I. Objectives Content Standard: Students should be able to:
Demonstrate understanding of the key concepts of
combinatorics and probability
Performance Students should be able to use precise counting
Standard: technique and probability in formulating conclusions and
making decisions
Learning M10SP-IIIb-1
Competency Code: Solves problems involving permutations.

Objective: Solves problems involving permutations in a situation

wherein some objects are identical
II. Content Statistics and Probability

III. Resources Mathematics 10 Learner’s Module

Mathematics 10 Teacher’s Guide
IV. Procedure Review/ Motivation:
What is the formula in solving permutation taken all objects at a time? How about
if n≥r?
Group the class into 2. Each group should select on their representative member
to compete with another representative member.
The first one to solve on the board will gain points. The first group to gain a
maximum of 5 points will be the winner.
Go to the board and solve the following:
1. 5P3=
2. 7P5=
3. 8P4=
4. 6P6=
5. 9P3=
Presentation and Discussion:
Supposed some of the objects to be arranged are not distinct,
that is, some are identical.
Problem: find the number of permutations of the letter
of the word EVEN.
Solution: there are 4 letters in the word EVEN. If the object
are distinct then the permutation is P(4,4)=4!
But take a consideration that 2 E’s are alike. We
cannot distinguish between 2 E’s.
How can we arrange the 4 letters of the word?
Let us consider E in upper case and the other in lower case
Then we will have:
EVeN ENVe VNEe
eVEN eNVE VNeE
EVNe ENeV NEVe
eVNE eNEV NeVE
EeVN VEeN NEeV
eEVN VeEN NeEV
EeNV VENe NVEe
eENV VeNE NVeE
How many arrangements are there? Try to see the letters inside each box and
consider that 2E’s are the same, then how many arrangement are there?
There two ways of arranging 2E’s or 2!.
The duplications are eliminated by dividing 4! Or 24 by the number of ways of
arranging the 2E’s which is 2!
Out of 24, the number of distinct or distinguishable permutations P would be:

P (4,4)
P=
2!
4!
P=
2!
24
P=
2
P=12 distinguishable permutations
Application:
Find the distinguishable permutations of the digits of number 7,345,833.
Activity:
Work in pair:
Solve for the distinguishable permutation of the letter of the word SNEEZE.
Generalization:
How would you solve for distinguishable permutations?
How did it differ from solving nPr and nPn?
Evaluation:
Solve for the distinguishable permutation of the following:
1. 22356
2. CALLIBER
3. CENTER
