. Ask for comments and suggestions. Encourage contributions.
5. Include human interest story. The personal background of the athlete can add
color and depth to your story.
6. Keep a good sense of humor.
7. Exercise when you cover a game. A multitude of details will crowd you. Be
selective and pick out for your story only those that count or which would give
point to your story.
8. Be accurate not only in the score but in all the other highlights. If you are not
sure of an episode in the game, check personally with the players involved or to
their coaches.

SOFTBALL (English)
The Holy Angel University sluggers helf off the blistering final salvo of the
Angeles University Foundation bombers to squeeze out a 14-11 victory and nitch the
Palarong Panlungsod Softball diadem yesterday at the clear and sunny skies of the
Angeles Sports Complex.
At the initial inning, the HAU batters scored four runs while their battery almost
shut out AUF batters, allowing only a single run to gain the upper hand early in the
match. Raul Gomez of HAU sparked their first inning domination by blasting a homerun
at his first bat.
HAU continued their display of offensive might by getting five runs anchored by
James Walkin’s two run homer at the top of the second inning to exert more pressure to
their opponent. However, AUG was unfaced by HAU’s scary breakaway. They staged a
rally of their own, converting three runs in the same inning to tow the gap at 9-4.
At the penultimate inning, the two pitchers from both team Erick Gabriele and
Mark Laxamana struck the ball limiting the offense at two runs a piece, 11-6.
What appeared to be a match on the bag for HAU burned into an exciting wind-up
as AUF rattled air as it was not enough to overcome HAU superb start at the earlier
inning. The HAU students who supported their team all the way were in a jubilant mood
after four inning match ended.
HAU coach Alex Cruz praised his fielders for the outstanding defense.
“Our players were great. I can attribute it on their solid team work. You see, it
really works!”, said Coach Cruz.
