Students will examine various types of plastics placed in different conditions to determine the method of separation for
recycling,
Experimental Approach:
Tests will be conducted on seven types of plastics put through a test consisting of room temperature water, boiling
water, and Sodium Chloride water to examine whether they sink or float. Through this process, students will identify the
differences between the plastics and which ones need to be recycled.

Thought Question:
If you worked for a recycling company and your boss asked you to separate many tons of #1 and #2 plastics, how might
you go about this task? Hint: You will first need to use the computer to research the difference between these two
household types of plastics.
Two fast tests that would highiight ther differences are how I'd go about differentiating these two different polymers.
One testis to simply observe the plastics and the color they emit. As is well known, plastic number one, also known as
PETE, emits a transparent/ clear color (similar to glass), but plastic number two, also known as HOPE, isn't clear but
may generate a semi-opaque tint (Ex. Mik Jug). PETE is frequently used to offer an appealing aesthetic (Ex. drinks)
since it exposes the substance i's holding, whereas HOPE is mostly utlized for ils strength and durabiliy. Applying heat
is another test that will help in separating the two plastics. The plastic will withstand heat longer ift has a higher
density. Since HDPE has a high density and can endure temperatures from 110 to 165F, you can clearly distinguish it
from PETE, as it begins to tur into a liquid at roughly ~40 to 130F.
