I guess you have an idea now on our lesson for today.

Let’s proceed now to our lesson I hope you are already

D. Discussion.

Our topic for lesson for today is all about giving

Technical and Operation Definitions, lend me your ears
because this lesson is very important, especially in
crafting your Chapter 1.

Learning English 10 is not all about grammar and

World Literature, this is also the time for you to explore
research. One of the skills you need in crafting your
research paper is how to define a term or a variable.

But first we need to understand why there is a need for

the technical and operational definitions. These two are
under the so called Definition of terms which is a list of
important terms, acronym, or jargons in your research
paper.
It is your job as a student and as a researcher to guide
your readers on the important terms that you will use
on your research paper. Because these terms maybe
unfamiliar to them.

Your readers may stop reading your research once

they encounter unfamiliar words. You can avoid this, all
you need to do is to hone your skills in giving and
defining a term.

There are two types when it comes to defining a term.

It is consisted of Technical and Operational Definition.

The first one is the Technical Definition, it aims to, give

universal meaning, what do we mean when we heard
universal? This means? Relate or applies to anyone in
a particular group or society.

In technical definition, you should utilize different

reference materials like dictionaries, books, journals,
and even internet to give the technical definition of that
term.

Therefore, proper citation is expected to be done in

giving the technical definition. Do you follow class? Yes, Sir.

Here are the examples of making a technical definition

Examples:

1. According to Briones (2021)

2. (Duterte, 2020)
3. Ramos (2019) defined...

As you can see we used a proper citation in giving

technical definition.

Sir why do we need a citation or why there’s a need to

cite the author of your definition?

Technically you can just copy the definition right away

from internet or from the original proponent of your
definition but you should not just copy it without citing
them. Because what? It will result in plagiarism, what is
plagiarism class? It is the illegal copying or presenting
someone else’s work as your own without their
consent, remember class, it is illegal and it is
punishable by law.

So how you can avoid plagiarism? By giving proper

citation to the terms or definition that you have used. It
also shows that you are giving proper credit and you
acknowledge the original proponent of the term. That is
why there is a names of people cited in the technical
definition followed by a date.

Online Education. This refers to a form of education

that is delivered and administered using the internet
(Shinkten, 2016).

Synchronous Learning. This is one of the modes and

capabilities of distance education, which allows the real-
time execution of a wide range of activities in a virtual
space (Phelps & Vlachopoulus, 2020)

As you can see. This one is in Technical Definition

format. First you will write the term and then followed
by the definition which contains the citation.

Do you understand class? If you understand the lesson

please type, Go go go, if not, No No No.
Go go go.
The next time of definition of terms is called
Operational Definition.

On the other hand, this term is used after the technical

definition so in tagalog, “magkasunod sila”

So basically Operational definition explains how the

term is applied in the study.

In giving operational definition, the phrase, “As used in

this study” is commonly used to give signal that the
next statement is the operational definition of the term.
In this manner, the researcher is the one who
formulated the meaning of the term so it means you as
a researcher crafted the definition based on how you
used the term in your study that is why we have the
phrase “As used in this study”

Examples of Operational Definition

As you can see, first we write the term Online

Education, followed by the Technical Definition, there
is a proper citation, after that it is followed by the
operational definition which used the signal phrase “as
used in this study”

Same with the term Synchronous Learning, it is

followed by the technical term and then finally the
signal phrase “As used in this study”

Do you understand the two types on how to write the

definition of terms?

If yes, please type 1 if no please type 2

Do you have any questions? Silence means none

None

D. Application
Because you understand the lesson for today let’s
have a short recitation. Don’t worry this is an easy
activity. All you have to do is to answer TRUE if the
statement is true, and FALSE if the statement is false

1. Definition of terms is located inside the Chapter 2

Review of Related Literature. Is it true or false?

Yes?
Sir it is false
Correct, because it is in? Chapter 1

2. Proper citation is not needed in defining the

technical definition of terms. Is it true or false?

Yes?
False
3. Technical Definition is given only after you define
Operational Definition. Is it true or false?

Yes?
False Sir
Correct, why? Because the correct order is you define
Technical Definition first and then it is followed by
Operational Definition

4. Unfamiliar terms makes the reader understand the

definition. Is it true or false?

Yes?
Sir it is false

Why it is false? Because unfamiliar terms tend to make

your reader stop reading your research because of it.

Very Good.

5. Using proper citation in defining a term makes your

research paper less susceptible to plagiarism.
Is it true or false?

Yes?
True Sir,
Very Good, the answer is very self-explanatory

E. Generalization

you have any questions or violent reactions? None?
very good.

Again, Definition of Terms is located in the Chapter 1

and it list the important terms that you have used in
your study. And Technical Operation aims to give
meaning to the concept of a particular term, a proper
citation is required

On the other hand, Operational Definition is the

definition is provided by the researchers.
