Social Media Lowers

Our Self-Esteem
BY: SAKINA NAEEM AND MARIA ADNAN
Rise Of Social Media
It’s nearly impossible to find someone who
doesn’t use a social media platform these
days. Whether it’s Facebook, Twitter,
Instagram, or even LinkedIn, social media
continues to evolve and take up a growing
portion of our daily lives.

What was thought to be a fleeting trend has

become one of our primary forms of digital
communication, entertainment, and a place
to share information and ideas. The dramatic
rise in social media use prompts the question,
“How much is too much?” While there are
positive cases for social media, it can also
cause a series of harmful effects on its users.

to cyber bullying and peer pressure

The Negative Effects of Social Media on Self-Esteem

When you already feel as though your life is lacking, social media only serves to amplify
what other people have and what’s going well for them. After all, many people use their social
media profiles to project a perfect image with carefully chosen photos, often showcasing
different filters. As a result, you may begin to feel worse about yourself.

Social media can also add stress to your daily life, especially when it comes to evaluating
your own posts. Each time you post a picture or status update, you might worry about the
number of likes, shares, and comments your post will generate. This obsession to be seen
offers another opportunity for comparison, as you might wonder why another person’s images
or content got more attention and positive feedback than yours.
Signs of Low Self-Esteem
▪ Self-deprecation, even when joking

▪ Ignoring or discounting achievements

▪ Placing blame on yourself when things go wrong

▪ Failing to accept compliments

▪ Feelings of anxiety, depression, shame, anger, or sadness

▪ Crippling fear of failure For teens, in particular, additional signs include:

▪ Gradually declining school grades

▪ Mood swings

▪ Refusal to help with household chores or challenges

▪ Giving up on a task at the first sign of frustration

How Social Media Can Lead
To Anxiety And Depression

Using social media more often,

though, increases FOMO and feelings of
inadequacy, dissatisfaction, and
isolation. In turn, these feelings
negatively affect your mood and worsen
symptoms of depression, anxiety, and
stress.
