Make notes in your lab notebook concerning changes made to the original instructions, mistakes, and potentialireal
errors. These need not be in complete sentences, but should be neat and make sense to anyone who reads them.
No errors or changes were made during this experiment.
Data Analysis/Calculations:
‘To "show all calculations", do your work on regular paper then take a picture of it and insert it under the appropriate
sections below. See the General Chemistry Laboratory Handbookfor instructions on how to calculate theoretical and
percent yield in problems #1 and #3.
4.2). What is the actual (or experimental) yield of salicylic acid? _3.319,
b). Use the compound determined to be the limiting reactant in the pre-lab exercise to calculate the theoretical
yield in grams, (Use the actual mass from line “c" instead of the volume and density used in the pre-lab,) Show
calculations.
(4.76g methy| salicylate) (1mole methyl salicylate/ 152.15g methy! salicylate) = 0.031mole methyl salicylate
{0.031mole methy| salicylate) (1mole salicylic acid/ 1mole methyl! salicylate) (138.12g salicylic acid) = 4,282g salicylic
acid
c). What is the percent yield? Show calculations.
(3.319g/ 4.2829) x100%
75%
2, Write the overall reaction between methy! salicylate and water, as shown on page 1 of this document, showing all
atoms and bonds. (You may leave the benzene ring as a hexagon as it will not change. Ignore the NaOH.) Circle
the reactant bonds that are broken on the reactant side and the bonds that are formed on the products product side.
Salicylic acid can be created by hydrolyzing methyl salicylate, an ester. In this lab, we make use of the two distinct
functional groups on the aromatic ring. First, the hydrolysis of the methyl salicylate will result in the production of the
free carboxylic acid group. The alcohol that hydrolysis releases is methanol.

3a) Assume that the salicylic acid was the limiting reactant in the second synthesis in which aspirin was formed,
What was the actual yield?
b) Calculate the theoretical yield in grams. Show calculations.
(3.3199 salicylic acid) (mole salicylic acid/ 138g salicylic acid) = 0.024g salicylic acid
(0.024g salicylic acid) (1mole aspirin’ 1 mole salicylic acid) (180.16g aspirin) = 4.33g aspirin
c) Calculate the percent yield. Show calculations.
Discussion Questions:
LResiate the overall premise of this experiment, (What was the most important objective?)
The overall goal of this experiment is to calculate the mass of an ion in a natural compound in order to determine the
‘mass percent of an ion in an impure compound of a certain amount. The ion must be completely isolated before you
‘an determine the mass. Precipitation assists in the completion of this ion isolation. At the end of this experiment, we
‘were meant to determine the yield of aspirin.
2.2) Summarize the results of each part of the experiment. Explain which of your two syntheses resulted in the largest
percent yield and provide a brief explanation for this. (Recall what was used as your reactant in step two and how this
could have affected your yield.)

Salicylate acid has to be synthesized for this experiment. We achieved that by first determining the mass of the
container and the methyl salicylate, and then weighing the container after the methyl salicylate had been poured. The
results show that 4.769 of methyl salicylate is detected. Now we had to calculate the weights of the crystal and
container together, then weigh just the container to determine the mass. These numbers can be subtracted to get the
salicylic acid concentration, which came out to be 3.319. The initial syntheses yielded a high % yield.
_b) Compare the melting point of your recrystallized salicylic acid to that of the literature value. What can you say
about the purity of your product?
3.a) Summarize any discrepancies that occurred in the experiment, This would include changes to the procedure and
known errors or mistakes that occurred. If there were no discrepancies, then state this. Never state that there were “no
errors,” but rather that “no errors were observed” or something similar.
‘There were no errors which occurred during this experiment.
).During the vacuum filtration step after the synthesis of salicylic acid, a student got confused and used warm water to
wash the product (instead of the cold water the procedure calls for). What will happen to the overall yield that the
student calculates?
‘The yield would be lower ifthe student made the error of using warm water rather than cold. This is so because the hot
filtration would remove the undissolved product.
Conclusion: Provide the percent yield for each of your products and the meting point range for your first product.
Itis crucial that reactions are as cost efficient as possible, and one factor for determining effectiveness is figuring out
the percent yield of the reaction's product. The yield for synthesis #1 was 77.5% (the salicylic acid melting point range
was not reached in the lab).
