ELEG 310 Electric Machines and Power Fundamentals

Homework 2

Deadline: 2nd January 2023 (12.00 pm)

1. A 3-phase, 15 MVA, 20 kV, 60 Hz, two-pole, 0.85 PF lagging, star connected,

is connected to an infinite bus.
a. Determine the induced voltage at the rated condition. Draw the phasor
diagram for this condition.
b. Determine the torque angle at the rated conditions.
c. If the field current is kept constant, determine the maximum power the
generator can supply.
d. For the condition in part (c), determine the generator current and the power
factor. Draw the phasor diagram for this condition.

2. Ratings of a 50 Hz, Δ-connected synchronous motor with RS= 0.02 pu, XS= 1.16 p.u

Output: 6700 hp, 1000 rpm, pf = 1
Input: 3.8 kV, 800 A
Determine:
a) Number of poles of the motor
b) Ohmic values of RS and XS
c) Efficiency of the machine
d) Output torque of the machine
e) Rotational losses in the machine
f) Internal voltage

3. A 2300-V 1000-hp 0.8-PF leading 60-Hz two-pole Y-connected synchronous motor has
a synchronous reactance of 2.5 Ω and an armature resistance of 0.3 Ω. At 60 Hz, its
friction and windage losses are 30 kW, and its core losses are 20 kW. The field circuit
has a dc voltage of 200 V, and the maximum is 10 A. The open-circuit characteristic of
this motor is shown in Figure below. Answer the following questions about the motor,
assuming that it is being supplied by an infinite bus.
a) How much field current would be required to make this machine operate at
unity power factor when supplying full load?
b) What is the motor’s efficiency at full load and unity power factor?
c) If the field current were increased by 5 percent, what would the new value of
the armature current be? What would the new power factor be? How much
reactive power is being consumed or supplied by the motor?
d) What is the maximum torque this machine is theoretically capable of
supplying at unity power factor? At 0.8 PF leading?

resistance of 0.3 Ω and a synchronous reactance of 4.0 Ω. Its efficiency at full load is 96
percent.
a) What is the input power to the motor at rated conditions?
b) What are the line and phase currents of the motor at rated conditions?
c) What is the reactive power consumed by or supplied by the motor at rated
conditions?
d) What is the internal generated voltage EA of this motor at rated conditions?
e) What are the stator copper losses in the motor at rated conditions?
f) What is Pconv at rated conditions?
g) If EA is decreased by 10 percent, how much reactive power will be consumed
by or supplied by the motor?

5. A 208-V Y-connected synchronous motor is drawing 50 A at unity power factor from

a 208-V power system. The field current flowing under these conditions is 2.7 A. Its

c) Maximum power limit of the machine?
d) How much field current would be required to make the motor operate at 0.80
PF leading?
e) What is the new torque angle in part (d)?
