Comparing Two Independent Groups/Comparing Two Dependent Groups

NAME: SCORE: _________

SECTION: DATE:

I. Direction: Complete the table below according to the assumptions needs to consider in the following
statistical test of difference.

STATISTICAL TEST ASSUMPTIONS

1. It must be measured on a continuous
scale – interval or ratio level
Dependent Variable 2. Approximately normally distributed
for each group of the independent
variable
A. Independent
Independent 3. It must consists of two categorical
Samples t-Test
Variable independent groups
4. There should be independence of
Observations observations where the participants
much be different in each group
Variances 5. The Variances must be homogenous
COMPARING 6. Must be measured at the ordinal or
TWO continuous level
INDEPENDENT Dependent Variable
7. The variable should not be normally
GROUPS distributed
Independent 8. It should consists of two categorical,
Variable independent groups
9. There should be independence of
B. Mann-
observations where the participants
Whitney U Test
must be different in each group and
Observations
there is no relationship between the
observations in each group or
between the groups
10. Variances must be heterogenous
Variances whereas the variables are not
normally distributed
COMPARING C. Paired 11. Must be measured on a continuous
TWO Samples t-Test scale – interval or ratio level
DEPENDENT Dependent Variable 12. Distribution of the differences must
GROUPS be approximately normally
distributed
Independent 13. Should consist of two categorical
Variable related groups whereas the same
subjects are present in both groups
14. There should be independence of
observations where the participants
must be different in each group and
Observations
there is no relationship between the
observations in each group or
between the groups
15. Variances of each group does not
Variances have to be equal but must be
attributed with each variable
16. It must be measured at the ordinal or
continuous level
Dependent Variable
17. The Distribution of the differences
must be symmetrical in shape
Independent 18. Must consist of two categorical
Variable related groups
D. Wilcoxon
19. There should be independence of
Signed Rank Test
observations where the participants
Observations
must be different in each group and
can be compared to the other
20. Doesn't assume normality, this
Variances makes them nonparametric test

II. Direction: Discuss the difference of comparing two independent groups and two dependent groups.
Cite at least one example.

The most popular way for comparing two independent groups is by comparing means. When the
samples from one population are distinct and not paired with the other, the groups are considered
independent. While subjects in one group do offer information about subjects in another group—
whether the groups contain the same set of subjects or distinct subjects that can be paired with one
another—this is true when comparing dependent groups.
