I.OBJECTIVES:
A. Learning Competencies: Shielded Metal Arc Welding NC II
B. Learning Outcomes: Weld Carbon Steel Plates in Horizontal Position
C. Learning Objectives:
a. Discuss the two kinds of welds defects
b. Identify what are the 7 Structural welds defects
c. Differentiate the two kinds of Welds Defects

Title: Different Weld Defects

Background for the learners:
A weld should have a good appearance. When the molten weld metal is not controlled properly, it may
spatters. In general, however, a defect weld is one that will not be strong enough to do the job and
may fail after it is put into use. Weld defects usually happen when the correct preparation and or not
welding technique are not used.
Weld defects may generally be classified into two main group
1. Dimensional defects- a difference between the joint preparation weld size, or weld shape and
the specification on the blueprint, sometimes cause by warpage.
2. Structural defects – a crack or other defect in the surface or interior of a weld.

Dimensional Weld defects

If the joint preparation, weld size, and /or shape differ from the blueprint.
1. Weldment is warped
2. Pre-bending and preheating
3. Pre-setting or pre bending

Plate Distortion

Types of structural Weld defects

1. Undercutting- a defect which results when a groove melts into the base metal next to the toe
or root of the weld and is not filled by weld metal.
2. Porosity - is caused by small gas pockets or holes in the welded metal.

3. Crater Cracks –are usually fairly small, they can be serious defects, because
they may raise stress in a weld already under stress.

4. Incomplete Fusion – when the filler and base metal are not completely mixed.

5. Longitudinal Cracks – are often caused by using the wrong filler alloy, improper
joint design, poor edge preparation, or poor clamping of the weld joint.

6. Slag Inclusion – When nonmetallic materials such as cellulose or limestone are

trapped between the weld and the base metal.

7. Incomplete Penetration – when the joint or root weld penetration does not meet
the weld requirement for full strength
Learning Competency: LO 1. Perform Root pass welding
