Concrete integral waterproofing admixture
Uses
As an integral waterproofer for structural and pre-cast
concrete.
Advantages
 Allows a reduction in mix water content to be made
without affecting workability, so reducing permeability.
 Provides integral protection, ensuring reduced
permeability throughout the concrete.
 Integral protection is maintained even if surface damage
occurs, unlike applied surface films or coatings.
 Lower water/cement ratio improves compressive
strength at same workability.
 Formulated for use in the Middle East.
Description
Conplast X421 chloride free integral waterproofing
admixture is based on a formulated blend of plasticisers. It
is supplied as a pink liquid which instantly disperses in
water.
The plasticisers in Conplast X421 improve the effectiveness
of water in the concrete mix, enabling desired levels of
workability to be obtained with lower water contents. This
produces a mix with a reduced water/cement ratio and
therefore reduced permeability.

assistance and advice on admixture selection, evaluation
trials and dispensing equipment. Technical data and
guidance can be provided for admixtures and other products
for use with fresh and hardened concrete.
Typical dosage
The optimum dosage of Conplast X421 to meet specific
requirements should always be determined by trials using
the materials and conditions that will be experienced in use.
This allows the optimisation of admixture dosage, mix
design and provides a complete assessment of the mix.
The normal recommended dosage is 6 litres per m3.
Use at other dosages
Dosages other than those given on this sheet may be used
to meet particular mix requirements provided that adequate
supervision is available. Compliance with requirements
must be assessed through trials mixes. Contact the Fosroc
Technical Service Department for advice in these cases.

Instructions for use
Compatibility
Conplast X421 is compatible with other Fosroc admixtures
used in the same concrete mix. All admixtures should be
added to the mix separately and must not be mixed together
prior to addition. The resultant properties of mixes
containing more than one admixture should be assessed by
the trial mix procedure recommended on this data sheet.
Conplast X421 is suitable for use with all types of Portland
cements and cement replacement materials such as PFA,
GGBFS and micro-silica.
Effects on stiffening and set.
Most water reducing admixtures produce some delay in the
stiffening of concrete, although the degree may vary.
Retardation is affected by factors other than the admixtures,
depending on the mix details and conditions involved. Trials
to assess the effects in a particular mix are strongly
recommended if this aspect is of particular importance.
Major factors which may lead to an increase in retardation
include the following.
a) Cement replacement materials will usually give greater
levels of retardation than concrete mixes and with
Ordinary Portland Cement at the same admixture
dosage.
b) Low temperatures will give higher levels of retardation
for the same admixture dosage. This is particularly
noticeable if cement replacement materials are used.
c) Changes in cement source or chemistry may lead to
variations in the retardation obtained. The amount of tri-
calcium aluminate in the cement has been identified as
being one of the main contributory factors in this
respect, with a lower level leading to greater retardation.
Increased retardation will be obtained at higher dosage. As
a guideline, dosages of 0.31 litres per 100 kg and above are
likely to be in the retarding category.
Dispensing
The correct quantity of Conplast X421 should be measured
by means of a recommended dispenser. The admixture
should then be added to the concrete with the mixing water
to obtain the best results. Contact the Fosroc Technical
Service Department for advice regarding suitable equipment
and its installation.

The use of Conplast X421 will not make poor quality
concrete waterproof. Good concrete practice must be
followed at all times. Well graded aggregates must be used
