Simile and metaphor are not only part of figure of speech, they are also part of languages, of cultures.

Similes and metaphors are incorporated in both written and spoken form of English and Vietnamese to
produce special effects. Moreover, these figures of speech are widely used in an attempt to describe
things in literature and in everyday speech and bring the vividness as well as aesthetics to sentences. In
this report, we have highlighted the distinction between simile and metaphor, the biggest difference is
that simile has function words like “as”, or “like”. Moreover, we have also do the contrast analysis
between English and Vietnamese similes and metaphors to see various way of using these figures of
speech. The adequate understanding of simile and metaphor in English and Vietnamese is initial for us
to get access to the knowledge of semantics field.
