ACTIVITIES
 Brainstorm characteristics and characteristic phrases from previous lesson.
 Ask pupils to work with their talk partner(s) and come up with somebody famous that they admire. Why do they
PRE-LESSON admire this person? What have they achieved? What characteristics does that person possess that helped them
to achieve what they have?
 When ready, collect responses.

 Ask pupils to read through the rubric of the writing task and underline the key words/ phrases in it.

 Ask pupils to look at the picture accompanying the text and tell you who they think this man is (the man who the
text is about /a firefighter the writer admires).
 Ask pupils to read through the description and underline any unknown words at the same time.

 Ask pupils to read through the sentences 1-3. Explain to them that they should think of an appropriate example
to support the opinion about a person's personality expressed in each sentence.

 Ask pupils to read through the plan and give them any necessary explanations about the structure of a
description of a person.
 Explain to pupils what each paragraph of the main part should be about.
 Draw pupils' attention to the fact that they should provide examples to support their opinion about the person's
personality.
 Draw pupils’ attention to the TIPS and explain them. Allow pupils time to Come up with ideas. Help them if
necessary.
 Get pupils to write a rough draft using the given plan. For each paragraph pupils make brief notes of the
information they will include.
 Ask pupils to swap notes with their partner.
 Allow pupils some time to write their descriptions according to the given plan.
 Choose some pupils to read out their descriptions. (Student’s book p27

 Play Guess Who in small groups. One pupil thinks of a job and describes the characteristics you need for the job.

- work in groups to analyse the novel chapters assigned to them and look for the themes incorporated in the chapters.
- work individually to write an event/extract from the novel that incorporates the themes listed by teacher by referring to the text
within the time limit of 15 minutes.

(Set Induction) Pupils answer prompt questions from teacher to recall the characters and storyline of the novel which

1. Pupils are divided into groups. Each group is assigned with a few chapters of the novel.
2. In groups, pupils discuss the chapters assigned to them and look for the themes incorporated in the chapters
and then share their ideas with the class.

3. Pupils and teacher discuss all the ideas brainstormed as a class.
DEVELOPMENT
4. On the board, teacher writes down 3 themes that exist in the novel.
5. Pupils work individually to write an event/extract from the novel that incorporates each theme by referring to
the text within the time limit of 15 minutes.

POST-LESSON Pupils answer simple questions on the “exit card”. Questions are based on today’s topic.
