1.0 OBJECTIVE
1.1 To use Auto Router for PCB routing.
1.2 To use Auto Placer to place the components.

2.0 PART 1: Auto Router

PROCEDURE:

ECAD (BET 3063)

2.1 Draw a schematic circuit as shown in Figure 2.1. (Reminder!!! When you
draw or design a circuit, make sure to check the correct component
with a correct PCB footprint)

Figure 2.1

2.2 Make sure to save the design repeatedly. To transfer the schematic
circuit to PCB, press the icon at toolbar (see Figure 2.2).

2.3 After that, ARES Professional software automatically open and the
following window
will appear
(see Figure
LAB 5

2.3). Double
click Generic
Single Layer.

2.4 The component used in ISIS Professional will appear in component area
(see Figure 2.4).

2.5 Follow the step in Figure

2.5 to insert the
component in
workspace area.

2.6 Follow the step in Figure 2.6 to insert other component in workspace area.
You can freely arrange the component with your own creativity.

2.7 After done placing the component, click icon ‘Design Rule Manager’
(see Figure 2.7).

2.8 Set the following parameter (POWER) in ‘Design Rule Manager’ window
(see Figure 2.8).

2.9 Set other parameter (SIGNAL) in ‘Design Rule Manager’ window (see
Figure 2.9). After that, press OK.

2.10 Click ‘Auto-Router’ icon .Then, the other window appear ‘Shape
Based Auto Router’ (Figure 2.10). Click ‘Begin Routing’.

2.11 The computer start to route the PCB traces and PCB traces will appear
after it done (see Figure 2.11). The non-connected path can be seen
with green color.

Figure 2.11

2.12 To solve the non-connected path you can rearrange the component
place or you can draw a trace and hole (to replace it with jumper
wire – learn from lab 4). Then, you need to do the ‘Auto-Router’ again

3.0 PART 2: Auto Placer

PROCEDURE:
3.1 Open the schematic circuit that you have drawn in procedure 2.1 and save
it with different name.

3.2 Repeat procedure 2.2, 2.3 and 2.4.

3.3 Next, follow the step shown in Figure 3.1. First, click ‘2D Graphics Box
Mode’. After that, select ‘Board Edge’.

3.4 Draw a box on workspace (you can draw with any size – should be
indicated with yellow line). Purpose of draw this box is to set the limit
for PCB Auto Route / also can be indicated as the actual PCB board
size.

3.5 Then, go to Tools >> Auto Placer (see Figure 3.2).

ECAD (BET 3063)

3.6 Auto Placer window appear. PRESS OK. All parameter is set to ‘default’,
no need to change anything unless you doing the advanced routing
(see Figure 3.3).

3.8 If not successful, please adjust the box (Board Edge) size by
dragging the mouse cursor at the box edge. Also you can delete and
redraw the box again.

3.9 After that, you can repeat procedure 2.7 until 2.12 to use the Auto Router.
You can try other ‘Trace Style’ and ‘Neck Style’ in Design Rule
Manager window.

4.0 PART 3: EXERCISE

4.1 Draw a schematic circuit as shown in Figure 4.1 (see Appendix A).
(Reminder!!! When you draw or design a circuit, make sure to check
the correct component with a correct PCB footprint)

4.2 Transfer the schematic circuit to PCB layout and save it after finish.

5.0 DISCUSSION & CONCLUSION

Discuss what you have learn from the lab module and give a conclusion in the
lab report.
