TITLE: STAR DELTA MOTOR STARTER

OBJECTIVE

1. To construct the wiring diagram of star-delta motor starter.

2. To describe the operation of star-delta motor starter.

RESULT
DISCUSSION

1. Draw wiring diagram that has been done during laboratory session.
Attached as Figure 1.

2. Discuss the observation that have been observed when START button has been pressed
and released.
- Pushing Start Button
When we push the start Button Relay Coil will get second phase from Supply Phase-
Main contactor, Auxiliary Contact-Start Button-Stop button-To Relay Coil . Then,
Coil energizes and Magnetic field will produce by Magnet and Plunger of Contactor
move. Main Contactor closes and Motor gets supply when Auxiliary contact become
from NO to close.
- Release Start Button
Relay coil gets supply even we release Start button. When We release Start Push
Button Relay Coil will gets Supply phase from Main contactor, Auxiliary contactor
Stop Button-Relay coil. In Overload Condition of Motor will be stopped by
intermission of Control circuit at Point.

3. Discuss the observation that have been observed when STOP button has been pressed and
released.
- When we push Stop Button Control circuit of Starter will be break at stop button and
Supply of Relay coil is broken, Plunger moves and close contact of Main Contactor
becomes Open then Supply of Motor is disconnected.
4. Discuss the observation that have been observed when EMERGENCY button has been
pressed and released.
-When we push Stop Button Control circuit of Starter will be break at emergency button
and Supply of Relay coil is broken, Plunger moves and close contact of Main Contactor
becomes Open, Supply of Motor is disconnected. The Emergency Button is always at
normally-closed position. When pressed, it will cut-off the current flow in normally-open
form and when released, it will be back at original position that is normally-open. Thus, it
will energized the current flow, and the circuit and the motor start to operate.

5. Describe the detail operation of the star-delta motor starter circuit including the function
of each component in the circuit.
- Principle of Star-Delta Starter is the reduced voltage starting method. The Star-Delta
starter is manufactured from three contactors, a timer and a thermal overload. The
contactors are smaller than the single contactor used in a Direct on Line starter as
they are controlling winding currents only.
- Magnetic Contactor
A contactor is an electrically-controlled switch used for switching an electrical power
circuit. A contactor is typically controlled by a circuit, which has a much lower power
level than the switched circuit, such as a 24-volt coil electromagnet controlling a 230-volt
motor switch
- Circuit Breaker
A circuit breaker is an automatically operated electrical switch designed to protect an
electrical circuit from damage caused by excess current from an overload or short circuit.
Its basic function is to interrupt current flow after a fault is detected
- Thermal Overload
Thermal overload relays are economic electromechanical protection devices for the main
circuit. They offer reliable protection for motors in the event of overload or phase failure.
The thermal overload relay can make up a compact starting solution together with
contactors.
- Terminal cable
A terminal is the point at which a conductor from an electrical component, device or
network comes to an end and provides a point of connection to external circuits. A
terminal may simply be the end of a wire or it may be fitted with a connector or fastener.
- Bus bar neutral
The bar connects to the main service neutral and returns the current back to the electric
utility grid. In many service panels, the neutral bus bar also serves as the grounding bus
bar and is where the individual bare copper circuit ground wires are terminated.
- Over Load Relay (Overload protection)
Overload protection for an electric motor is necessary to prevent burnout and to ensure
maximum operating life. Under any condition of overload, a motor draws excessive
current that causes overheating. Since motor winding insulation deteriorates due to
overheating, there are established limits on motor operating temperatures to protect a
motor from overheating. Overload relays are employed on a motor control to limit the
amount of current drawn.
- Socket timer
A time switch (also called a timer switch, or simply timer) is a timer that operates an
electric switch controlled by the timing mechanism. The switch may be connected to an
electric circuit operating from mains power, including via a relay or contactor; or low
voltage, including battery-operated equipment in vehicles.

Apparently the lab is not success due to we have 2 different contactor of same type which is M2
Normally Open. The proper way to configure this by having an additional Relay which is M2(b)
where we did add but the problem still persist. When we checked the connection for the second
time, we misconfigure the wiring as we add the additional relay contactor. So in the future, we
need to make sure to configure for 1 contactor only one relay. If have more, we need to add more
and not jump connect. And last but not least, make sure to have a proper connected wiring
diagram and wiring configuration in order to aid during troubleshooting thus making wiring
diagram well protected for operator.
CONCLUSION

In a conclusion, we have achieved the objectives of the lab. Firstly, student will be able to
construct the wiring diagram star-delta motor starter. We construct the wiring diagram to make
the right connection at the workstation. Lastly but not least, student will be able to describe the
operation of the star-delta motor starter. When we push the start button the connector will
energizer the timer. The timer will count to energize the motor.
