2 Nutrients

Answer the following questions to prepare for the 2.2 quiz.

For each nutrient listed below, list the primary function of the nutrient in the body,
and three foods that contain the nutrient.

These answers can be found in the Course Resource Section and the first link.

I have given you an example for water:

WATER:
FUNCTION: carries the nutrients to different parts of the body.

SOURCES: water—6-8 servings daily, liquids such as tea, juice, soda (water is
the best source)

1. PROTEIN:
FUNCTION: proteins build and repair the body

SOURCES: (Eggs and Soy)

2. VITAMINS
FUNCTION: Vitamins boost the immune system support normal growth and
development of the cells and organs.

SOURCES: Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Vitamin B12

3. MINERALS
FUNCTION: Minerals keeps your bones, muscles, heart, and brain working
properly

SOURCES: Sulfates, Phosphates, Oxides

4. CARBOHYDRATES
FUNCTION: The body primary source of energy and the brains preferred energy
source.

SOURCES: Bananas, Bread, beans.

5. What two ways can FAT be reduced in the diet?


1. Focus on micronutrients rich foods
2. Reduced fat dairy product

6. FAT can have almost two times the amount of calories as proteins or carbohydrates.
Usually FAT is figured at nine calories per gram.

7. What does FAT soluble mean?

FAT soluble are these vitamins dissolve in fat and are stored in tissue, so the body has
access to them as needed.

8. What nutrient helps build muscle?


Water, protein, calcium, magnesium, glutamine, Vitamin D, potassium, Vitamin b12
Iron

9. Cheese is high in calcium. It is also high in what other nutrient?


Protein, fat, Vitamin A, and Vitamin B12

10. Nuts, eggs, and dried beans contain what nutrient?


Dry beans, egg and nuts are important sources of protein, iron, zinc, and B Vitamins
