The book and CD contain everything needed to play drums in this grade. In the book you will ind the exam écores in drum notation. ‘The accompanying CD has full stereo mixes of each tune, backing tracks to play along with for practice, one with a ciel ard one without for each song, and spoken two bar count-ins to cach piece. Handy tips on playing the pieces and the marking schemes can be found in the Guru's Guide on page 22. Good luck! devel Requirements for Grades 1,2 &3 The wine RockSchool grades are divided into four levels. These levels correspond to the levels of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). Further details about the NQF can te found at wiwgaeorguuk/NQF. Details of all Rockschools accredited qualifications can be found at ww.gea.orguk/oper qua. Drunys Grade 3 is part of Level 1. This Level is for players wo are just starting out and who are looking to build a solid technical and stylistic foundation for their playing Grade 1: A player of Grade | standard should be able to play uy: to 32 bars of music composed of quarter and eighth notes and associated rests. There are simple notated fills usually played at the end of a four or eight bar section. Some hi hats are played open and crash and side cymbals are also played. ‘Grade 2: in this grade you are beginning to develop your groove playing wwhile building a solid technical foundation for the future. Grooves feature development and variation and you may be asked to show this in your playing. Notated fills feature at the end of four or eight bar sections. Jn this grade you well also begin to work on your stylistic appreciation, Grade 3 this grade continues the foundation work started in Grade 2, As a player you will be encountering syncopated eighth and sixteenth note grooves and a greater degree of hand-foot co-ordination around the kit. The pieces of music are now longer, covering two pages, giving you opportunities for inventive fills and part development. You should be developing, your stylistic awareness Drsans Reams at Grade 3. ‘There are threetypes ot exam that can be taken using this pack: a Grade Exam, a Performance Certificate and a Band Exam. Dewons Grade 3 Exam: this is for players who want to develop performance and technical skills Players wishing to enter for a Drums Grade 3 exam need to prepare three pieces of which one may be a free choice piece ‘chosen from outside the printed repertoire. In addition you must prepare the techincal exercises in the book, undertake either a sight reading test or an improvisation & interpretation test, take an ear test and answer general musicianship questions. Samples of these tests are printed in the book along with andio examples on the CD. Drums Grade 3 Performance Certificate: this is for players who want to focus on performing in a range of styles, “To enter for your Drums Grade 3 Performance Certificate you play pieces only. You can’ choose any five of the six tunes printed in this book, or you can choose to bring in up to two Liee choice pieces as long as they meet the standards set out by Rockschool. Level 1 Band Exam in Guitar, Bass and Drums: this is for players who want to play in a band ‘The Level 1 band exam is forall of you who would like to play the repertoire at Grade 3 as a three piece band, consisting of sguutes, bass and drums. You play together in the exam, using the paris printed in the Grade 3 Guitat, Bass and Drum books. Printed below is the type of sight reading test you are likely to encounter inthe exam. The piece will be composed in the style Of etthor rock or blues. You will then be allowed to fractise through one playing of the test on the CD before playing ita second time for the exam. At the segno sign the fist time around the eighth note cymbal pattern switches to the ride and the éynamie shifts to loud. There are some stabbed, fills (note the litle flar fill in bar 20), ‘The second half of the song allows you to develop the groove but watch out for the triplet kick dram pattern in bars 33-42 where the cytabal quarter notes alternate between ride, hi hat and crash. “A round kit fill 0 fins Composer: Hugsein’Boon, ‘CDP vic track 4 backing tracks 10 & 16 Pipeline ‘The opening groove here is quite intricate and builds in volwae fiom quiet to Toud. The main groove is mainly played in ‘ightir notes and should be developed as indeed can the variant groove that begins aftet bar 17. CD fall mix track 5, backing tracks 11 & 17: Little Shady "The opening eight bar groove features quarter ute hi hats and a kick drum pattern played partly on the offbeat. This off beat kick drum continues in the main groove. Watch for the open hi hats on the 6* eighth note of each bar. There are short fills around the kit and one bar is played on the off-beat in both Kick drum and open hi hats. There is a cont. sim. section in the second half allowing for development of the groove. Make sure you include the erescendos and the accents where indicated.
