I. Objectives Content Standard: Students should be able to:

Demonstrate understanding of the key concepts of
combinatorics and probability
Performance Standard: Students should be able to use precise counting technique
and probability in formulating conclusions and making
decisions

Learning Competency M10SP-IIIb-1

Code: Solves problems involving permutations.

Objective: Solves problems involving permutations in a situation wherein

all objects are taken at a time

II. Content Statistics and Probability

III. Resources Mathematics 10 Learner’s Module

Mathematics 10 Teacher’s Guide

IV. Procedure Review:

What is permutation?
How do we denote permutation of n objects taken r at a time?
What is the basic formula in solving for a permutation?
Motivation:
Energizer by selected students.

Presentation and Discussion:

Example:
In how many ways can 5 people arrange themselves in
row for picture taking?
Solution:
n=5, r=5
P(5,5)= __ __ __ __ __(5 factors)
P(5,5)=5 (5-1) (5-2) (5-3) (5-4)
P(5,5)=5.4.3.2.1
P(5,5)=120 possible ways
Note: we used all the numbers from n=5 down to 1. Another way
of writing 5.4.3.2.1 is 5!(read as 5 factorial)
Similarly, 4! = 4.3.2.1
8! = 8.7.6.5.4.3.2.1
Also,
P(8,8)= 8!
P(8,8)=8.7.6.5.4.3.2.1
In our example problem,
P(5,5)=5!
P(8,8)=5.4.3.2.1
Remember:
The permutation of n objects taken r at a time is
n!
P(n,r)= ( n−r ) ! , if n≥r
And thwe permutation of n objects taken all at a time
P(n,r)=n!
Application:
In a certain general assembly, 3 major prizes are at stake. In how many ways can be the
first, second, and third prizes be drawn from a box containing 120 names?
Activity:
Work by pair. Solve the problem below:
A teacher wants to design 4 different tasks to her 4 students. In how many possible ways
can she do it?
Generalization:
What important points can you share on how to solve this kind of problem?
What is the us of factorial? Why is it important?
Evaluation:
Solve the following problem :
1. In how many ways can you arrange ABCDEF in a row?
2. Red, blue, yellow, green, violet, pink, and black are the colors of the six pairs of
shoes to be arranged inside the shoe rack. In how many ways can it be done?
