The tattoo industry played a significant part in rekindling interest in early, pre-colonial Filipino scripts.” This is where the idea for this book began: a guide on Baybayin for my fellow artists, especially tattooers, who are interested to learn it As a tatfoo artist, and in my hope to somehow contribute and take part in promoting Filipino arts and culture, | thought it was my responsibility to make sure that what I'm tattooing is accurate, for those who trust me and the work that | do. To me, it is also important to share this knowledge of one's own culture, to many others, so | made sure to learn how to correctly read and write Baybayin. What helped me leam was creating tattoo designs and writing the words for these subjects and other design ideas using Baybayin characters. You will see later in the book how this process works. | hope these will serve to inspire you. | also hope this serves as a reference to those who want to start leaming Baybayin; that this reaches tattoo shops, organizations, and interested individuals or groups, who have the resources to print and distribute this to others for free. A copy of the trial version can be downloaded as a digital fle at www.agyagi.com. ‘My gratitude goes out to those who have given ‘me their trust and support, and to those who paved the way for the next generation of tattoo artists. | also thank those who continue to foster Filipino culture, and to the experts and researchers. who continue to serve as inspiration. ‘a maray sa indo gabos! - Jeff Quintano www.agyagi.com opytight© 2021 by JEFF QUINTANO and AGYA TRIAL VERSION WITH EASY PRINT AT HOME LAYOUT. Marapat na gamitin natin ang tamang termino—Bavbavin, * Merrow, Paul 2002), Baybayin—The Ancient Seript of the Philippines, win\.paulmorrow.calbayengt htm CSM aoe Sa a Before the Spaniards arrived in 1521, Filipinos were already literate, having various systems of reading and writing. One of these systems is the Baybayin—the early script of the Tagalog people. The word Baybayin is from the root word baybay, which means “spell” or “syllabicate. These were typically inscribed in pieces of bamboo, copper, stone or leaves. The Spaniards found it challenging to influence and conquer the country—which they then referred to as “The Island of the Painted ‘Ones"—so they thought it is best to learn the rnative's writing system Baybayin to teach and propagate Christianity to Filipinos. First 10 be published was the Doctrina Christiana, en letra y lengua espafiola y tagala in 1593 which was written in Spanish, Tagalog, and Baybayin, This is one of the first books written in Baybayin that still exists to this day. In 1668, the use of Baybayin in publications was ceased leading to its slow departure from the Filipino consciousness. According to Paul Morrow, it can be said that the disappearance of Baybayin was a matter of practicality; @ casualty of the need to survive, to flow with the new standards of living in @ continuously evolving world. Although these books were an instrument used to subjugate the country and its people, it was able to document and preserve Baybayin, saving it from being lost or forgotten.* The term Alibata is incorrect. The right term is Baybayin. Paul Verzosa of the National Language Institute coined the term derived from the Arabic writing system called Alf Ba Ta. Alif ba ta is diferent from Baybayin. We should take care to use the correct term—Baybayin. www.agyagi.com 2 ‘opytight© 2021 by JEFF QUINTANO and AGYAGI TRIAL VERSION WITH EASY PRINT AT HOME LAYOUT.
